Several water problems-softener help needed

Hello,

I live in a suburb in NY state. I have a 1.5 bath home with 2 people residing. I have hard water (17 gpg last testing), .8 iron and 6.5 acidity.

One question is how bad is 6.5 acidity? Is it an amount that should be corrected with a water treatment system or not bad enough to be concerned?

Also, I had 2 companies in and one said to put my filter (which they suggested to be a Big Blue they sell) before the water softener while another said if I put one at all, it should be after the softener. Is one or the other the rule or does it depend on the softener I get as to where the filter should be placed?

Another confusion is about pricing...I've seen mention of prices on posts here of $500-$600 for a Fleck softener and yet the price I was quoted from both companies was $3,000! Are the units they suggested so much more expensive or are they charging me $2500 for installation?!? One was the Water Right ASC-1-1054 and the other the Culligan Medallist Series 8X44in.

Hopefully I've given enough information for answers to all these questions.

Thank you for your help.

John
