Do you like either of these lamps?

This corner is dark & def. needs some light.

I like the height of this lamp, and even though you can't really see it, the glass base gives off the coolest lighting effect on nightlight mode (which is how I run it 95% of the time).

I like this one too, have had it for years & have an affinity for mica lamps, but the light it casts is... meh compared to the warbly light the first one puts out. But I'm still leaning toward it.

Yes, that area is bare. :) What you can't see are the piles & piles of artwork I've been test driving for this space. When I find something I like, I'll have a set of prints or paintings hung off of center.

I love the base of the first lamp, but honestly don't like the shade with it.

I think the mica lamp seems to fit with the cabinet better.

Please let us see the finished corner when you hang the art and settle on a lamp.

I like the tortoise shell one the best with the shade that comes with it. I like the lines of the shade. Red does give it that added punch and can always be added later--but for now I'm still focusing on the basics. I also like the table lamp with that collection: It's different and yet the same. There was a much cheaper one on sale at JC Penny's for $79 (a Tuscan style bronze with a crackle glaze ceramic in a gold/cream); but they were out of stock, though I have one on hold at another store. I looked online but could not find it. I looked at some of the porcelain ones at Lamps Plus, but they are pretty pricy. Since I do have the recessed lights (on dimmers), I'm thinking of putting just one table lamp near the sofa and one floor lamp where you placed it. Where you have the table put near the entry is almost floating in the entry and will be a bit difficult routing the wiring etc. so that cords are not visable--esp. if I go with a smaller 8x10 rug which I am considering for financial reasons. I'm thinking maybe a set of tall candle sticks (like I had put recently on top of the piano) may look good on that other table. As for the artwork, I like fewer larger pictures. I feel that was my problem in the past my artwork was not large enough. I would like one mantle painting and one painting over the piano (which can even be larger as there is more wall space above the piano than the mantle. Then some grouping of smaller pictures on the other walls. I like the set of four pics you put together to the left of the fireplace and over the ottoman. One other thing with the room is that I plan to put my Christmas tree there as well in which case I would probably put it in the corner with the palm, move the palm out and rearrange the chairs for the season.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies. The room is not as large as it seems. The above photo was taken with a wide lens camera. The room is 14.5'x17.5'. I moved up a lamp from the family room that is 24.5" to the top of the shade but 26" to the top of the finial. The buffet lamps that are in there now are 33" tall, so way out of proportion to what they should be. The duvet is the Wells Palampore from PB so I don't think the blue will match but could still work. There is no yellow in the fabric. I was actually leaning toward the white in the ceramic and the aqua in the glass. The drapes that were in there in the above picture are now in my family room and I have another temporary set in there that aren't really working. I'm not opposed to painting the room. I've just finished painting all the rooms on the main level and will be looking for a new project soon. I'm also open to suggestions if you've seen something that you think may work. Here's a few more pics...

Didn't you consider the last RH chair at one point in the past? I think its not a bad idea to teach kids to not ruin upholstery unless they are too young and can't grasp the concept. But once out of the high chair there is nothing wrong with teaching them to eat without dumping things all over. Or sit and color without getting marker all over either. The kids around me that learned to respect and take care still do as young adults. The ones who didn't learn it young are young adult slobs.

Annie, you mean actually hang the rod on the two small end walls on either side of the window? I never thought of that! I've seen people raise the rod higher, but never that. I'll see how it looks. I got a beautiful new rod last night. And Beverly, I have a pair of drapes ordered very similar to what you photoshopped for me (thank you) we will see how they look. I can't tell you how much I've spend to have drapes shipped to me and to ship them back trying to find the right ones. A lot of it has to do with the wall color as well I think. Don't want it too matchy matchy or to look funny next to the wall color. We will see how these new ones do when I get them in the mail. If they don't work, I don't know what I'm going to do!

I really like the first one! The base looks like it goes so well with the cabinet it is on. Lovely!

I like the second one. If you want more light, make sure you don't use "soft" white bulbs. I like whiter "daylight" bulbs.

I don't care much for the shade on the first one either. The lamp + shade always seemed uncomplinentary to me. But I really like the base, and the way it displays the light.

I primarily use it as a nightlight, which doesn't use the top light (there's a separately controlled candlestick light in that glass part), but does give off enough light for the lamp to serve its purpose (brightening that dark corner, we don't need it as a room light).

I've considered backing the shade with blackout paper to try and make the punching disappear, and never turning on the upper light. I already added parchment vellum, so you can't see the bulb through the punches.

As pictured, the mica lamp is running a soft white CFL because I broke the bulb when I moved the lamp. Don't ask. Normally we keep a halogen bulb in there. It's my high wattage indulgence.

When I select some wall decor I'll post another round. I'm just now trying to pull this room together. I mean, it's only the great room, most used room, and most visible room from anywhere ground level... and we've "only" been in the house about 6 months... what's the rush, right?!?

Why not just find a different shade for the first lamp which you seem to like and is more functional for you? The shape of the shade is a popular style and wouldn't be hard to find a replacement for if it's something you wanted to retain.

I don't know if you want to do this, but does it look like it might be possible to take the first lamp apart and just use the base? A good lamp store that does repairs may be able to refit it.
