replacing a liner with cantilever coping?

had a pool put in last august and we are looking into doing the patio around the pool.we have a liner pool and right now it has the traditional white coping.if i decide to go with a cantilever coping,and down the road need to replace the liner,how is this done?may be a stupid question,but this is our 1st pool.

i dont have a deck.its a new pool.my pb put the white coping which if i go poured concrete will go up to the couping.i kind of like a canteliver coping so im not sure how that will play if i need to replace the liner down the road.if i want a canteliver coping,what is involved?this white coping i have is just screwed down.maybe i need something different.

I just got a price for liner and pavers. Liner replacement price is in line at 3k, but everything else seems high. Regular paver coping is 47 a foot, pavers installed is 13 a square foot, an additional 1k for new brass anchors, aluminum tubes and install for cover, almost 1k to set the ladder and 2 stair rail cups, the pavers are nothing special. Total for 100 feet of coping, 600 square ft of pavers, liner, new bonding, anchors, etc is almost 20k. And that's no taking out the old pavers.. Any opinions or suggestions on contractors for another price? Just seems about 20 percent high...maybe I'm wrong.

We did not go over that option, of removing part of the concrete and replacing the coping in that section. I wish I had thought to ask about that! It would be $9400 to do the following: 20mil liner replacement (21X 42 irregular shape)$2600 step replacement (involves drilling out concrete around steps) $3000 new flat coping to go under current coping $1800(would leave existing coping which is cracked there) 2 new skimmers $800 new liner pad underneath liner $200 labor $1000 I know the new coping would not match (in color) the new coping. I don't know if that is why the pool guy did not suggest just replacing one part of the coping. My guess is it would not be a big enough job for him, maybe not enough money in it? I wish I knew more about pool construction.

Hi Muddy_water...cant see your pic... Here is my picture of the steps on the steel. Understanding that the mortar bed is layed next to the pool how would you handle the steps? I would think the best approach would be to screw tile backerboard to the top lip and the mortar will adhere to the backer board. 1/4" or even 3/8" would be enough. What do you think?

Help me solve water behind liner after remodel

20 year old 18 x 40 x16 vinyl liner, galvanized steel side walls with concrete bottom. This is the 4th liner we have had installed in this pool. The concrete coping edge was cut off flush with the wall of the pool in order to install new composite decking coping. (We installed the new composite decking on top of the existing concrete pool deck). To construct new coping 2 x 6 composite decking joist were installed flush into the existing concrete pool deck. This was done in order to replace the old concrete coping( that was saw cut off) so that the new composite coping could be screwed into the composite joists and square up the edge of the pool. Currently water is getting between our new vinyl liner and the galvanized side walls. We are not sure how it is getting there. We know we have groundwater issues and are putting in a new french drain system to alleviate water leaching into the side walls from underneath the old concrete pool deck. However, we are wondering if water could be getting behind the liner track because of installation of the composite coping. We suspect water is leaking through the coping and getting behind the track of the pool liner. Do we need to cover the composite joist area with a waterproof membrane (such as a roofing ice and water shield) before installing the surface coping made from composite decking? We have water tested the new coping and determined that water is coming from the old concrete coping area going down the surface of the liner but cannot determine if it is going behind the liner track? Has anyone experienced water getting behind the liner from leaking behind the liner track?

Its's possible to change the coping but it might (50/50) need a liner change too. Several factors need to be right such as weather, liner condition...

The problem you have is the liner attaches to the coping in order to change the coping you will have to have a new liner track attached and then pour the new coping....So with that you may have to have a new liner.

if the liner attaches to the coping and i need the liner replaced down the road,im sure i dont have to rip up part of the decking to replace the liner correct?this is what my coping looks like now,just wondering if there is any chance i can have a canteliver edge without needing to replace the current coping?

The liner's track is attached to the coping. Future liner changes will not effect the canter levered decking. It "may" be possible to change the existing coping one section at a time. Hence, my 50/50 statement.

I agree poolguynj, A new liner track will be installed and future liner replacement will not be a issue. I will reset a liner (take it out and reset it) If it is under 3yrs old with no problem. But with canteliver edge being installed the liner may not fit as well as it does now (you may have a few wrinkles). But I would be prepared to have to get a new liner just in case.
