trying to post a pic , ID type of cabinet please

white kitchen not sure how old. front and back slippery glossy smooth. we are picking new cabinets and cant decide on "material" for doors

sorry I wasn't clear. is this a lacquer + mdf door ? or thermofoil + mdf ? melamine ? we are shopping for new cabinets . I'd like to see if companies still make whatever this is because the shiny surface is nice. white kitchen cabinets have yellowed a bit but still the original owner picked these over 20 years ago and it's held up well. (I am not considering hardwood at all.) I hope someone can let me know what these are so I know whatever it is will last me another 25 yrs :)

Could be a fungus like Vladimir said, could also be an insect egg or just dirt on a bit of fluff. However, I'm more concerned with how dusty the leaves are. I may just be dust or it could be the beginnings of a spider mite infestation. It's a good idea to wash off the leaves from time to time, like maybe every 4-6 weeks. Take them outside and hose them off, or if that's not possible, put them in the shower and shower them off with cool water. Then let them drain well and put them back where they were. It helps prevent spider mites as they're attracted to dusty plants. And your plants love the rinsing off!

The fact that you want the wall to look as if it is all cabinets tells me that you want "full integrated", not built-in. Subzero makes semi integrated look with their built in but you see the door slightly and the grill cover above the frig. The best place to look at the options is the Subzero web site. They show you how the integrated and built ins look. One of the big difference is where the air intake grill is. The built ins are at the top which are often covered with panels. The integrated frigs have the grills at the bottom behind the door with a small gap that lets the air flow around it. When the door is closed, you see nothing. The frig is designed so that the bottom of the door is at the same level as all the other cabinets next to it with the toe kick where you should see the standard toe kick. If you think about it, it makes sense that the gill cover at the top is what gives it away. There is nothing else that can be up there (above 7ft) except the grill cover for the frig and it is a dead give away that it is a frig. Either you don't care or you do. The Liebherr has the toe kick vent so there are air vents cut into the grill, which makes it a not a "true integrated" Small difference but these things make a difference in the look AND if you know what to look for, it jumps out at you. Mieles and Boschs are integrated, not built-ins. The do not make a line where the grill cover is at the top. Thermador makes built-in line and integrated line. Subzero makes both also. There are people that want the look of the SZ built-in so that it "showcases" that there is a SZ there. (This probably helps with resale more than the integrated since more people know what SZ is but not what it takes to do the full integration.) There are people that go the extra mile to make sure that it is fully integrated. Do the research and see what you want. Good luck.

Pretty much the same thing as cindyxeus said but with photobucket all you have to do is: When you are done uploading your pic, there will be 3 address's under the pic, find the one that says "HTML". We were lucky to find good cabinet makers to work with, and we're also fortunate to have 9 foot ceilings to reach up to. Makes the 'small' by modern standards 10x15 foot kitchen feel a lot larger. Because we don't have any really long runs of cabinets, the frameless construction is less impactful, and frankly having framed inset doors would have probably looked too busy in this small space. The thick 1.5" gables on the sides of the fridge and dishwasher are nice touches as well and help frame in the frameless doors.

I removed the hardware and it looks mdf but what is the top white finish ? lacquer ? thermofoil ? melamine ? it doesnt feel or look like oil paint.

If you take some sandpaper to it, what happens? Paint can be sanded off.

The inset area of your second pic looks like it is paint but the overall appearance makes me think thermofoil.

I wish I had an answer for you but instead a commiseration. Two homes back (now a rental) had cabs original to the 1947 home. They and the ceiling had that same...shellac-paint finish on them and that stuff is TOUGH. So I know what you have.....I just don't know what it IS. Lol?

Can't tell from the pictures.

If there is a seam on the back edge of the door-where the sides of the door meet the back- then you have a foil or acrylic of some type.

IF there is no seam then they are a gloss film finish. That could be lacquer, polyester, hi gloss varnish or other, exactly which depends on the maker. Overall durability will also depend on the maker more than the specific finish used, each will offer reasons why x is better than y.

I'd suggest investigating from scratch- that is see what is available to you in hi gloss finishes in your area an evaluating them. A lot of developments (especially in hi gloss) in the last 20 years.

thermofoil can easily be peeled off. The hinge hole picture suggests that those cabinets are painted. Possibly painted MDF. The finish looks like the Ikea Lidingo doors which are "acrylic" or "polyester" paint . However those are not Lidingo doors since the vertical stile does not go to the edge. Also, the routed edges are not that sharp which also favors MDF.

In any case if you like the shiny smooth hardwearing surface , thermofoil or lacquer fits that bill. There is a poster in Newfoundland who had a gorgeous period kitchen done in thermofoiled doors, I can't remember who it was. It seems that gardenwebbers favor a more matte surface which is why we don't see many of those kitchens here.
