Background Check

I got a chuckle today when my daughter called to get a little info from me. It appears that my grandson's school now does a background check on everyone that is going to grandparent's day at his school. I guess it's the times we live in now..

That is a bit extreme, but probably not a bad idea. I've realized that when my kids are on field trips at school, they are sent out and about with other parents. There is a requirement for regular volunteers at the school to get a background check, but not for a one time field trips. My kid could be sent off with anybody.

Money comes and goes. Could be legit. Divorces can, indeed, be expensive and they can whack you out mentally/emotionally enough that everything else goes to hell, too. Maybe he had one of those. In any event, that was then; this is now. Where's he at now? Three questions: 1) How long ago was that? 2) How's he been doing commercially in the 1.5 years you've known him? 3) How do know anything about any of it anyway other that what he's said to you? How would you know his finances are "in order" or not? I think a simpler approach -- which I think would be just fine to bring up after 1.5 years -- would be your feelings and concerns about what's true and what isn't and why it's important to you. Face-to-face right out there. If you're thinking about hitching your wagon to this star, I don't see the problem with it. Of course you'll risk a bad reaction but you'll be risking that with a clandestine search anyway. This is perfectly reasonable grown-up stuff for folks who have been alive for a while. It might even bring you closer. I'm not wealthy by any measure and I don't require wealth as a prerequisite from anyone. However, I do insist upon social and financial/commercial competence in those I'm interested in. If I find my 45-year-old, object-of-affection is broke, in-debt, with whacked credit, 2 payments in arrears, and 4 tickets in the last year, that's a deal-breaker. It really doesn't matter how beautiful she may be or how good in bed. I expect my friends to know how to run their lives. In that regard, I'm sympathetic to your concerns.

I was putzing around with Zabasearch last night my oldest SD19 comes in wants to look up her mom (I had already punched her name in I was looking for me I do not exist!!!) She then says "hey can I go after her for the back support she owes dad" ... I said I have no idea ... she was ordered to pay $25 a week ... 15 years ago. I thought she might want to reconnect with mom for nostalgia purposes ... NOPE just wants some play money I guess :)

To people who work with me "light side", I am pretty much as marknmt describes - I don't have a problem doing work. The problem I have is basically that I never bothered to "grow up". I do my work reliably and effectively, and it's not always work that I like doing. Out of the 3Â½ years I just spent at MSP, I spent the majority spraying dishes and pushing them through a sanitizer. I did it religiously and reliably enough that the supervisors began looking to me for recommendations on who else to hire/fire. Heck, they called me in on my days off because 950 dishes took about twice as long to wash when I'm not there... And about the only thing that job EVER had in common with my "chosen vocation" is that, once in a while, they'd let me take the dishwasher apart and tinker with it when it broke. Big. 480. Many relays. Love it. The question I posted here was only about the electrician licensing thing, but there's a lot more on my mind, really. The current, bigger employment problem is that, while everyone who takes the chance and ever actually talks to me usually ends up liking me, the entire freakin' application process EVERYWHERE has gone completely online, and there are no humans in the process anywhere! All the humans see is the results of their cute little multiple-choice job application programs, which pretty much make me look like some sort of ax murderer. And regarding murders having the highest rate of parole success... After having met and lived with a large number of all types of offenders, I have _no_ problem believing that at all. The easiest people to get along with in the prison environment pretty much were murders. Drug dealers are usually the worst. Burglars and other property criminals are in the middle somewhere, and non-homicidal violent offenders are all over the place since the conditions surrounding their offenses are so widely varied.

I would contact your local bar association or a law firm dealing in criminal defense or civil litigation for the name of a reputable, reliable PI. Almost all attorneys have investigators as full-time, depending on the size of the firm, or on call. Then, if you want to go further with your inquiries, you already have a foot in the door. I would NOT go through the phone book.....

In our church, before anyone can work with the kids in ANY capacity, they have to undergo a very involved background check - just keeping the little ones safe.

way back when i was a sub aid at the local school dist..we had to be bonded by the sherrifs...it's like how you have an access code for the computer...did that at a day care...too many divorces ect, these days...

Actually....it's not necessarily that things are much worse now than they were long ago - I mean, what is it, one in five were molested as children or something nuts? That means 20 plus years ago this stuff was happening -

We are more apt to sue now, and since people are extremely PC, and paranoid, companies are more concerned that someone will get mad about abuse and sue. So it's called CYA.

it's a good thing - hopefully the number of cases will drop. But life has always been dangerous.

When I was a chaperon for the church high school kids to go to Appalachia a few years ago, I had to have a background check which also included checking the child and elder abuse records, etc. Chaperons had to be in pairs to take the kids anywhere and if a chaperon was going to the showers, we had to make sure more than one kid was there. These background checks are run every 3 years. It took a while to get used to these rules because these were kids we knew well and knew their parents. It protected the church from liability and also protected the kids from potential harm.

I did fingerprinting for our city's police department about 7 years ago. Not only are background checks done on people working with children, in most cases the person is fingerprinted. Though I don't expect they will ever fingerprint grandma and gramps, but ... you just never know. :-)

Jodi, you made me chuckle... It's sad we have to do things like this now but I know it is a necessary thing. Got to protect our wee ones. At 64 it makes me feel kinda silly!

Before I could work in the cafeteria at school, I had a back ground check done. Even though, I had one done last year, for working at Home Depot.

Makes me wonder, how far back they go... and if they check on my time in Germany.

I don't know why you'd have to have a backgroud check for grandparents day. That seems strange. You are not volunteering. you are visiting the school. Two very different things. They don't do background checks on people going to the sporting events or music events. IMO - the school is going overboard.
