TP - When Did It Get So Narrow?

When I changed the toilet paper roll I realized the new roll was quite narrow. So...the manufacturers are touting 'double rols, softer, etc.' while giving you less width? Wish I had the old TP packaging to compare square footage.

It's been like that for awhile now! And, if you look at the cardboard core..it's bigger around!

You are both right!

I think I posted a while ago that inside a below-the-sink bathroom cabinet, I installed a cheapie paper-towel roll, shaped like an elongated "L" so I could slide extra rolls of TP on and be able to open the door and grab one should I be in an, um, unexpected need for backup.

That's when I realized the differences -- an old roll from Costco vs a new one from Costco. And I think Angel Soft (or was it Northern?) was even worse -- and those were advertised as the double rolls! It certainly doesn't last as long.

This is one product that I wish they'd have just increased the price instead of reducing how much you get!

Many commercial potting soils are quite heavy and can become hard and compacted with regular watering and the small roots of young transplants have a hard time growing through them. Seed starting mixes can become very expensive if you have a lot of plants to pot up. I use a soilless mix containing peat and perlite, Sunshine Professional Growers mix is my favorite (I have no connection with the company other than to admire their product). Plant roots develop well in this lighter mix. It tends to cost more than potting soil, and if you have a lot of transplanting to do, you could mix it half and half with potting soil, or mix a good amount of peat and/or perlite in with your potting soil to make it looser and lighter. I don't like the mixes, soilless or otherwise, that contain fertilizer as that is something I prefer to control myself based on the needs of the plants I am potting up. kms

Were you present at the visitation before the funeral? Often many of the friends bring stories of various interesting or humourous experiences that they had with your FIL, over the years ... as they've had a couple of days to think of their relationship, since the death. If you were not, perhaps if you ask some of the people who were there, they'll have some stories to tell that will ease your pain some (and theirs, as they recount it). I've thought that we should take a tape recorder into the funeral homes to record some of those stories. Often it's good to do something, rather than sit and sweat. Perhaps if you know of some task that he would like to do for some mutual friend, to warm someone's heart, and go do it in his stead, it would warm your heart, as well, and ease its pain some. ole joyful

Rebecca, That's great to hear. I'm feeling content with our purchase so far, but I haven't started using the light yet. I'm planning on installing it today as a matter of fact. For some reason I dragged my feet about getting those adjustable hangers, more because I just got busy, so today I'm just going to hang them with S hooks and chains so I can get started sowing seed and I will order the adjustable hangers today as well. I love hearing about the positive experience you've had with them. I have never liked having to adjust the chains in the past. You're right, you have to hold the light up to adjust the chain. And the S hooks - if you leave them all the way open to make it easier to adjust, then when you try to move them the S hook keeps slipping off. We're going to tighten the S hooks into a closed position at the top of the chain where it attaches to our metal shelves and leave the S hook that attaches to the light fixture loose. At least I think so… [g] I was thinking of sowing onion seed, but I'm wondering if I've waited too long? Maybe I should just go with sets this year and use my space for other things. I'm starting out slow and sticking with the one four foot, four bulb light this year, but if it goes well, I may add another. What kind of bulb do you use? In the past, I think I had one cool and one white in each fixture. My husband brought me home all the same bulb and they all look like bright white. Wondering if I should take two back and exchange for cool bulbs? Thanks for your post and the photos. :-)

Are you sure you don't want a taller vanity? I recently remodeled and my short vanity was replaced by a taller one. I am on the short side - about 5' 3" and really love it although it took a week or so to get used to the new height. I can't think of anything I can do with the higher height and washing my face is way easier and less messy because there I can be more or less upright when rinsing my face with my hands. What do you envision doing that is more difficult with a higher height vanity? As others have pointed out, it's more or less than same height as a kitchen counter.

I agree with Pammy that I'd rather pay more and get the same size and amount as before.

I use the mega rolls of Charmin and have not noticed them being narrow or the cardboard changing. It did get hard to find the really large packs of it there for a month or so but now it seems to be back.

I have found at a few stores a device that hooks on to the side of your toilet tank, has a hook that hooks over the edge and is covered by the tank lid it hangs there on the side and holds 2 extra rolls of tp. I love it no more doing contortions to try to get into the cabinet when I can not stand up.

got a similar one at walmart. they also make them that hold a magazine as well as tp. I put these tp holders on all of my toilets.

Do you figure that a wire coathanger could be reconfigured to do pretty well the same job - for 0 cost?

Straighten it out, then have it make a U-turn at the bottom ...

... with enough of a stick-up to accomodate two rolls?

(Maybe cover with a chunk of old towel, if you want to hide the contents ...

... on which you could do some needle-work, if you want to fancy it up a bit).

I have to laugh when I see the latest version of a 4 roll pack of TP...I swear it looks like something the kids would put in their doll house it's so tiny! Ridiculous...who do they think they are kidding?

I found a stash of TP in the guest room bathroom. It's 4 1/2" wide on a 1 1/2" diameter roll.

The Northern Tissue from a newly opened package is 4" wide on a 2" diameter roll. The package is 24 'double' rolls and says it's 645 sq ft of paper. That's 26.875 sq ft per roll.

These little guys look *lonely* on my TP holders.

I (almost) always buy the 1000 sheet Scott or 1000 sheet store brands. Not so much of an issue there. Plus it's much cheaper, and I like the products.

I do notice the cheaper paper towels have trouble with the towel holders that clamp on the ends. Obviously they're a bit narrower so they don't hold as well, and of course fewer towels on them so I buy better stuff when on sale/clearance and hopefully have a coupon to boot.

It's been like that for quite a while. I noticed it when the rolls wouldn't stay on my holder. The holder has two pegs on springs. I kept trying different brands but no matter how expensive they were all too small. This was a real PITA because I have a recessed holder that is now useless.

I hadn't noticed. I always buy Charmin-either the soft or the strong. Both get the job done, haha.

Our bathrooms have holders recessed into the wall so we noticed it that way. It used to be that the rolls just fit, now there is neraly an inch of extra space! We too use Scotts, besides being the cheapest 'per use' it is easy on the septic tank!

Gibby3000 -- Can you modity the recessed holder with a spring loaded spindle? Remove the pegs and insert a spindle? I wonder if plumbing supply stores have a solution. There have to be millions of recessed holders out there.

Yes, I have noticed too. Rolls are narrow and you can squish them since they are not rolled tight like they used to be. The cost is out of control too.

I started buying mainly Scott after someone mentioned it on here last year. I think they are more consistant.
