I also have the Samsung front loaders. I liked them at first, but after a while I noticed my clothes weren't smelling fresh, so I got some of the washer cleaner packets and those helped a little. I read that the liquid detergents had wax in them which built up in the drum of the washer and caused bad smells so I quit using liquid Gain and switched to Ajax powdered which was okay, but still I wasn't happy. Recently I switched to Cheer Bright and Clean powder and my clothes are smelling fresh again.

I'll try the crystals cause I do like a little scent on my clothing. Thanks for the review!

i have not tried those, their smell is pretty strong to me in the aisle by them, which is how i actually stumbled across this product lol. DH does not like any scent at all. we love the sears powder but neither of us will go into the sears store to buy it lol and here in orlando's humidity that big tub would turn into a huge rock. Dh found an eco-liquid HE detergent that is scent free at Sam's Club we use and like just as much. maybe i will give one of the crystal versions a try thou for my towels...i like scent to last too ~ liz

I haven't tried those products, I have gone to the cheaper brands and I can't tell any difference in the results. I will stick with them, it's more than half what I paid for Tide. I love nice smells but close up they just smell like chemicals and burn my eyes. I can't sleep on sheets with with fragrance in laundry soap. I did try a liquid Gain softener called apple mango tango and it didn't smell so strong on my towels and will try that on my sheets. It's liquid.

I use Sears washing powder and if you watch carefully the sales sheets, you will find it for half price and that's when I stock up.....I'm with vala no fragrances ..... When I use the homemade detergent and you don't even need a softener with that.........

I use Cheer, granular, and Bounce Free and Sensitive sheets; has no dyes or perfumes.

I believe many people use too much detergent. Of course I'm not washing greasy or otherwise really dirty clothes, but even for that Cheer recommends 3/4 cup for even the heaviest dirty clothes.

So much easier to use.

My DD has LG front loader and dryer. I dislike them. They take twice as long to wash and to dry, and the seams of the clothing are always damp even when I set the dryer for 1 hour, which is the longest cylce. Lots of things do not dry completely and have to be re run. Ugh, and she has 2 little ones and lots of laundry! I'll take my top loader and old dryer any day and will repair them till I absolutely MUST replace them.

I just bought some of the Purex Crystals yesterday and have my first load of laundry hanging on the line! (Everything smells better on the line no matter what!)

I had some Purex laundry sheets that had the detergent, softener, and dryer sheet all in one and I loved the scent on those. I like to change scents - so I thought I would give the Purex Crystals a go.

I also have the Spring scent.

My laundry is worthy of a detergent companies commercial. Shop grease, manure, grass stains (some of that is recycled grass through a horse) - real nasty stuff! I don't use huge amounts of detergent though. I find a second wash does a better job if needed. More detergent in a load doesn't help.

I have the regular top loading machines - wouldn't trade them for the newer front loads.

I was worried I would not like the front loaders because of some of the complaints that have been mentioned, however I have been very pleasantly surprised at how much I am liking them. I actually set mine on less dry and everything is perfectly dry, my husband does his dress shirts on perm press and dries them on that setting also and they come out perfect. Have not tried the steam feature yet. To me the wash cylce is longer usually on normal around 50 mins but the dryer is super fast since it is such high velocity so all in all my time is pretty close to the same as my old set.
It seems there is major differences in some of these areas between manufacturers.
The moldy smell is why I do not want to use liquid detergents and softners according to the manufacturer the build up in the detergent drawer can cause that to happen.
I do keep a container of the purex pop up sheets in the laundry room and wipe down my washer door seal after done washing.
I do not like an over whelming scent but I do like a fresh clean scent which is what that combo is giving me.
I keep my laundry powder in a large tupperware container that seals tightly so don't think there will be a dampness issue, never had one with the other powders I have had.

The Sears detergent comes with a little measuring cup that is perfect for the FL washer, it takes so little detergent compared to the old washer. I was very skeptical and worried about going with FL's but so far I am quite happy.

