tubing for instant hot water

We installed an insinkerator instant hot tank and faucet last week, but due to the depth of the sink, the tubing that was included wasn't long enough. Dh called Insinkerator and they said they could not send a longer length of tubing because it would not work properly.

It seems to be working just fine with the tubing dh used, but our concern is that it is not the same type tubing and isn't made for such hot water.

My question is: what type of tubing is suitable as far as handling the pressure and temperature of the water, and where is the best place to purchase it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PTFE (Teflon) tubing is acceptable for high temperature. If you can't find it at a plumbing supply, you may want to try lab supply. For the two cold water lines, standard crosslinked polyethylene will work - it is available at Home Depot or any plumbing supply.

PTFE tubing is not code approved for potable water service.

Any line that is code approved for potable water distribution is capable of handling temperatures well above the code maximum of 125 degF

The greater concern here is the manufacturers warning that extending the lines may create problems with the function of the unit. Keep in mind that if you install the unit contrary to manufacturers recommendations it will most likely void your warranty and if the event of catastrophic failure it could negate your insurance.

I am not clear on your set up. What are you not telling us? I do not understand what Ã¢ÂÂtank 134.6 hP 111Ã¢ÂÂ means. Where is the blue pipe connected to & what temperature is the blue pipe water? It seems to me that for this to operate properly, especially with a mixing valve, that you may need a buffer tank between the solar collector and the active tank. Can you possibly supply us with a detailed schematic including temperatures & flow chart? SR

Mine is a Little Gourmet by Mountain Plumbing. I love it, but somewhere in the 3rd year, we had to cut off the end of the rubbery tube that delivers the very hot water to the tap. The combination of very hot water (we keep it turned all the way or nearly all the way up), tube stretched over the connection and then the little wiggle caused by water pressure on and off eventually caused a leak right at the connection (sudden drop in water pressure at the tap). We had enough line that we cut it off and reconnected (2 minute fix), but I plan to go look for a stainless or other line that will hold up better for the long haul. Kind of like the installers suggest changing to a stainless supply line on your washer and dryer. If I had known that going into the installation, I'd have had no issues with it at all. Knowing it now, I'd still get the same unit -- just look for a better hot water line to install it with or replace after a year or two.

Had ISE insta hot and went through 3 tanks at about 2 1/2 year intervals. When they leak it can cause major damage, so your idea of a pan makes sense. Ours leaked from the bottom of the tank so a pan would have to cover the entire base. Switched to a Wasteking which was significantly cheaper and had slightly better longevity reviews on Amazon (also switched to Wasteking disposal from ISE). We're about a year into the insta hot with about 6 months of daily use and no problems, but my ISEs also lasted that long before failing, so it's too early to tell. If they weren't so useful and had an inline filter I wouldn't have one. We reached a point where when traveling we cut the water and power off to the unit.

No, it's not a joke. Ionized water is a thing - using an electric current to break apart some water molecules into positive and negative ions. Although it happens naturally at a very low rate, the process increases the amount of ions. Now whether it results in health benefits by consuming ionized water - that's a different story. I personally don't believe in it, but that's me.

Sorry - didn't realize the code issue. However, be aware that we are not talking about 125 deg water here - we're talking about an instant-hot that produces water up to 204 deg. Standard water tubing is only rated up to 180.

We have one of these dispensers at our sink. There are several types of tubing generally used on these hot water units. The way these units work is that when you press the lever for hot water, cold water is sent to the heating tank which then pushes hot water up and out the spout.

The supply to the lever valve assembly is high pressure cold water. Polyethylene tubing will work here. Generally the connections are push-in with internal o-ring seals.

From the lever valve to the tank is cold water at lower pressure. Polyethylene tubing will work fine here as well. Also push-in connections are typical.

From the tank to the spout is what appears to be a silicone tubing with some external clamps. This can handle the near-boiling temps and is typically not found available in most hardware or box stores. In fact, I've never seen it sold at retail. Polyethylene tubing is NOT recommended here at these high temps, but it may survive for a time because of the very low pressure. Splicing copper tubing into the middle of the silicone tubing would be an acceptable way to extend the length. You could possible extend the copper tubing on the faucet itself with copper tubing and a female-female compression connector. Another way to extend it would be to salvage some silicone tubing from an old drip coffee maker - due to the heat it is used to connect to the heating element and to carry the hot water up to the coffee basket.

I tried this. And no extending did not work. It leaks. I believe because of the temperature difference creating some sort of expanding and shrinking between the two types of material.

The replacement hose is Santoprene TPE/TPV 73A FDA Tubing.
