Make sure you read to the very end. Very interesting,

to know the best way to tell where things are made.

It is an industrial chemical used in the production of melawares.

We all MUST understand that Melamine is used in INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION - - - - - it CANNOT be eaten.

2.Why is Melamine added to milk powder?

The most important nutrient in milk is protein.

And, Melamine has this same protein that contains 'NITROGEN'

Adding Melamine into milk reduces the actual milk content required,

and therefore it is cheaper than all milk. So it lowers the capital required

in the production of milk products. Therefore it earns the business man more profit!

It doesn't have any smell, so cannot be detected.

3.When was it discovered that it had been added to milk products.

In 2007, US cats and dogs died suddenly, they found that pet food from China contained Melamine.

Early in 2008, in China , an abnormal increase in infant cases of kidney stones was reported.

In August 2008, China Sanlu Milk Powder tested for Melamine

Sept. 2008, the New Zealand government asked China to investigate this problem

Sept. 21, 2008, they found that many food products in Taiwan tested for Melamine

4.What happens when Melamine ingested and digested?

Melamine remains inside the kidneys. It forms into stones blocking the tubes.

Pain will be imminent and the person cannot urinate. Kidney(s) will then swell.

Although surgery can remove the stones, it causes irreversible kidney damage.

It can lead to the loss of kidney function and will require kidney dialysis or lead to death

because of uremia.

What is dialysis? In fact, it should be called 'blood washing '; it is filtering all of the body's blood into

a machine and then returning the blood back to the body.

The whole process takes 4 hours; and it is necessary to have dialysis

once every 3 days for the rest of your life.

Why is it much more serious in babies?

A baby's kidneys are so very small and they drink a lot of milk powder.

China currently has 13,000 infants hospitalized.

It does not matter how much Melamine a human being ingested (ate) (took).

The important point is: 'MELAMINE CANNOT BE EATEN!'

5.What foods are to be avoided?

Foods from China that contain dairy products should be avoided.

Remember: Foods with cream or milk should be avoided.

The whole world is very afraid of "Made In China " 'black-hearted' goods.

Do you know how to differentiate which products are made in

the USA , or in the Philippines , in Taiwan , or in China ?

Here's How:

The first 3 digits of the barcode identify the country code

wherein the product was made.

For Example: ALL barcodes that start with 690, 691, 692, etc., . .

up to and including 695 are all MADE IN CHINA .

Barcodes starting with 471 are printed on products Made in Taiwan .

You have a right to know. But the government and related departments never inform or educate the public. Therefore we must educate ourselves, be vigilant, and RESCUE ourselves.

Today, Chinese businessmen know that consumers will not select products 'Made in China '. So, they make every effort not to show or state the country of origin on their products. However, you can now refer to the barcode.

Do remember if the first 3 digits are one of those between 690 and 695 inclusive then it is a product 'Made in China ' .

Unfortunately, the first 3 digits (EAN) of the bar code do NOT always indicate the product's country of origin. There are ways to get around it.

I snoped this and this is true!

Really? I "Snoped" this and it was False.

Snopes stated that the first 3 numbers of EAN (European Article Number - not a US barcode) barcodes state where the code was ASSIGNED but not neccesarily country of origin.

You should look for Country of Origin labels on packaging.

I find myself avoiding all C of O - China products if possible.

I feel you really understand both sides of the coin; being the one with the diagnosis and being the loved one of that person. Texanjana, thanks so very much for your empathy & for your prayers. There has been a new development. Day before yesterday when my sister went to get her chest x-ray for pre-admission/pre-surgery, they found "something" on her lung. Today she had a CT done. Just talked to Peggy and all they determined via the CT was that there is a "mass" on her lung. The details still remain sketchy. They want to do a "fine needle aspiration" & a PET scan next week. She needs to call Monday to schedule those tests as no one was around this afternoon to do that. They have cancelled the surgery for Tuesday. She's hanging in there! I think she's looking forward to having a quiet day at home tomorrow (no tests) to "chill out!" Then we'll all be over to bug her on Sunday! Hopefully by the end of next week we'll have a better idea of exactly what she has & how it should be treated. Again, thanks to each of you for your interest, support and prayers.

Shortly after my wife decided that she preferred to live on her own, I went to board (for 4 years) with an old lady in her 80s who'd been known to our family for years ... Dad was pallbearer at her aunt's funeral (that she'd cared for while bedridden) on the day that psych. hosp. called to say that Mom died and I, age 13, went to tell him. Bessie, never married (fiance soldier killed in W W I) had been a pediatric nurse, was a lovely spirit and in good health in her 80's. I don't think that I ever heard her say anything sharp or nasty about anyone. Everyone in the village loved her ... but they tended to head for the hills when they saw her little blue Falcon coming down the street. I thank her sweet spirit for heading off my feelings of bitterness against females at the time. She spent several years in a retirement-nursing home, couldn't see or hear well near the end of life, but had she lived another 4 months would have achieved 105. She was missed by many. And, I hope, quite a number may have chosen to alter some of the things in their lives for the better as a result of seeing her, a quiet Christian, in action. I am thankful for Bessie's ministry in my life. ole joyful

