What's your comfort level, Stacy? I know you're not afraid to try, but have you seen sheetrocking done? There are "tricks to the trade" that you'd want to know about. Maybe read up on it first? If so, and you think you can ... then go for it. If it doesn't turn out, you can always pop it back out and put the intercom thingy back, right?

I know it can be done but I don't know if you want to try it.

If I were doing it ...I would cut a piece of drywall the same height as the cut out and about 4 inches wider. You might want to run a screw or two into center of patch piece so you can hold on to it.
Put glue on both long ends and slide the patch piece into hole. With two inches on the back of each side of the wall.

So the patch is glued to the back of the hole.

Let dry good. Remove screws. Then cut a patch the same size as the hole and it will glue to the piece you glued on. Then put on the paper tape and start the mud process.

Don't know if that is the correct way but that is how I would do and have done it before.

Use a good strong glue.

I imagine you could glue wood strips behind instead of the first piece of drywall. then you could screw the patch piece to the wood.

Ask some drywallers , they probably know a better way.

Yes, you can do it yourself.
There are most likely places you can look for instructions on the internet to do it better than the way I did it, but my way worked just fine. I did it before I owned a computer.

I don't know if I did it correctly or not and it's been a few years ago so I hope I'm remembering correctly. First I measured exactly the size of sheetrock needed. When I cut it I think I left the paper or backing maybe a half of an inch larger than the hole. I took some strong thread, probably quilting thread, and used a needle to run a length of the thread through the sheetrock leaving about 12 inches of thread hanging from the front of the sheetrock. I did this in the middle and close to each corner. Make sure it is knotted on the back of the sheetrock. I pushed the sheetrock into the hole until the backing was in and the sheetrock was snug using the thread pieces to pull it toward me as needed. After that I cut the thread and caulked around the edge and sanded til smooth once the caulk was dry. It didn't take too long. After I painted over it I couldn't tell that a hole had ever been there.

What's the worse that could happen?
Best case is you'd make it look good and be happy.
Worst case is you couldn't and have to hire someone to sheetrock the hole. As it is you either have to leave it there or hire someone to remove and patch the wall.

Home Depot has some really good self help books. When I tore down the wall in my house I used a book to learn how to relocate the electrical wiring.

Go for it! Just make sure you turn off the power before starting.

It's very easy to do, Stacy, and nothing to worry about. Don't be concerned with sheet rock, just drywall patch it and be done. I was gonna type how to do it but can't remember the name of the stuff you use to even out surface after patching, so I looked it up and found this video tutorial. It's perfect and walks you through each step with audio and visual instructions.

I'd go ahead and use the tutorial Bestlawn found. Let us see the finished wall if you can.

I'm with bunny lover on this one - the frame is okay, you could paint it a different color - what I would do is take out all the intercom crap and put up a message centre, a key rack or a framed print that matches the lovely red.

Thanks everyone I think I will give it a shot htis week.....I would just leave it and paint it or something and maybe do the pic thing but it is on a funny palce on the wall for a photo or picture...here is a shot of it with the couch there...

You might know this already, but if you do decide to plaster over the square, you'll want to try to mimic the orange peel texture of the rest of your wall. That stuff comes in a can at Lowe's or Home Depot. Look for the can that has three different straws so you can easily do light, medium, or heavy texture. Yours looks medium to me, kinda similar to what I have at my house. I found that the peaks on the medium straw were too rough and pointy to match the walls with 50 years' worth of paint on them. A few light layers of the light texture worked better. Do a sample board first so you can get the feel of the product and decide what level of texture you need!

I remember watching a home repair show doing just this sort of repair.

1. get your sheetrock cut to the size of the hole.
2. get a strip of wood - about 2" wide and 1" deep, cut to fit about 3" longer than the size of the hole.
3. get drywall screws so that you can first fit this piece of wood inside the middle of the hole and secure with screws about across the whole on either side of the whole. This piece of wood will serve as your anchor across the hole.
4. take your replacement drywall and measure or hold up to whole and mark the middle of the wood piece on each side of your piece so you can ruler draw a straight line across the drywall to mark a 'screw line'.
5. With your wood behind the wall, secured across the whole on either side with screws, now insert your drywall replacement in the whole, using the marked line as a guide, place a couple of screws to screw your drywall to the wood and secure it in place.
6. Now your wall replacement is in and you can prepare your wall for plaster/finishing.

I hope this makes sense.
