Do you have Banana Slugs in your area?

I never saw any till I moved to CA. They are sure weird looking and BIG! Here is one I saw out front. Notice the brick for size reference.

No, never saw anything like that, but I bet if we did, they wouldn't last long....the possums would love them.

They were shredding mine so badly in the early spring that I thought I would never have plants this summer. I went to the pet store and bought the spray that you spray onto furniture to keep dogs from chewing it. There are several different brands, I used the one called "Bitter Apple". It works very well, but you have to reapply it after rain. It did not hurt my plants. I put it on bananas, alocasias, anything they chewed or I thought they were going to chew, LOL. It also worked against rabbits.

I like mine a little green. Once they start getting brown I don't want them unless they are in Banana Bread, Banana Pudding or something like that. I also like frozen bananas. They taste more like a dessert than just a piece of fruit. 4 y/o DGD Erica had seen the commercials for the Debbie Meyer Green Bags and could tell you all about them. One day DD had some bananas that had turned brown but she planned to make Banana Bread. Erica said "Mommy, if you would use the Green Bags your bananas wouldn't look like that." Instacart is the same company that Kroger uses. I think also perhaps Vitacost does too, because I have noticed that they carry the same products (Simple Truth, for example, which I thought was a Kroger exclusive brand) at the same price. I was about to mention that Aldi is starting home delivery -- that is in addition to our other major chains (Kroger, Meijer, Big Bear, Target, Walmart). Several of those also have curbside pickup. My daughter used the Meijer home delivery regularly and has been very pleased. She tells me that the shopper will contact her to approve a substitution if possible, and she has also gotten some good sale prices that weren't available in store (a bargain price for lamb, and low price for strawberries, for examples) I've used the curbside pickup at Kroger twice, because it was free and they had coupon offers for using it that I wanted to take advantage of. It is not something that I will pay $5 to use. Only problems -- I try to use digital coupons and promotions for my purchases whenever possible, and both times I've ordered, they substituted items that didn't qualify for the promotion or coupon. The first time they were sold out of a 2# package and substituted two 12 oz. packages instead, for the same (regular) price as 2#, plus I lost the sale price and coupon for the larger package. The order picker did not know that a pound = 16 ounces. This they made right. The second time I was buying items for a "buy 5 save $5" promotion, and forgot to specify to only substitute with a qualifying item -- so when the particular "flavor" of laundry detergent I had picked was sold out in the promotion size, they substituted the same "flavor" in a larger size --again I lost the value of the promotion ($5) and also a $3 coupon. Lesson learned -- I need be very specific in the comments about what substitutions are acceptable.

I've only seen them on your side of the hill Clare. They are only found in coniferous coastal areas I believe.

When the kids were little and in Indian Guides/Princesses they had to kiss/lick a banana slug as part of their "initiation" on their first Y campout. LOL

My dog gave it a sniff, not even a lick, and passed on it. And she will eat anything.

wildchild - I don't think I would want to join if I had to do that. Yuck!

They are very prevlant in the Redwoods, but usually hidden. I hate them and my grandkids think it is a funny joke to find things representing them to send to me. Did you know there is even a jam called Banana Slug Jam. Mad River Company makes it. A local company makes it all Berries, no slugs. UGH

Saw plenty of them when I lived in your neck of the woods- now the only ones are on my t-shirts from UC Santa Cruz! I get lots of comments on them down here in the south!

We're just about 25 miles south of you, and we don't have them here, but I know them well from time spent near Santa Cruz and Boulder creek in the past. Are they found outside California, like in Oregon or Washington?

Yes, for all you easterners, as trishaw indicated, the banana slug is the mascot for UC Santa Cruz. But I had never seen one before. Ugly, prehistoric looking things.

I grew up in Northern CA. As a kid whenever we went up to the mountains I made sure we had a bunch of Chiquita Bananas with us. When I found a banana slug, I'd put a Chiquita sticker on its back. Wouldn't take too long for them to slide right out from under the sticker as they moved.

We also have them up here on Vancouver Island ~ but we have a whole whack of them, from little beige/pink ones, to regular black/brown ones, and then the big yellow banana ones.

Euwwwwww to slimey slugs who leave a trail of gooooo.

I love banana slugs! I saw them for the first time in Portland, OR at the rose test gardens....I was about ten.
When we used to go camping near Santa Cruz, the kids discovered banana slugs and loved them as much as I did as a kid.
I am just glad they are not in my garden.
