Sewer smell

For the past couple of months we have had a sewer smell coming from beneath our bathtub. The drain pipe comes up from beneath the slab, and there is an opening about a foot square in the slab (to allow for positioning the drain, I guess). The opening is not covered completely by the tub. After installation of the tub, tar was poured into the opening to hopefully keep critters out and that has not been a problem. The vents are not stopped up. We've put bleach in the hole, and we've tried baking soda, but the smell comes back. Appreciate any suggestions.
