water shutoff valves in tight places, best quality valves

anyone have any tips/better tools for replacing shut off valves in tight places and the best valves to buy?

I replaced one of these under the sink a few years ago and needed to change a valve on the sink recently ... the new looking ball valve I bought at home depot would not shut the water off completely on the hot side ... still dripping ... any better quality suppliers please advise ... I will order over the internet to get better ones if needed.

sick of shutting of the main to make repairs ... considering liquid wrench and some kind of impact wrench to crack off some of the old valves! dunno ... every HOWTO site claims these are easy to replace but in tight places I don't think this is the case.
