I think my Blue Jay has Southern Blight---what can I do?

Poor baby has dying leaves that pull easily out of the soil. How can I treat it?

You want to take care of it immediately. Move it away from the others. (I'm assuming your hosta are still in pots.) It's in the soil, so you want to get rid of the soil. I don't know if you remember Moccasin, but she used Hydrogen Peroxide. She watered it down, but I don't remember the mixture. It's a fungus, so things that will kill mold will most likely kill the rot. Just get rid of the spores, or they will spread to other hosta. (Trash the soil and put it in new soil.)

Here are some suggestions from the American Hosta Society. They suggest chemicals and/or a bleach solution.

Yes, it depends on the specific Raid formulation as to how extensive the collateral damage might be. Raid Ant and Roach Killer (pretty popular product and one that is applied as a spray rather than a bait) has a couple of active ingredients that could pose mortality to various insects and soil organisms if applied heavily enough. Typically, the spray needs to come in contact with the critter and it would have had to have been an extremely heavy spray to soak down into the soil to any significant degree. I'd suspect that unless hubby emptied the can in this location, the Raid is not the reason insect life seems so slight. Soil dwelling insects are not always readily apparent with cursory digging and temperature, soil moisture and the presence of other natural predators could all have an effect. Did you actually see dead specimens in the soil or just not see much activity at all? There's a big difference. Personally, I'd not be overly concerned about the fate of your organic garden. Just continue on as intended but suggest hubby keep the sprays well away in the future. Even approved 'organic' pesticides like pyrethrins can have an impact on beneficial, non-target organisms.

Marti8a ~ Between the oppressive heat, my determination *not* to run up the water bill, and my lower back pain . . . I made the deliberate decision to let the entire backyard go last summer. In the past 3 weeks (since the tornadoes & hail), I've spent more time in the yard than I did all of 2011! Lots of storm debris, but lots and lots of 2011 weeds and leaves. I strongly 2nd someone's earlier recommendation that you employ a lawn service for a season (month, summer, year) -- you can select the $$ or type or method of service. So they could weed or they could napalm or they could use only organic . . . its your choice. But this will kickstart the project until it gets to a level you can manage. I did the same thing with a cleaning service last year -- I've never used a cleaning service before, but things had gotten out of control (both cleaning & life in general), so we did a one-time turbo clean for the kitchen, one bathroom and the living area, and I'm so glad I did. ~ freshair

I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Has anyone tried tinting the final coat to tone down the orange/reds? Does that work? Appreciate any help/advice. Thank you all!

We don't know where you live and Southern Blight is not all that common and is predominately a regional issue of tropical and sub-tropical areas and we in zone 7 don't normally fall into the area. So I'm just suggesting that I wouldn't be too quick to jump to that conclusion unless you get confirmation. I'm not disputing that may be it, just that it would be unusual for it to develop so quickly in a single plant where the rest show no symptoms. Plus there are several other fungus possibilities and all have somewhat different treatments in addition to heavy fungicide use. It would be worth taking a sample to the local county ag extension office for diagnosis. Just something to consider. Dave

I had that fungus kill one of my hosta about 2 yrs ago and I dug all around it and removed the soil--put soil/dead plant/roots in a trash bag and sent it to the dump. I think I did a bleach drench in the hole. Planted a chain fern in its spot and it is doing great. Have already had to remove babies from around the fern and stick them elsewhere because it loved the miracle grow garden soil that I filled the hole with. It hasn't spread to any other hosta plants nearby. Good luck.
