How to keep / delay ice from forming in chest freezer?
Comments (15)Reduce what causes it in the first place. 1. Frost is quickly produced when the door is open and warm moist air rushes in. Where is the freezer located - in a damp basement, humid garage, next to the room humidifier you use in the winter, in a laundry room where the air gets moist from doing laundry or wet laundry hanging on drying racks??? 2. Frost is also produced by poorly-packaged foods. Tossing in a box of frozen food will result in any moisture locked between the box and the packaged food inside to transfer to the freezer. If the boxed food has also absorbed moisture from thawing and refreezing while it was in your grocery cart and the trip home, it will also be warm when the contents are placed in the freezer and the moisture will transfer to the freezer. I remove food from the grocery store packaging, vacuum seal it with a FoodSaver, and then place it in the freezer. Boxes are a waste of space. Moisture in food migrates from the food to the air. Air-tight storage, such as vacuum sealing, will help cut down on moisture migration from foods. Putting hot/warm foods in the freezer will also be a source for frost. That plastic container of hot/warm soup will quickly have moisture transfering from it to the freezer. 3. Is your freezer at 0°F or colder? 4. As others mentioned, check the gasket, wash it or replace it if necessary. -Grainlady...See Moreundercounter ice machine
Comments (97)I have the Monogram and can confirm the issue with the mold in the tubing too and it seems like black mold and flakes of green calcium like you see on copper. It reminded me of the clear 1/4” irrigation lines you can buy for aquariums and such. I had clear piping for some plants on the deck and they would clog with calcium build up. I switched to the black 1/4 inch tubing and the problem went away. I wonder if replacing the piping in the GE Monogram with black tubing would solve the issue. It seems like light contributes to the growth with my experience with clear tubing in irrigation. Does the little bit of light the ice maker gets cause the issue? I am not sure, but I may try black piping the next time I clean it. The half inch stuff they sell at Lowe’s should work and I may put some 90 degree elbows in with the connections to help out with the length of the piping. I know the ignorance is bliss will come in to play at least with the black piping. I wonder if bleach will work work any better than the phosphoric acid cleaner to clean the pipes? May give that a try before the phosphoric cleaning The GE Monogram is loud. The water valve is just plain old loud. Not sure why a water valve has to be loud! i was think of putting a carpet remnant underneath, and cutting a big piece of styrofoam to put beneath the door. Heat displacement versus sound will be the battle....See MoreMake potassium softened water taste better
Comments (3)Some people have more discriminating palettes than others. Softened water will taste different than hard water due to the sodium or potassium ions exchanged in the softening process. The higher the hardness the more sodium or potassium is exchanged into the hard water to soften it and the more the taste is effected. Many people install RO units under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water and many also plumb the RO to provide water to the fridge for ice cubes or the water in the door if you have that feature. Some people install a "taste" (carbon) filter under the sink and are happy with that. This type of filter will make the water taster better(?) or different. Looking back at your softener sizing thread and your water conditions... PH is a little high and iron and manganese. High PH will effect taste. Have you been using Iron Out or a similar product? IMO an RO is a better choice than a filter. Have you been checking to see that the water holds 0 hardness all the way to regeneration?...See Moregot a little taste of fire and ice..
Comments (43)Love it! I can't wait to start my F&I backsplash! (As soon as my DH gets over the sticker shock! We're getting local quotes of $22 to $25 per sq ft + shipping...and we need about 48 sq ft.) But, I will probably order from one of the online sources I was told about in another thread...that should help w/the sticker shock... My DH has come to appreciate GW over the last few years (3 years in July!) b/c I've found good prices & deals courtesy of other GWers as well as a lot of help during the bulk of the remodel....See Moreasolo
