Rebar sizing and spacing

We are building a 50'(L) x 8.5'(W) x 5'(D) gunite lap pool. One side is buttressed by a building; on the other side the PB has built a very basic concrete block wall. He tells us that this wall is only to act as a form (and that in the past he has used timber + ply that was removed after guniting).

OK, so based on this thinking, the pool walls should be fully self-supporting. With 4" of gunite, what sized rebar is needed and at what spacing?

PB is proposing 3/8" bar at 8" spacing. Our gut feeling is that this is not strong enough and he is cutting costs, but we really don't know. Could we keep the 3/8" bar (which is already on site) and improve the spacing? Or insist on 1/2" rebar with same/tighter spacing? Should we increase the thickness of the gunite? Or is it all OK as PB plans..

.
Advice from PBs on the forum would be very much appreciated. We are on an out-island in the Bahamas with no engineers and no choice of PBs.
