With your varying heights I'm not sure. You may want to check with the kitchen forum. They have lots of experience with this.

why not hang them so it looks good in the room? It doesn't seem like your height or your DH's height should matter that much...I mean really.

I was going to suggest 30" for a start...here's a short thread from the kitchen forum.

My friend's kitchen designer told her the bottom of the light should be 30-36" above the island, and that all hanging lights in the kitchen (i.e. over the table) should be hung at the same height.

bestyears is right with the 30-36". Ours are 36". Here's a photo. I didn't realize it, but it's true, your shouldn't be concerned about you or your husband's height because the lights are in the middle of the island and it's not like you will be bumping into them. The consideration should be if you have stools and the lights aren't so high they shine in the faces of the people sitting at the stools, i.e., they can look up into them, or that they are so low they interfere with those sitting's line of vision across the island.

Thanks for the guidelines guys. I'll go by them. We did buy a light last night. If you were following my island light thread it's choice #2. DH had more of an opinion than what I realized and really wanted that one. He doesn't scream too loud about anything so I went with it.

Oh, I DID fight on the type of light bulbs. They're down lights and he wanted those stupid energy saver ones. I won. :)

Sometime this weekend we'll hopefully get it up and I'll post some pics.

Hi Sheesharee,that light fixture that you choose #2, I just love that one, I saw that light in a lighting store last year, it's going to look great . Good choice.

We had to go by the house today and when there measured the height up from the counter and it is exactly 32". Keep in mind though we have counter height for stools, not bar height. That will make a difference in the height you hang yours if you have seating.

Brutuses - Ours have stools? Ohhh I think I get it. .you're are counter height which is a little lower. My island is 3'. So maybe 30" would be good? I'll have to see I guess when we go to hang.

I just don't want to get it too high and every time I post a pic of my kitchen someone says how I should lower it or visa vera. :) I have a tendency to need to hang everything twice and I'm trying to avoid that!
