cncguy; question about your L-shaped pool

Hey!

I was considering a 20x40 rect vinyl here in CT but remembered you built an L shaped pool. I also saw a T-shaped pool on another web site so I got to thinking about changing my plans. The basic price on the 20x40 quoted by my PB is $22k. (That's just the pool; no decking, heater or fence in that price) Do you mind if I ask what your L cost? I know you went w/ a diff PB than I will use but I'm curious to see if I can afford the L or T and if it's worth it to get that extra bit of shallow end. I will be using the pool mainly as a business; I teach private swim lessons as well as water aerobics and would love to have as much shallow end floor space as possible. My actual H2O depth will be 4' shallow and 8' (maybe even 9')deep for teaching start dives... I will lose a bunch of shallow end floor space due to the slope to 8-9' and thought I could make that up w/ an L or T shape. I know I could ask my PB but I've been bugging him constantly about other stuff and thought I'd ask you instead!

for my 18x37x26 i paid 21,500 + 1,000 for the hard bottom.i heard horror stories about people who did not opt for the hard bottom and the PB actually had to come out and go under and bang high spots down with a mallet.plus with the hard bottom we were able to swim much sooner (that according to the PB).by the way,im glad i didnt do the pation last year .because of all the snow and rain we have had there is a lot of settling.you have been quite busy with your project,and i hope things turn out well for you.

I forgot to ask a few more questions: did you use a solar cover last summer? If so or if you'll be getting one, did/will you actually need to buy 2 and overlap them to cover the entire surface? Why did you build an L and not a T shaped pool?
I finally got the insurance I needed to run the lessons in my yard so now I need to pass the perk/pit which is scheduled for next Tues (weather dependent). Once we pass (fingers crossed!) it's on to the A2 survey. I'll need a variance for the building but if that all gets approved I sign my life away to the bank for the loan and call my PB!

Thanks for the input. Kurt-Thank you. After I read that article about San Juan pools making coloured pools, I contacted our PB. He said that San Juan has stopped making the coloured pools due to fading from salt systems. He said that Leisure's warrantee on the gel coat says it does not fade, but since he has not personally seen a Leisure pool after 10 years, he can only go by what the manufacturer tells him. So we will probably be sticking with the light blue like you. Sharla-Your pool build pics look great. I will have to look into that pool cleaner. We currently have a Kreepy Krawly in our old pool and we find it does the trick with that, but maybe we should look into an upgade for the new pool. love2weed-I love the colour of your pool. It is so pretty. The water colour is so peaceful. We are hoping to achieve the same look with our concrete decking too. I wish our PBer did Viking. Thanks for sharing. Here is a link to the pool model we have chosen from mypoolspace.com It is the Manatee the size is 32'10'x14' with a deep end of 5'10' and a shallow of 3'6'. particularly if you stick with the U plan=all those cabs will be sandwiched together-you can get RTA flat packed sent to your door. Try Scherrs or Barkers-the latter can give you an online quote. these are good cabinets.Use graph paper and figure out what cabinets go where-plug it in and see what you get for the best you desire-drawers! Cheaper carcasses can be had from Ikea but the sizes are limited-can be done though-and you can get better doors from Scherr's. this is your starting point. Repurpose the glass doors[paint them??] on newer carcasses for the wall?? I would start with something like quartersawn oak with the factory furniture finish from Barkers for the base-it's a good finish-and maybe switch to a paint grade door for the uppers-you could easily have the uppers painted for you. or stick with the same quartersawn oak for the uppers-but just get a couple main dish cabs and leave some blank wall for open shelves. If this all comes in affordable-you could have the kitchen designer help do an island with detail because you've saved on the perimeter. If you liked that white kitchen-another way to price is paint grade on the perimeter and let the designer do a darker stained wood island and have that match the tall pantry etc over on the right. I don't think you realize how easy this all would be/why? bcause the configuration is straightforward-the walls are in-you are replacing. the redesign is only in your colors/finishes and adding the island. Put the thoughts on the look you desire-you can easily get the price to where you wish it to be.....you must be thorough in searching on the internet though and then access local hanydmen with paint/install/etc, if you folks are not super DIY'ers. Take that white kitchen expanded to the U shape with some sort of island in the foreground[not sure about sizes on that issue]...really pretty -and your floor is already in!

I've attached a rough sketch of the main floor of the house (not drawn to scale, but you can get an idea for the layout). Regarding the kitchen - the pantry (as shown on this sketch) is a mess and will be taken out to provide more space in the kitchen. This change is included in the designs I attached to my original post. And, as I mentioned before, the enclosed stairs to the attic and basement will be opened up. For the time being we'll install pull-down stairs in the hall in front of the 2 front bedrooms and bathroom. The basement stairs will be kept in place and refinished. For some info on how the space is used...We are a family of three, me, my husband and a 2yo. We're expecting a baby in Feb. We'd like to open the kitchen into the dining room for a more open feel in general, but also so we can see kids playing in the living room while we're cooking. There's currently no play area visible from the kitchen. We'll need a mudroom because we usually enter from the back of the house. We need all three bedrooms. We don't currently spend a lot of time in the dining room, but hoping this will change some with a more open plan. I realize the island in the kitchen will be a little tight to walk behind, but we've done the best we can with the plans there and we want some seating in the kitchen. Hope this drawing helps with ideas for my above-posted layout questions for the kitchen. Thanks!

I would not close off the current entrance. There have been many threads on this forum from people trying to figure out what to do with their corners. If you decide to go with the 'L', I would not angle anything in the corner, as it is a huge waste of space. I think that the 'L' also makes the kitchen look smaller than it really is with the tall items crowding the range. I like the entrance there as it allows the kitchen to breathe. Functionally, I think it makes more sense to 'zone' your kitchen and put food storage together on the shorter wall to the right of your entrance. I would flank the refrigerator with pantries or pullouts and place a MW drawer across the aisle on the short end of island. Although it sounds like a great idea to have the frig near the dining space, it is not necessary. I had that in my previous kitchen, and there was just too much going on in the same space with my cooktop. Snackers can then get to the refrigerator and MW without traipsing through your cooking zone. It's also less steps when putting groceries away. I would use a range and as many drawers as possible on the long wall for all of your cooking needs. By eliminating the refrigerator and double ovens you would have a very spacious look and a tremendous amount of storage and prep space. Dirty plates will be coming from your dining space, so I like the DW on that end of the island, with dish and cutlery storage either across from or next to the DW, making it easy for someone to set the table without getting in your way at the range. I would also extend the island and make it as long as the range wall.

my pb didnt offer a T,they had a bigger L but wasnt a true L,it was a grecian L where the corners are on a 45Â° angle.it was 6 feet bigger and a few grand more but i decided against it.the pool was put in 1st week of august,no solar cover but if i decide to get one it will be a rectangle with the flat area by the stairs.for the looploc it will be a custom cover where they will come out and measure.the warmest the water temp got up to was 74 degrees,yeah,it cooled you off on the hot 90+ degrees days but would have liked the water temp to be much warmer.my main concern about the pool was the maintence of it but it was much easier than i thought.plus,i always wanted to keep the pool clean so it was fun hooking up the robot vaccuum (forgot the name)and watching it work its magic.
