Kitchen Cab: Paint/Reface/Replace?
Comments (5)If you're planning on only being there only 5 more years, I would definately just paint the cabinets. Refacing cabinets and replacing doors can cost almost as much as replacing the whole set of cabinets. The cabinet doors are definately a traditional style, so what I'd suggest you do is paint them an off white, and maybe add a touch of glaze to them so they aren't stark white. I would also fill the handle holes and put new hardware in a more traditional place on the doors. If you paint the walls with something other than a neutral light color, say a pretty soft green or yellow, those cabinets will POP! A good way to save some money too is to just spray paint the hindges to match your new hardware. People do it all the time and no one will know the wiser. I know you said you aren't planning on replacing the counters, but laminate counters are not expensive, I'd strongly recommend using some of the money you've saved on the cabinets to change out the counters to something with color. Faux granite, soapstone or something. Then you can do the backsplash in a traditional subway, and I think the kitchen would look really sharp!...See MoreDid anyone just replace the doors and paint?
Comments (28)I have the lovely golden oak cathedral arch cabinets - and a LOT of them. I am planning a reno on a small budget. I need to reno b/c my laminate countertops are peeling and chipping, stove and microwave are fritzing out, and backsplash is a mess (house was poorly taken care of since it was built in 1990, until we moved in and started overhaul in Dec). Anyway, I'm not ready to commit to a full kitchen remod, which will eventually involve a complete reconfiguration. I'd like to paint the cabinets, but the cathedral arch is killing me! I've found it too expensive to replace all the 42 doors w/ oak and I still have the arch on the side panel of pantry. So... What are your thoughts on the link that was previously posted (attached) - where MDF was used to 'transform' the arches? Pics don't really show - do you think this would end up looking like a cheap fix? A little odd? Does the reverse shaker style door weird you out? I'm on the fence...I think this could either work really well or end up being effort spent on a kitchen to look like a cheap patch..any ideas how to play on this idea to update a cathedral arch door? Here is a link that might be useful: Transformation of cathedral arch cabinets...See MoreReplacing Kitchen Cab knobs
Comments (24)rjinga- It appears that we may have the same cabinets. I originally had brass (football shaped) knobs 10 years ago, but have since changed them out to a round oil rubbed bronze (we had a kitchen mini makeover a couple of years ago.) Just changing the knobs made a big difference. If you don't like the brass, just change them to a differenct finish. If you have drawers, then maybe use bin pulls, but I don't think you can go wrong with sticking with a classic knob (especially if you know this isn't your forever home.)...See MorePaint custom oak cabinets and get new doors, or replace altogether?
Comments (27)I have always loved that IKEA kitchen. I see what you're aiming toward, and I'm not saying you shouldn't go in that direction, but painting your cabinetry white isn't necessarily going to get you there. What people don't tell you about sun rooms is that they darken the rooms they are attached to. All the natural light that would have poured into your space is now pouring into the adjacent room, and you're left with a small kitchen window with upper cabinets surrounding it. So what do you do now? Remove the uppers around the window. That means taking out that corner-like cabinet and making the range wall uppers a straight run to the wall. It also possibly means moving those two uppers over the peninsula. Are you interested in making your kitchen window larger? Regardless... you're going to want to invest in really great lighting: cans in the ceiling, under cabinet lighting, and possibly pendants for your peninsula. I know that sounds like a lot for a small space, but it makes a huge difference. Finally, I know you don't want to change your floor plan at all, but I bet the layout folks here can figure out for you how to re-use some of those uppers in the space, or how to reconfigure your existing space to make it function better. It's worth posting your existing layout just to see....See Moresolie
