I put my dog down - it was so peaceful

I made the awful decision to have my dog put down today . She's a cocker/bichon mix & was 17 and a half years old !

Watching her have so many problems in the last month - I knew in my heart it was time.

The last dog I had to put down was my Golden ... She got "the shot" & I thought she was going to jump off of the table -- it looked like it hurt her so bad. I've had nightmares about it . I've since read that's a reaction of the body to the heart stopping - not pain ... But it killed me to watch that.

This is a new vet I've never seen before . I was so impressed at how respectful she was of me & how peaceful she made the whole process.

She did the whole procedure slowly and calmly ...and explained every step of the way what is going to happen. Finally , Anna just relaxed in my arms for the last time. ( No jerking or twitching )

All went well ..... I hope your babies are up there waiting to play with a fiesty little girl . ((Anna))

awww, i'm so very sorry for your loss. i've been in your shoes and this is such a heart wrenching decision to have to make but one made from love.

i'm so glad it was peaceful for both you and anna. i know a couple of corgis who are probably jumping for joy at having a new playmate. ;)

Thank-you both Duane and Sherie for your thoughts and support. You don't know how much your comments mean to me during this extremely tough time. Saying good-bye to my best friend was the hardest thing that I ever had to do. When I said my final good-bye to him I thanked him for being such a great dog, for making me laugh and always cheering me up when I was down. I told him I didn't ever want to say good-bye to him, how much I loved him and how much he meant to me. I then told him that he would always be with me. He was so sick yet he still pull his last bit of energy together to lick the tears that were rolling down my face for the last time, I then had to walk away. I can't help continually listening for his bark, and my body keeps telling me to go check on him. I miss him so much, my home seems so empty without him. I know time will heal my broken heart but it is so hard right now. I miss petting his silky velvet ears, and seeing his happy face when I got close to him. I really don't know what I will do without him, but I know all he ever wanted for me is my happiness and this gives me the strength to get up in the morning. I love you Bruiser my pup.

Thank you all for your kind words. It really does help to know there are caring people here. I keep telling myself, that as Lu said, he probably would not have survived this long if not for us. He has had numerous health problems in the last 1 1/2 years - another small tumor removed from his penis, several teeth removed and his left eye removed in June. Yes, he is really a pitiful site now. I just remember how beautiful a dog he was before. And how beautiful a dog he is inside!! He is truely the sweetest dog I have ever owned. After being worked so hard for years, by the time we got him, all he really wanted was a warm bed, food and an abundance of chewies. He never like toys or balls or really running around with our other dog. I think he just wanted love. He sure got that with us. He will be missed. I am spoiling him in his last couple of days - no more hard dog food. Right now I have a crock pot of round steak cooking for his meals tomorrow!

Thanks for your replies everyone. That is great that you got to have Casey around for over 2 years, Nancy. Tso has truly been a family pet. When Tso was about 10 months old, he was given to my oldest son by a friend. She gave him to my son because his original owners were being mean to him. I think they just did not know how to deal with a Shar pei. They do tend to have attitudes, but to us that is part of the appeal. Then in 2006, my oldest son moved to Thailand. So my youngest son took his apartment and General Tso. When both boys lived with Tso we would watch him when they would go out of town. In August of 2007, Tso came to stay with us while my son went away for a weekend and basically never left, (my idea) lol. When we first took him to our current vet, I told him this story. He said at least you claim him. Some people still refer to them as their son or daughter's pet. I told him, I claim him, pay for him & am the one who mostly takes care of him but if he could speak he would tell you that he belongs to my daughter & she is the queen in his world, lol. So when the time comes he will be missed greatly by everyone. My son is already telling me I will have to get another puppy so that Smokey (our other dog, 5yrs) will have company. I am not so sure about that, but you never know. He is really doing very well this week. He is drinking just fine but isn't too interested in the dry food. The last time he had an ear infection he did the same thing. My thinking is that it hurts his ears to crunch the dry food. So I am putting some dry food in the bowl with a little bit of water to soften it. Then I add some canned food to that. He really likes it and gobbles it down. I am just keeping an eye on him and will do what I can to make him comfortable if he has a bad day. I will keep everyone posted on any changes. Once again, thank you.

No Sylvia, I am not the OP .... I'm just one of many who offered my own opinion and heartfelt experience - FWIW. I trust OP and other readers will be grappling with the input and various perspectives here.... as well as their own emotions and past experiences around death.... and in the end it'll be what it is, some combination of grief, relief, regret,and love.... My own experience/knowledge is that "good" deaths are indeed possible - one of my dear kitties died of feline leukemia and got progressively weaker/more frail but purred / recognized and wanted me present til the very end....her last few minutes she became a bit agitated and then she passed... it was simply like a wave going through her and her spirit left.... More recently though.... my old calico faced a death that would have been highly traumatic for both her and me and according to my vet could have quite likely involved many minutes, evem hours of her struggling to breathe.... so that led to a different outcome and a rather agonizing decision to euthanize.... Those two experiences informed my view that I dont think one size fits all and that a good talk with a vet who knows you and your animal well is the best tool for making a decision. Honestly, Syvlia - if I was to choose between one of those two ways of death for myself I would choose the first one - to pass naturally and peacefully - I would so HATE to put anyone through the agony of having to decide what to do .... But alas.... peaceful deaths are not always possible... maybe even a rarity, I dunno..... I do recognize that! I apologize if my words came across as insulting - that was not my intention.

My heart goes out to you over the loss of your furbaby. I too know how heartbreaking it is when the time comes for them to go to the Rainbow Bridge. You have many years of memories to cherish.

You did the right thing. She had a wonderful 17 1/2 years with you and you made the final decision to end her problems. It's always sad to do but necessary.

My eyes are leaking.....I'm so sorry about Anna. I know that is a long life and you were both lucky to have each other all of that time. But the longer you have each other the closer the bond...and it always hurts. My Lab passed on Oct.11 and I've cried every day. I just miss my Duke. Hugs to you and may all of your memories be happy ones.

Oh, dear!! I am so sorry. I have 2 10 year old bichon sisters. the one us battling a terrible skin condition and I am worried sick. Going to vet tomorrow.
Know that your beloved friend is waiting for you on the other side of the Bridge. Best of luck.

Thanks for your kind words . Your thoughts touched my heart deeply . I'll be crying for quite a while. My eyes are so swollen - they hurt.

A neighbor had bought her for his wife for a birthday gift . She came down with Parvo --- yet survived ,but they just didn't want to take care of her anymore. They gave her to a different neighbor - that neighbor decided she didn't want her so I took her. That's why I named her "Annie" ( Anna)
little orphan Annie. And that's her story !

She had a great life. All my dogs lived long -
Bootsie - 12 (small terrier mix )
Bucky - 13 ( collie/lab)
Lady - 13 ( Golden )
Ellie -13 ( Rottie )
Anna - 17 (cocker/bichon)
and I had a cat -lived to 20 .( free from a rummage sale )

Sorry for babbling ... I just need to keep reminding myself that all my dogs had a nice long lives .

With a wonderful record like that, your animals are very lucky to have found you. So sorry for your loss. It does take awhile to get past the sadness and just have fond memories. Take it easy.
