They may seem strange to you, but certainly just part of everyday life for people my age who remember when there were no paper towels and you did hang your wet kitchen linens on a bar attached to the inside sink cabinet's door, hidden from view. You also sometimes stored your mop buckets under there along and yes......maybe even your spuds and onions, damp cleaning brushes, your dish racks and drainers because most people didn't have dishwashers. It was a 'wet' environment. Like said by another poster, often the vents were just slots in the wood in the really older wooden cabinets. No........it didn't mean you had a 'problem' is was just the way is was then Brickeye. I assumed you were old enough to remember stuff like that but you must not be. You often even found vented doors in the metal kitchen cabinets popular in the forties...but not a separate vent like that. It may have even been retrofitted and not original with the cabinetry you had.....by then, judging from the style the vents were disappearing because there was the expectation of tightness in homes. I told you it wasn't 'decoration' it was for aeration and it is for aeration and had a purpose.

Here is my dilemma. Maybe someone can help. We are installing a stainless sink in the corner. Because it has to fit, they recommended a 25" x 22" sink and no larger. You cannot find undermount sinks in that particular size. Everything either jumps to a 30" or goes down to a much smaller size unless of course someone can help. I preferred NOT to go off center with the faucet but I might have to if I want the sink at those preferred dimensions because you can get a D shaped sink closer to those dimensions. Any more thoughts about off center faucets? I am very symmetrical and the focal point will be the corner and an off center faucet bothers me. Thanks!

Beautiful rug, justgotabme! I really like that design. Pip's a big boy (around 18 lbs. worth of goober-cat), and we have enormous boxes. The one he pooped outside of today is definitely big enough to accommodate him (he DOES pee in there), and we also have a large, shallow plastic tote - the under-bed storage kind - that we've repurposed as a kitty potty. Putting a plastic runner under/in front of the box he pooped outside of today is an excellent idea. I was going to get a litter-trapping mat (have one of those upstairs and it works well), but a piece of plastic is a better idea given our special circumstances. Did I mention - Ugh, cats?

I would not spend the money on new counters when you have a dishwasher that cannot be opened while at the sink, or if it is opened, you are trapped by the door. Whenever there is a corner sink, there must be an adjacent cabinet between the sink and the dishwasher. Typically it’s a pull-out trash cabinet. A cabinet between corner sink and dishwasher allows the dishwasher door to open and not trap the person at the sink. It is not a good use of your money to spend it on new counters with that layout. Plus, what is wrong with your current counters?