Thanks so much to all who took the time to read and comment on my post, and for the great warmth and kindness of your responses. I must say I was nervous about posting; while realising many of us are going through very challenging times with our and our loved ones' health, speaking about this always feels quite excruciatingly personal, like revealing an ugly scar in public... but I was determined to do something for awareness day this year, having failed for several years in succession to contribute. I'll try to respond to every comment, in order: KS: You're welcome, and I do hope the info will be helpful to your friend. S/he should definitely watch the movie! Re symptoms: ME/CFS has an enormous list of around 40-50 symptoms, involving every body system - someone once said ME seems to include just about everything you could possibly experience with any illness, or words to that effect. We each have our own selection of them, to varying degrees of severity, which, once we're sure we've got the hang of dealing with them, morphs into something else! Or so it seems... If s/he hasn't already, your friend may like to google the (most comprehensive) Canadian Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for ME/CFS and the (most up to date, I think) International Consensus Criteria, which between them have a full list of symptoms, and explain which ones are currently thought to be essential and which are optional for an ME/CFS diagnosis. A full set of blood tests, etc must be done too, to exclude all the other known medical and psychiatric conditions that could be causing that individual's symptoms. There are also some excellent websites/forums to visit for more support and info, such as Phoenix Rising and Health Rising. Please pass on to her/him my thoughts and best wishes. Many of us eventually give up on the medical profession altogether. Not uncommonly abandoned by disbelieving family, and friends with whom we're no longer able to keep up socially; invisible to the wider public; we use Dr Google and the worldwide online patient community, along with whatever inner resilience we can muster as our resources. The bar codes represent where the end product itself was made. It does not indicate where the ingredients used to manufacture the product came from.

For instance, if you are buying a frozen cake, the cake itself may have been made in the US but the raw ingredients such as powdered milk may have come from China (and the sugar came from the Bahamas, and the oil came from Italy, and the eggs came from........ ect.)

I wouldn't feed my baby regular infant formula...back almost 30 years ago, so I sure wouldn't feed it to one now. It was breast milk all the way. I feel so badly for the little babies fed that formula in China.

I have just almost completely quit buying any premade processed foods. I eat meat, vegetables, and fruit and I don't like buying it from Mexico or Chile either, but sometimes buy it for the possums, and of course, I buy bananas, wherever they come from.

Maybe I'm reading the barcodes wrong. I'm having problems matching up barcodes with the codes even when the label states country of origin.

For instance, I have a can of sliced bamboo shoots. The can states that this is a product of China and it was imported by JFC International in California. The bar code is 01115245304.

I also have a can of smoked oysters impoted by Crown Prince in California that states it is a product of China. The barcode is 07323000051. I'm not sure how old this purchase is so it may pre-date the current barcode system. The bamboo shoots can is a recent purchase. Normally, I avoid made in China, but I would expect bamboo shoots to come from a country like China.

The zeros at the beginning of the code is a smaller zero. I never know whether to include that in the code. I did include it here.

I do have a huge bag of Riceland Rice which states that it is a product of the USA. I know Riceland grows rice in Arkansas so I believe this claim. The barcode is 00035200055932. That code does match up.

I'm really trying to avoid anything from China. Today in Lowes, though, I needed a replacement globe for a ceiling fan and the only globes were from China. Why don't they carry any made in the U.S. or other countries? I would've paid a little more if I had to.

I really think anything circulated via an e-mail should be thoroughly vetted before it is spread. Snopes is always a good place to check, as is Google.

I live in an agricultural area of my state. There is a dairy farm (yes, cows) in the next town. I always buy products made by this dairy farm. I will not buy other brands, even famous national brands.

Whenever you get something in an email, it's best to assume it's FALSE until proven true. Especially if it has FWD or FW in the subject! It generally takes less time to verify it's a hoax than it takes to send the email to everyone in your address book. If it says they checked it with Snopes, CNN or God, it's a pretty safe bet they didn't. And if it said something like "send this to everyone you know...", DON'T!

It's also a good idea to educate the person who sends you this spam. I cannot understand why people give email such absolute gospel-level of credibility on the most incredible things. Bill Gates WON'T pay you to send emails, nor will AOL; there's no bill to tax emails (though there should be); there is nobody who was charged $250 for a cookie recipe; there's no kidney theft ring working hotels and the Nigerian General WON'T make you a millionaire. (He promised that to me!)

I've thought it would be interesting to test a theory: Send out an email telling everyone to stand in the middle of the road, flap their arms and cluck like a chicken at high noon on Christmas Day or the troops will not have underwear for two months. Just add that I checked it out and it's true. I wonder how many roads would be blocked by crowds? I suspect that many roads would would be impassable.

Email hoaxes are a virus of their own. They tie up bandwith and cause trouble the world over. They cost people and companies money. Please don't feed the spammers.
