Finish line catastrophes?

I've lurked for months & have gotten so many fantastic tips here. I am finally at the finish line of a total redo of my small ranch but.... The other day I was about to paint the final 2 doors. I was thrilled to finally be at this point after a month of painting & agonizing-it was a beautiful breezy day. Ran to the garage to grab something-heard a thump thump thump sound-ran to see an entire new full gallon of white semi gloss paint pouring down my carpeted family room steps! So it now appears my thrill of the finish line is very much out of sight! Just wondered if others have gotten so far & so thrilled only to have a catastrophe ruin their vision?

Wow, that is pretty much a bummer. Was it new carpeting? Did you just rip it out or what? How does one go about cleaning up a gallon of paint spilled down a staircase. I bet it also splattered on the walls - oh my!!

I have to say I've never had such an ending to a home decorating/renovation project. I better go knock on wood right now. But, I'm sure there will be some good ones posted!

Sheila: You are probably the victim of the cherry fruit fly. Google this term and read all about it. This nasty insect has no respect for modern maturity, attacking older as well as young fruit growers. Spraying tart cherry trees for this insect is problematic, since tart cherries mature so early that chemical sprays have little time to break down before picking. And you can't scrub a cherry before pitting; about all you can do is a cold-water rinse. I am not a organic person by nature, but have found what I believe to be a successful cultural procedure to practically eliminate this insect. First, make sure you take all the cherries down from the tree and pick up those you can find on the ground, then discard them in the trash. If any of those fallen or falling cherries contain fruit fly larvae, they will burrow into the soil and pupate, ready to emerge for next season. You need to break this reproductive cycle. Second, and perhaps more important, hoe or otherwise cultivate beneath the tree to a depth of 3-4 inches at least out to the dripline several times during the winter. This will expose the pupae in the soil to cold, drying Nebraska winds, which will kill them. Cherry fruit flies usually hatch out right beneath the trees that they prey upon, and unless interrupted their numbers can build. The entry wound of the cherry fruit fly is very small, almost pinhead size. The larvae show up in the fruit without much warning, requiring close attention from the operator of the pitter. A little black frass around a pitted cherry is the signal to stop the pitting line and rinse the pitter. These larvae do not develop overnight; they were probably present in the first batch of cherries you pitted, but were too small for you to see. They are not toxic, of course, but it is better to be rid of them. I have been growing tart cherries for over 30 years in a climate that is heaven for this insect, but have pretty much eliminated them by the pickup/hoeing procedure. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

Drippy's right, plunk those babies back in, add some potting soil where needed, water them. How about the eye part of a hook and eye latch screwed into your wall, secure your plant stand with a piece of plastic cord or clothes line. I've got a couple of things held into place that were loosened here with those eye screws.... We had winds too. Heck with the plants house, I thought my own was going to blow away. The 100' tree laying on it may have been holding in down :) No front porch windows left and that was only wind, not the tree. I have a blown-loose sambucus tied to the front of my house with one of those eye screws, another holding a now tippy trellis steady until we can get to a more permanent fix. Those plants are tougher than you think :) If pieces of any of them broke by being dumped on their heads, it may be a good idea to remove anything jagged with sharp pruners so you don't run the risk of secondary damage by insects or disease. Good clean cuts heal faster.

Guess I haven't paid enough attention to ingredient lists on the candy I eat. And I'm still alive, too! LilySpider, gluten free products will be labeled as "Gluten Free" or "Certified Gluten Free" with GF in a circle between the wording. IIRC, the former is used when a specific product doesn't contain gluten in its many forms but is made in a factory that also processes products that contain gluten (chance of cross-contamination). That info will usually be included at the end of the ingredient list (chance of cross-contamination). The latter is made without any gluten-containing ingredient and in a factory that does not process products that contain wheat, etc. I can handle minor cases of cross contamination; people with Celiac Disease can not do so without becoming ill. When I started eating a GF diet, I had to learn the secret code to figure out what ingredient might contain gluten. "Food starch" could be corn starch or wheat starch; no way to know so I avoided both. Malt is often used in chocolate; malt contains gluten. Labeling has gotten much better in the few years since I went GF so it's not quite as difficult to tell when an item is a no-no for me. btw, I just read a fascinating article on NPR about the discovery of a protein that affects how we process gluten. Sadly, I've done this same cleaning drill with my sofa for cat pee. I had one cushion she hit hard. I washed all the covers and air dried, like you did. Soaked the cushion with natures miracle and let dry for a week or two so the enzymes could work. Then it still smelled a bit to me, so I put the cushion in the bathtub with water and walked on it, no soap. Brownish water came out, it was really disgusting. I repeated with fresh water a few more times. Drained and walked on it again to try to get the water out, then left it in the tub a few days to dry (it is very hard to get all the water out) then sat it outside for a week. After that, it didn't smell at all and it all went back together without any issues. I think you've done all the right steps so far, and if it still smells try rinsing in the bathtub. Good luck!

