Traveling to Front Royal, VA

On Friday we traveled to Front Royal, Virginia to visit Wanda VA. This is our base camp and we are doing day trips to Washington from here.

Wanda and Stan have been wonderful hosts to us and we have thoroughly enjoyed being in their home. We have had dinner with them every night and have been getting back to the RV by 10. We just all get to talking and the time flies bye.

Here are some pictures that I took on our drive here. The beautiful rolling hills with the flowering trees and bushes are gorgeous.

We will be leaving here early on Sunday morning headed to Pennsylvania to have a get together at Lynn D's house. Then we will drive to Gazania's house to spend a couple of days with her and her husband.

Stan and I were thrilled to have them here! This is Nita's third visit with us, but it was the first time we met Mike and Timm--but we felt as though we knew them already. Nicest people in the world! I felt so bad for Nita with her back pain, and am glad she was able to get relief. Nita was lucky, because there have been times that Stan and I have had to wait almost 5 minutes to be treated. Our local hospital is amazing (years ago, it was rated as one of the top hospitals in the country for patient satisfaction). I tried every argument to keep them from leaving (even threatened to ask the State Police to close down the roads leading out of town), but Nita has a schedule--and she sticks to it!! I just hope she, Mike and Timm will be back one day...the sooner, the better. BTW, I am holding Rambo...our lovable Yorkie, who found a new best friend in Timm!

I wish I had known you were going to be in this area--there is a wonderful bookstore, called the Royal Oak Bookshop in Front Royal (it's only about 8 miles east of the I-81/I-66 junction). It has been in business since forever--it's in an old house, with different types of books in the different rooms. They sell both new and used books, and their used book prices are really low. I for one think everyone has had a great comment here, and I would combine the answers into one plan! If this were my yard, I would enlarge that paved area by about three times - at least out to the ac unit and out to the line of the downspout. I think having that paved area (whether it's concrete, stones, pavers, whatever) would just help define the area, and as it stands now that walkway is too tiny and utilitarian. A bigger area will give some definition to the area as an entryway, a sitting area, etc, and look better in scale to the house. Might even be nice to have a pathway connect from that to whatever other path/walkway you have in the yard. I can't tell from the photo if there is already one there or that is just dirt. I have three rain barrels, and love them. I should note that not a one is connected to a downspout, as DH won't hear of cutting into the downspouts, so I can only dream of the abundance of water I'd have if I did! However, even without that, mine do fill up slowly but nicely, and I do use them with watering cans, either dipped in, or under the spigot, as my barrels are on cinderblocks to give just enough height to get a watering can under. These rain barrels help me cut down on my well use, and IMO are a great idea in general in terms of water conservation. I'm not quite sure WHERE you want to put a garden - along the wall where the ac unit is? To the left of the photo where that bag is? Extending it out from the bag to cover that green area? Is that where the moss is? IMO, you can have a garden almost anywhere, if you have the right plant for the spot. I've put in a bog-type garden in an area where it floods every spring, and which sometimes has standing water well into August. Again, it's the matter of the right plant. Determine just how wet this area is, and do your homework researching plants that like that moisture level and the sun levels you have. Amending the soil helps, but do it as nature would - don't try to change the soil there, but enhance it. It will take some trial and error but I'm sure it can be done. There are many plants you can use. As for moss, I too don't understand why some people dislike it so much. I had a friend who I used to help in her garden, and we live in a very wooded area. She had a quite damp yard, and lots of shade and trees, and along the edge of the lawn she had these wide swaths of moss - a good 10 to 15 feet deep from edge of lawn to woods. She tried for years to get rid of it and get grass to grow. I always told her it looked wonderful, it was soft, green, and from a distance who could tell? She was constantly worried about the resale value of not having a lawn (and it's going on a least 25 years that she's been in the house and worrying about this!). The one downfall to moss, IMO, is that it does rake up very easily when you are raking up leaves, so that is a pain. But other than that, if its green and nothing else will grow there (in terms of lawn, not garden), then that is the plant to have there! I don't know. I guess I'm just a big believer in working with nature and not against her. Good luck and keep us posted on your evolving garden! Dee

We travel with three cats. Two of them have no desire to go outside at all. The long hair gray and white has gotten out a few times on past trips. He has jumped out the door but cats stop and look around to see where they are at and you can pretty easily just pick him up. He has gotten under the motor home and Mike has had to go get him. This trip he hasn't even tried to get out and we have been on the road for six weeks now.

Each of them has a collar with a rabies tag, identification tag and micro chip identification number tag.

Oh so beautiful traveling during this time of the year. Flowers are blooming and trees are full of blooms. Looks like your kitties enjoyed the warmth of the sun.

I agree with others about your photos, keep 'em comin'. Be save on your trip Nita.

Nita-- I should've mentioned this in my post on the Bull Run thread you started, but if you and your husband are history buffs, the Washington Post has one of its special Civil War sesquicentennial inserts in the weekend paper. You can find it in the grocery stores/7-11s/etc on Saturday -- but be sure it's marked as the early edition of the Sunday paper (not the thin little Saturday paper).

msmagoo, I didn't realize you were in this area. We could have gotten together while Nita was here--but she's leaving early in the morning. Maybe one day, you and I can meet for lunch in between our two towns.

I was in Front Royal one time. Isn't it the eastern end of the Skyline Drive? We had lunch at a cute restaurant and snooped around in a bookstore. I bought a book that is A Field Guide to Trees of North America. I am shopping for a tree right now, so I have been referring to it. It was way early spring when I was there, not so pretty as now. In fact, I think it snowed in the higher elevations.

dedtired, Front Royal is the start of the Skyline Drive. Our bookstore is a forever fixture in this little town--people come from all over the country to visit the Royal Oak Bookstore.

I'm just up I-81 above Martinsburg, WV; my granddaughter and her two sons live in Linden, and Front Royal is where they shop. It's a lovely little town and since I'm a D.C. native, have been familiar with this area all of my life. There are many beautiful places in the U.S., but the Shenandoah Valley can hold its own with them, IMO.

mwheel, I didn't realize you were in this area. We live between Front Royal and Linden (we are actually closer to Linden). I was born in DC and grew up in Silver Spring; moved here when we retired in 1994.

Maybe we can meet sometime when you are visiting your granddaughter.

Thanks for the info, Wanda. I will write down the name of that book store. I think the place we had lunch was right across the street. I guess we did the Skyline Drive backwards, because that's where we ended up. I flew to Atlanta and met my friend who had picked up a car, then we drove north (wandering this way and that, stopping in Asheville) back to Philadelphia.
