Has anyone stenciled fabric? Can I do it?

I'm really wanting to change out my living room curtains for spring and summer to something lighter. I fell in love with some linen/cotton blend Ikat curtains at West Elm, but they'd run me about $600 ($84 per panel x 6 panels), which is way more than I want to spend, plus they have grommets on top which I don't want.

I've been searching for ideas to get what I want at a lower price. Ikea has white linen curtains for $50 a pair. This morning terricks posted a link (in a wallpaper thread) to a site with wall stencils, and they have a stencil for an ikat pattern that's almost identical to the West Elm curtains! So my thought is I can make my own.

Has anyone stenciled fabric? I know there is fabric paint available, but I don't know how it would look. Would it look like it was dyed or like someone painted the surface? How easy is it to get the pattern straight and not smear paint everywhere? I used to be pretty crafty, but haven't done anything similar to this.

Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Here is a link that might be useful: ikat stencil