Major bummer! sorry to hear that. I did learn that painting the inside of a metal door to the outide when its really cold out will make the paint run like crazy, hours after you walk away thinking it looks fine.still there. not even close I know. My neighbor spilled a whole gallon of white paint out the 2nd floor window down the outside of their red brick house on a hot day- so some is still there. at least it was on the side not down the front!

My son-bless his heart-got most up. Hours of cleaning etc.. but it is a homeowners claim. The carpet will be 2 years old in November.I just saw my luggage has paint all over it as well where it ran thru the stairwell. I have many things stored under there & after working a15 hour day yesterday & a 9 today-I am in no mood to see what else was ruined. I assume an adjustor will be out soon to see it. UGH!! Trust me -you just stand there & stare at it in utter frozen disbelief!

I am ever so sorry to hear that, I can't even in my wildest imagination think of having to clean up a mess like that. I think cleaning up spilled paint on a floor would be bad enough but not bouncing down stairs. Hopefully your insurance will cover a lot of the clean-up for you. So Sorry!

WOW! Sorry to hear that happened!

I once worked as a claims adjuster for AAA. I had a claim where the CA home owner had VERY high ceilings, 35', a worker on a ladder leaned over too far, falling to his death(as I recall he was impaled on something). It could have been worse....see. Take care and I'm really sorry to hear this happened.

Knock on wood, nothing like that has ever happened to me, but, oh, so many close calls with feet and buckets of paint.

OH MY! Wow, I'm so sorry.

My best friend's parents have a white brick home. Their grandson (my friends nephew) decided to paint bright green ALL over the side (that you can see from the road.) IMO, what makes it worse is he was way old enought know better. I believe most of it's still there.

My deductable is $250.00 luckily. The adjustor will be out Wednesday. Now to dig all the stuff our from under the steps that the paint ran onto. So far I can see my luggage is ruined-haven't had the heart ( read guts)to look further as all of my holiday decor are under there. Unreal really! I guess it could of been worse ....at least it's covered by insurance.

OH, believe me, I feel for you. At least you didn't personally drop it, you can console yourself with that (I can't...).

nicole, that story is *horrendous*. I can't even imagine being the homeowner (much less the widow :( ). Like the "I was sad I had no shoes until I saw someone who had no feet" except even WORSE.

oh goodness that is a horror story!

I have some during our home reno, but luckily it doesn't involve paint.

Some of our problems we ran into (we Started in Dec with Kitchen/powder room)

While laying tile our downstairs heating unit went out in Dec. (Can't lay tile when it's freezing!)

So that was an extra 1200 bucks to have everything fixed, but we did get new digital thermostats tho!

Then....we start laying tile and our well pump goes out on Dec 23rd no doubt! (we live in the country!)

That was another 600 bucks...

Then we finish the tile, get the kitchen semi-finished to move our appliances back in, and while moving our fridge with a new ratchet strap, it caught some wind the strap slipped, fridge tipped and landed on top of the stove! (Both stainless and relatively new, put a ding in the fridge and a dent on the edge of the stove, plus messed up the control panel...and it's on back order til June, so now I can only cook on stove and cannot use my oven!)

Then....our outside breaker box gets a surge from the power company and it blew and OF COURSE it's some weird size that we had to special order, so we had NO lights in 4 rooms downstairs for about 2 weeks! And I didn't have countertops either because it took 5 weeks for the granite installers, read HOME DEPOT, to actually finish and come out and install after hasseling them.

Image, no downstairs power, no downstairs heat, NO WATER, no countertops, no oven for a few weeks...it was hell!

Did I mention the new well pump went out again during the no power?? It was faulty so we had to get another new one!

Now we're finally near the end, polying the hardwood floors this week and painting...

Let's HOPE, read HOPE-my clumsy self doesn't spill an entire gallon on the newly sanded floors! I do have them covered with drop clothes, taped against where the base boards go...but you never know!

Good luck on your paint catastrophe..we've all been there...and some of us still are!