I did find a great selection of youtube videos done by a company that works on them that are tutorials on how to keep them clean and keep the smell from happening and how to clean the trap etc, very helpful series.

Thanks for posting about them. I'm going to look for some now. I couldn't get the $1 coupon on FB like the link said, but still going to try them. I always use liquid softeners. DD was just telling about cleaning out her softener dispenser on her machine, they do leave a lot of gunk.

I too use Sears Free of Dyes and Perfumes. I hadn't been able to find it because the smaller stores don't carry it. I thought I would have to order it over the internet for $19.99 a box. This week-end we were visiting our son 2 hours away and Sears was having a store closing sale. We got the last two boxes of the Free of Dyes and Perfumes for 7.99 a box. They should last me a long time.

wow that was a good price you got on that Sears detergent. I happened to go into the Sears Hardware store near me the day they were having a 15% off sale which gave me a nice discount.

The crystals are fairly new here but Henkel the company that makes them have had something similar in the UK and other countries from what I have read.

What is the HE..?

I have an aprox. 30 year old Whirlpool washing maching that is still chugging along, washing 4 adults every week.

Are these crystals something I can use???

I've had the Kenmore front loading washer and dryer
for over 6 years now and like them although I like the
top loaders too.
I always leave the washer door opened a little when not
in use as I read mold could build if it can't dry out.
Don't know if that's true though..
I bought the crystals with a coupon to try them out but
haven't used them yet...

HE is High Efficiency, Patti - that is the new front load machines.

The softener crystals are for all machines.

I have an old Maytag that is older than your whirlpool! It does a great job too - just really small. I have a large capacity Maytag also that is about 10 years old. I have a LOT of laundry :) Just one more person in the house than you - but they sure can go through the laundry! LOL!

yes you can use the HE products in any machine but are only supposed to use HE labeled stuff in the Front Loaders.
In fact for Samsung they told me it would void my warranty if I used regular detergent, supposedly it does something to the seals.
The Front load washers use very little water so the detergents are made to work that way and not lather up near as much.

I'm another Sears Free user. I also use regular liquid Clorox on whites. I don't want laundry to smell. i just want it clean. Sears does the job well and I use very little per load.

I have a front load Samsung. I don't leave the door open. But t with a front loader you can do small loads without guilt so I use it too often to grow mold. Plus the towels and sheets get a shot of bleach.

HE machines, whether front or top loaders need a low sudsing detergent. It doesn't matter if it's labeled "HE" or not, it's the amount of suds it creates. HE machines have been around for decades and "HE" detergents are relatively new. It's just that certain detergents are low-sudsing and some are high sudsing. Mostly a sales gimmick since people didn't believe there was detergent in there without seeing suds.

Cheer Free has a reputation for being a fine and low sudsing detergent. There are many others. And not all detergents with the "HE" label are HE detergents, rather some are "HE compatible"

For a newbie, it's a good idea to start with HE detergents until you learn how to use a machine. Just don't be fooled into thinking that you can't overdose with "HE" detergent and thereby oversuds and therefrom cause problems in the machine. The fact is, there's no way they can tell if you used HE or non-he. They will find symptoms of too much of either.

For detergents, I don't buy scented detergents. I do *not* want my clothes smelling of chemicals for a week! Stench free and dye free for me. I go with the philosophy used by my ancestors: When clothes smell, it's time to wash them! I choke going down the detergent and cleaner aisles in stores. People want to breathe that? I used some scented detergents and couldn't continue. I had to give some of it away and dump the rest. I couldn't stand the stench. It's like scented candles. I cough continually around them. Makes you wonder what you're breathing. I did find one scent I didn't find totally repulsive and that was the Gain Apple Mango Tango. But I decided quickly that I didn't want to go around smelling like a fruit basket. Nope, I'll stick with dye/stench free. Currently I'm using Tide Free/Sensitive Skin, now called Tide Free & Gentle. I bought 5 bottles for 36â a bottle and have a couple left. Plus I have other detergents I got free or even got paid to take it home. Although I did buy some Era Free to give that a try. Haven't used Era in years and years so I'll see what the new formula is like.
