What happened to the female eagle in Va.

People are removing the nest. On the forum someone said the female is missing. Does anyone here know?

So sad - here is the e-mail I received
the mother eagle in Norfolk Virginia was killed yesterday morning (Tuesday) by a plane. My heart is broken.....I follow the Iowa eagles on FB, and there's a discussion there about it.....So Very Sad! They plan to move the 3 eaglets to a wildlife sanctuary this morning, so they can make sure they are fed enough since they will triple in size & dad just won't be able to handle it alone.....I know it's the circle of life, but this is so hard to understand......They obviously know what they are doing and have knowledge that made them decide this. I guess if they don't get enough food, they could hurt the smallest eaglet for food......

OMG! My 3rd grade Grandson and his class have been watching this even non-stop - they will be devastated. He and I watched them all last weekend - I am so sad!

Just a few tidbits to enhance your viewing pleasure. The eagle you see on the nest feeding the young can be either the female or the male, as they both take turns raising the eaglets. See if you are able to notice that one parent is notably larger than the other. That would be the female. Female eagles can weigh 10 to 12 pounds, while males are usually in the 6 to 8 pound range. Surprisingly light for such large birds, eh? (Females can have an 8 foot wingspan, and males about 6 foot.) Eagles nest in the winter (hence the nice show going on right now), and the young have often fledged by February. Young eagles take several years to develop the white head and tail of the adult birds. They are usually either solid brown, or brown with various white markings here and there as they are maturing. They have longer wing & tail feathers than the adults, so they often look larger. When you see a turkey vulture silhouette soaring towards you, you will notice a shallow "V" shape to the wings. (Called the "dihedral" angle). When you see an eagle soaring towards you, the wings will be held straight out & flat, with no dihedral angle. So it is often easy to distinguish that the large soaring bird in the distance is probably a turkey vulture rather than an eagle. A huge percentage of an eagle's diet is fish, which is why they so often nest near bodies of water. They will catch fish in their talons the same way an osprey does, but will also steal fish from other birds any chance they get. Why do all the work when another bird has done it for you? Hello Elly, They had updates in the newspaper for a couple of weeks but I haven't seen any thing lately. For the first week or so George was sitting on the nest and they thought there might be some babies in the next, but George eventually abandoned the nest. Last I heard Martha was doing pretty well and they were hoping to be able to release her. The person in charge of mitigating the impact on wildlife for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project attends the local raptors meeting I go to, so I expect to get an update at the end of June when we have the next meeting. Hi, I'm hoping someone may know why all of a sudden "our eagle" is flying up and down the river and crying constantly!! We live in very south New Jersey on what used to be a lake now just a creek type river. We always saw two eagles, male and female perhaps maybe one to three times a month. Now for at least 4 days (we were away so could be longer) what we think is the male presenting this behavior. We are praying that nothing has happened to "Sylvia" and he's looking for her?? Sharon, I don't think they've hatched yet. Right next to the cam is a box that has the dates they laid them and updates. I think they'll post when they hatch. They did on this other eagle cam I'm watching. Two out of three eggs have hatched on that one and there is alot of activity today. The male keeps coming to switch and the female isn't giving it up. LOL.. maybe last one is about to hatch. This is a California nest. The Ca site says the eggs take about 35 days to hatch so the Virginia one might be a bit more before they hatch. I went to check on the eaglets about a hour ago and the nest was empty, so I started reading the moderator's and people's comments. Mama was killed by a plane at the nearby airport with a fish in her mouth for the babies. They decided to rescue the babies, because it would be too hard for daddy to feed them as they grow larger and watch over them too. He has been circling the nest and brought a fish to the empty nest. I can't stop crying, I've watched this pair for the last 5 years. Her previous mate was killed by a plane also. Just breaks my heart...

Oh my...I am crying as I read this, I have watched them and encouraged people to for so many years. This is just so incredibly sad. I know the babies will all do well but I hope the male will also do alright now that he is on his own. I can't imagine what he must be thinking right now. This really is such a sad time...this site has given so much education to so many people.

Me too..I just am fighting back the tears. I went to the site and the male was standing in the nest looking so bewildered. My heart is breaking....I get so wrapped up in these live cams.

I think it was three years ago that the Cascade eagle eggs didn't hatch. The last frame was of the female, saying a good-bye. Just too touching for words.

That is so sad, they are just magnificent birds. we have a lot of them on our lake, but have never seen a nest.

Weve been seeing quite a few in our yard,my son said last Sat.there were 2 one larger than the other,in our field eating something.
Thats so sad.
