Tickets are booked!!!

Joe and I are going to London, England in September, I can't wait! We booked the hotel and airline tickets today, we are staying at a hotel right next to the London Eye, overlooking the Thames with the Houses of Parliament on the other side. We are staying for 6 days, we are going to pack as much as we can into those 6 days. I already know some things I want to see/do:

London Eye

Trafalgar Square

National Gallery

Zoo

British Museum

Tower Bridge

Westminster Abbey

Buckingham Palace/Changing of the Guard

Harrods

Royal Botanic Gardens

I am sure once we get there, there will be a ton more things we will want to see and do. I plan on taking a gazillion pictures!!!

Be sure and try some scones and clotted cream & jam. I don't remember the name of the hotel we stayed in, but I had them every morning for breakfast.
I was only there for 4 days, of a 10 day holiday, as my dad got real sick, and I was called home. But I did get the see the palace and guards and grounds. I also got to walk around in the area where the barristers (sp) are, and some of the old building, and had an excellent guide. My dear son-in-law. He was born and raised there.

Karen, while at Buckingham Palace be sure to find the Newfoundland Gate. When you are facing the palace, it is over on the other side of the street on the right, one of the gates on the park there. It says Newfoundland! Have a wonderful grand time in London!

I'll be back in Canada by then, our time in Belgium is just about at an end. I love my country, but I'm having a hard time coming to terms with leaving Europe.

Last time we went to an event there, we arrived at 11 a.m. All parking lots adjacent/under, etc., were full. Even the valet parking staff were not accepting any more cars. We were directed by police officers to drive to a parking lot several blocks away across from the Design Center, where we were told we would be picked up by a trolley and brought back to the BCC. We got lost! Finally found a parking spot on the 4th floor of the garage. When we got down to the trolley stop on the first level, there were about 200 people waiting. We finally made it to the BCC about 12:30 p.m. Public transportation may be the best way. Someone said that there are shuttles from South Station? Haven't tried that yet.

A few thoughts - --I had to cancel an American flight last year, and I think the fee was $200 or $250. --Typically you have one year to use the credit from a cancellation, but it's one year from when you made the original reservation, NOT one year from when your original flight was. So pay close attention to the expiration date, since it's likely earlier than your original flight date. Also ask to make sure whether you have to fly by the expiration date, or just book by the expiration date. --I don't think I had to fly to the same destination as the original flight (even though I did), but I think it did have to be the same person taking the replacement flight. I'm not sure about that because I was planning to use my credit anyway, but I seem to recall the agent saying something about that. It's worth asking if you're considering trying to combine both your and your husband's flight credits for one flight for one of you or something like that - they may not let you do that. --Cancel before the day your first flight takes off. If you wait until after your first flight leaves, then you're considered a no-show and I think your options may not be as good? --When I cancelled my flight, I found the way they worded the credit confusing. If you pay $1,000 for a flight (just to keep the numbers round!) and the fee is $200, I expected to be told that I had an $800 credit. But they tell you that you have a $1,000 credit, and the fee will be deducted when you go to re-book the flight. So it amounts to the same thing - you still have $800 of usable credit, I just found the wording confusing. I think maybe they phrase it that way in case they decide to increase the fee before you use the credit, and then they'd be deducting the new higher fee from your credit instead.

Oh, I love Great Britian! I took my DD there (and Paris) for her high school graduation in 2003. We had a blast. I had been there 25 years previous and it was still as fun and charming as I had remembered all through the years.

Don't miss the Covent Garden area. We enjoyed that and the Nottinghill area quite a bit. We also walked around the neighborhood next to Kensington Palace where all the different Embassy countries representatives live. It's open only to foot traffic if you don't live there. Plus you get a view of Kensington as you walk.

Wondrful, Casey. I will be looking forward to all your wonderful pictures. I know you will show us a London that not many of will get to see. Seeing all those places through your eyes/camera will be a real treat.

You are going to love it. I'm not a fan of big cities but I loved London. Be sure to go to the Tower of London and Madam Toussaud's wax museum.

For the Changing of the Guards be sure to check the schedule.
We were there twice and the second time there was a huge crowd waiting and nothing happened. Finally we got word that they only did the ceremony on certain days due to budget cuts. That was a long time ago so it may not still apply but check to be sure so you aren't disappointed.

Don't forget Portobello Road if you like antiques and whimsical stuff...(it's in the Notting Hill area)Also if you have time, take the train to BRIGHTON...(and find SNOOPERS if you make it to Brighton...a junk lovers dream store!)you'll fall in love with that town! Lewes is another little town that is a must see!

You must be staying where I stayed...The Marriott. My room looked right out on the Thames and Westminster Bridge.

For a neat experience. Book dinner at Rules on Maiden Lane, the oldest restaurant in London. I throughly recommend it.

One thing I did...was to book a day trip to Paris with Britainshrinkers (www.Britianshrinkers.com) on the Eurostar chunnel train. Left the train station (station is just behind your hotel) at about 7am, and was back in my hotel by 10pm. I took the fully escorted day trip. Kind of neat to "hop over to Paris" for a day.

Casey, just to let you know, if you want to Westminster Abbey, get there as early as you can. DH & I were there a couple of years ago, and it was a 2 hour lineup to get in! We ended up having to skip it, because we had a schedule we were trying to stick to, and that would have made us miss other things.

One of the best things we did was take the train to Bath, and toured the Roman Baths, then from there to Salisbury, where we took a bus to see Stonehenge. It was amazing!
We left early in the morning, and were back by around 8pm or so.

We were there for 7 days, and took thousands of pictures!

And be sure to eat some pie and mash, my Mum's personal favorite and best memory of living in London. That, and fish and chips, of course. She advises- skip the eels, too bony. lolol

You're going to have a blast, Casey, I'm happy for you and hope time flies for you between now and Sept.

Have a great time. Can't wait to see the pics. A friend flew to London after wanting to make the journey for many years. That is quite a trek in a single engine plane, and he was too tired to get in all the places that he wanted to see. Soak up all the sights while you're there and bring them back to KT.
