anyone interested in sharing a 2 inch thick marble slab with me?

Hi, I'm in the NY/NJ/CT area (live in NY). Am buying a 5cm thick slab (that's 2 inches thick) of a gorgeous white marble for my kitchen.

Here is the rub - I only need 25 sq ft, but must buy the whole slab, which they told me is between 50 and 60 sq ft (waiting on final dimensions.)

My fabricator could make someone a LOVELY thick chunky baking block to roll out dough or even make a marble top for a table or a vanity. You would only pay for the marble that you use and his fabrication costs (he came very highly referred - you can look him up yourself if you contact me.)

Is anyone interested? I don't know how to get photos in this post, but you can see a pic in my craigslist posting. I put the link in below - probably only good for 7 days.

And I'm in Canada (though I was just in NYC with a 16' cargo trailer to clear out my late mother's rent control apartment), otherwise I would, even with the house building quite a ways off. Don't tell my husband!

When a hotel puts in something like what you saw, the cost of the engineering design is spread over a bunch of rooms, the installers can be efficient because they are doing the same thing in room after room, and the sizing of the slabs is probably set so that there is minimal waste. They are also probably doing it as part of the initial construction where it's easier to do the install than having to work around the constraints a remodel might pose. Your cost will be higher because you are asking for a unique installation, even if it is simple. As hollysprings points out, the installers need room to maneuver to get the slabs into the room, which can become a problem in a smaller bathroom. For example, a 3' X 8' slab of 2cm granite would weigh about 350 pounds, would have to be carried in horizontally, negotiated around corners in the hallways, through the doorway of the bathroom, and then rotated upright and positioned. All without breaking the slab. If your ceilings are about the same height as the slab height, you can't simply rotate it to vertical because the diagonal of the slab is about 6" greater than the height of the slab. Given these issues, the typically higher material cost per square foot of slab granite over tile, and the labor cost of a granite slab install, I'd be surprised if you wouldn't be paying a lot more for this design than a standard tile shower. I think it's a cool idea, and it would be much easier to keep clean, but there are probably reasons that we don't see this done more often in a standard bathroom remodel. I'm not trying to discourage you...just trying to share some practical concerns. If you do decide to pursue this, I would be interested to hear what kinds of quotes you get. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I can't wait for summer squash to be in season again! This is a new recipe for me, but if there is a topping of Ritz crackers involved, I'm in!! (I will mix them with a little butter since it isn't decadent enough.) SQUASH CASSEROLE (Add A Pinch) 2 tablespoons butter 4 cups sliced yellow squash 1 medium onion, chopped 2 eggs 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1 cup milk 2 tablespoons butter (in addition to the two above) ÃÂ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) ÃÂ½ teaspoon salt ÃÂ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 sleeve Ritz crackers, crushed (I will toss with a little melted butter) Preheat oven to 350ÃÂº F. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in medium skillet or saute pan over medium-low heat. Add squash and onions and cook until tender. To a large bowl, add eggs and lightly whisk. Add cheese and milk and whisk into egg until well-combined. Add cooked squash and onions to egg mixture and stir well to combined. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter in skillet used to cook squash and onions. Add to squash casserole mixture. Add cayenne pepper, if using, along with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine. Spray a 9ÃÂ13 casserole dish with cooking spray and pour squash casserole mixture into the baking dish. Top evenly with crushed Ritz crackers. Place in preheated oven and bake 45 minutes, or until top has lightly browned and casserole does not Ã¢ÂÂjiggleÃ¢ÂÂ when the dish is moved.Allow to sit for about 3 minutes before serving. Serves 12.

Well, I finally did it.....I actually ordered the darn thing. It will arrive in about a month. Ended up going with a two inch top. My husband broke down and built a prototype so I could really get the look and feel of this thing. He made it to size and even painted it a dark brown. Started out with a 2-1/2" version and it just felt too tall for me functionally...it looked good, though. He whacked off some boards from the bottom and it was then 2". We both agreed that this height was better. Moral of the story, so wish we had done this prototype weeks ago. It made all the difference in helping me make my decision. I'm not good at visualizing. Our island is very small so it wasn't that big a deal to make the prototype. I encourage any of you out there to do the same if at all possible.

