On-Demand Electric Tankless Water Heater Questions

I've been hoping to get rid of the tank water heater and convert to an electric whole house unit, and am trying to decipher the basic info out there. This is a one bath condo, no basement. I don't want a water tank in my living area and also need the space.

In my earlier reading, the temp-rise on the unit I was looking at sounded pretty good at 88. When I get to the specs, I see the below chart (the bold column is the unit being considered, Steibel 20 Plus). I'm reading this as -- at approx 5 gpm, the temp rise will only be about 30 F. in Winter. That would seem grossly insufficient and way off from what I've been reading on sizing. ?

I'm in the NE, cold climate. Don't know yet what the incoming line water temp would be but I'm not expecting it to be above 50 F. in Winter.

Also, after all this reading, it now sounds as if an install will come down to the circuit panel. I see a 240 on the current 50g water heater and 2x30 breakers.


Looking at my GE panel from 1972 I see:

Main Ratings: 120 240 VAC 3 wire 125 Ampere


I am reading here that a 200 or 400 amp service is needed. Does the above information indicate I have 125 Amp service? Leaving the tankless units out of the running?

The specs for the unit say:

Phase........... 2 x single

Voltage......... 240

Watt............ 19.2

Amp............. 2x40

Min Breaker..... 2x50

Wire Size....... 2 x 8
