Are you saying my bathroom tile layout is a shame? As I said, the house is 120 years old. Many major corrections were made for things being out of square, level and plumb but at certain places it just wasn't possible because wall thicknesses for windows and doors had to be maintained. That wall is the back wall behind the toilet. Here is another shot. Please, tell me how this would drive you nuts, unless you spend a hell of a lot more time bowing before the porcelain god than I do. That's pretty much the worst spot in the entire bathroom. A slightly less bad spot (out of square by a quarter inch across 6'6") will be behind the freestanding tub. Everything else is really remarkably square given the age of the house and what we started with. Sorry for the slight distortion, it was taken with a wide angle lens. The three sides that you can actually see without being on your knees with your head in the bowl are perfect. Tile guy has now come back and spent a couple of days meticulously cutting individual tiles to fill in around the edges of the room. I don't have an updated picture as the majority of the floor is under paper and it hasn't been worth it the time to take new pictures. The first pic posted was taken before grout. I used mapei warm grey on the floor as well - I prefer the more subtle outline of the pattern. Maybe before you insult someone else's bathroom you should take the time to understand what you're looking at.

Thanks, Bill, but I am the one who posted that link! I got the pencil liner for the top of my layout from them for the amazing price of $6.99 per linear foot! I couldn't believe my luck. Regarding the my accent piece, thanks for the reassurance. I want to be sure I understand what you're meaning, though. Are you saying the piece above and below the accent strip will be angled out slightly so as to line up with the accent piece? So the piece below would be flush with the subways below it on the bottom edge, and have extra mortar behind it on the top edge so it is flush with the accent? As always, thanks! Anita

Yes, my ceilings are 8 feet. I would have to leave off the glass part at the top. We are opeing up the wall which is where the penninsula will be, then a few feet out from the penninsula my ceilings raise to 16 feet in the living room with 2 skylights in the celing and lots of natural light. I really thought this would prevent the darks wood from becoming to heavy, also combining it with the lighter elemtns it helps brighten things up. I do want to put in handscraped hickory hardwood floors. This would be throughout the kitchen, dining room, and living room. I like the tile but I want the flow of having the floors all the same. I knew there would be people who don't like this kitchen. It's definitely not for eveyone, and I respect that. It makes a very strong statement. You can correct me on the eclectic if you like. I call that mixing the different elements, details, finishes, and embellishments. I do agree it's tuscan, antique looking. I am worried about using it in "my smaller space" That is why I posted here to get ideas. I appreciate all suggestions and all thoughts negative or positive. I do think not having enough space is a huge concern. One reason I thought this style would work is because we are opening this space up and removing a wall. Our living room is large. There are only two of us living here. Empty nesters. I can't see the expense of expanding. Not in this econmic climate and the area I live in. I was hoping by opening up the space it would give us a nice entertaining area. It is a load bearing wall so a support column is needed at the end of the penninsula. For this reason I really can't have an island. I am limited, I do have to be realistic. That's not always easy!

Lynn-I so love my bathroom and closet. To top it off it all has heated floors. My thoughts were-get out of hot shower on warm tile, who wants to walk on cold tile to get dressed?? Not ME!! My builder questioned me. I've had it on for about a week now that it got cold. Yes, I thought correctly!! As for no carpet in closet: For those of you who don't remember...I don't have a any carpet in this house. The whole downstairs is tile and the whole upstairs in wood except tile in baths. Sure I have area rugs but not wall to wall carpet.(Lesson learned- we put white carpet in the house we built 10 years ago-I learned very quickly to HATE carpet!!) 2 now teenagers, 2 dogs and 1 cat.

Didn't realize it was that time or year. Gotta love the samoas. I remember selling the thin mints 50 years ago when I was a Girl Scout. Thanks for the memories your post with pics brought up!!

That makes THAT decision easy! Aren't you the one who let your kids write all over the walls? I'm glad I don't let my kids read GW -- they'd be begging for much different decisions than I'm making if they saw your threads!

Well, I'm glad YOU like it but, for resale, you really should have gone with something more neutral...like Saltine Crackers. If you HAD to do cookies at all, chocolate chip would have been your safest bet.

sigh But, of course, it is YOUR house. sigh

I don't know, Sandy. There are lots of chocolate allergies out there, and you really have to think about resale.

For cleanability, I do suggest sealing your backsplash. Maybe Karo syrup??

It's perfect! Solves all my indecision and if I decide I don't like it, my DH can eat it all with the kids and I get to pick another backsplash!

As a former cookie manager (2 girls as scouts for ten years)I was tempted to build a "cinder block" house with the cookie cases sometimes. Our house would smell like cookies for a month but no one ever complained. Gotta go now to track down some of those dulce de leche---must be new.