Thank you both for all the info! What I'm gathering is that man-made materials (I'm including quartz surfaces in that bunch) are fabricated at a standard thickness, and the edges are glued together to appear more substantial. On natural materials, however, your answer is what I was expecting/hoping for, mnhockeymom - it didn't seem right to glue two marble slabs together! I will work with the stone yards to find the right slab. If anyone has any other materials in interesting thicknesses, I'd love to hear about them / see pics to see how yours came to be. Thank you!!

breezygirl, I wish you were here! But shipping might get just a tad expensive.... did you look at the photo? It does not do justice to the slab. It is GORGEOUS.

Best of all, the slab was honed on one side, and polished on the other, so you can see which you prefer and it is all ready to go!

The only thing that is not to like is the price - if we had a big kitchen, and needed almost the whole thing, it would be easier to justify the cost, but it is $$$$ for us if we have to "eat" the whole thing, so that's when I came up with the idea of posting on Craigslist and on here.

Will let everyone know how it turns out!

Beckysharp, I replied to your posting but don't see my comments here. Just wanted to give you my condolences on your mother's passing. My siblings and I a few years ago lost our mom to cancer and going through her things was emotional and exhausting. Glad you are done with cleaning out her apartment and got back to Canada safely!

Thank you, Becky. I'm sorry to hear about your mother, too.

It's been a heck of an 18 months, my father died a year ago after a few months with brain cancer, and we were with my mother last fall helping her to clear out my father's things and get their retirement house ready for sale when *she* died. I think we're all still stunned, and it's been a rollercoaster, mostly downwards. My mental distraction has been planning the new kitchen -- that's how I found GW : ). The other distraction was our continental drive, but we saw lots and had some small adventures. Though if we never drive on the NJ Turnpike again, we'll be happy...

I love that the slab is honed on one side and polished on the other -- nifty! Yes please, keep us posted.

I'm so sorry Becky. I lost both my parents within 7 weeks of each other. That was almost 10 years ago. It's my adorable Daddy's birthday today, and I shed tears and miss him as if it were yesterday. Your stone is GLORIOUS!

Be very careful with craigslist. I've been listing the marble slab I ended up not using and a 5' perfect remnant from my soapstone install. I'm getting all kind of spammers responding. Dont' click on anything. Like if they say, "I'm looking at so many pieces, please click here to make sure it's yours". Don't respond if you receive a message that makes no sense to what you posted. For example, I had one that was almost gibberish. Several English words strung together that made no sense. What they want to do is get you to write back from your personal computer. Good luck!!

Becky what kind of marble is it? Is it Danby by any chance? Where was it quarried?

HI Remodelfla, Thank you for the compliment on the marble and I am so sorry to hear about your parents. Within 7 weeks of one another - that is very sad for you and your siblings and must have been incredibly difficult.

Beckysharp, oh dear - you and Remodelfla both have experienced the loss of both parents very quickly. It was bad for me to lose my mom to cancer and it would have sent me over the edge if my dad had died, too. So glad you found this website - it is a fantastic distraction and I just wish I had found it sooner - before we even bought and thought about remodeling. I love clipping useful posts to my saved folder and more than once have needed to refer to them to convince my architect and contractor that something CAN be done. Ugh, they definitely sometimes just want to do what they know, so when you start your project, try to hire someone willing to work with you and go past their comfort zone to get you what you want.

Sayde, no, it is not Danby. It's called "Misty" marble. I don't know where it was quarried but there is a sticker on it saying "Made in Italy"

I started the process wanting Imperial Danby. The slabs I saw back 6 months ago would have been perfect for my kitchen. All the "Imperial" Danby and other tpes of Danby I am seeing now have a lot more black dots and black streaks, which would be gorgeous with almost any kitchen but mine!

My slab is softer looking and more consistent color wise with my kitchen.
