Christmas Cookies with The Princess and Bruvver

Oh yes, of course we had our annual baking spree. Here is the Princess, she made a wreath decorated with lots of frosting and some M&Ms:

Bruvver decorated cookies too, here's one of his:

He really was much better at eating cookies than at decorating them, LOL:

Makayla also made some cookies for her school party, she and another girl volunteered to bring cookies. Makenzie informed her that her cookies were the yummiest ever. Makayla had to tell her that NO ONE made better cookies than her Grandma, ever. So we made a combo of vanilla and chocolate, drizzled with dark chocolate and decorated with an M&M holly berry and some leaves. She says the kids at school liked them and I was vindicated, they were the best at school, LOL:

Here are the cookie trays that I made at Elery's house with all our hard work. This one has peanut butter fudge, chocolate fudge, peanut brittle and sugar cookies:

I still had more cookies, so we made a second platter. This one has peanut butter with chocolate kisses, venetian bars, craftyrn's cuccidati, maraschino shortbread, oatmeal cookies with white chocolate and cherries and Sherry's Santa's Helpers:

Boy, it's a good thing I don't have to choose a favorite!

Yes, Sharon, Ben and Jeanette are getting married on Memorial Day weekend, but it's going to be much more interesting than one of my family's Redneck Bonanzas. She is from the Holland area (Holland, Michigan, that is), so she wants to get married there. She's got the church, etc., but she wants to have an appetizer reception in the morning for 300 people, then the ceremony, directly after the ceremony a "cake reception" for I'm not sure who, then the immediate family and friends will have another reception with dinner after that. I'm just confused. She doesn't know if there's a kitchen at the church hall she wants to use, she doesn't know if they have refrigeration, she doesn't know if there's any way to heat anything and she doesn't know what time we can get in, or if we can get into a kitchen the day before. Did I mention that it's on a holiday weekend on the lakeshore and everyone will have to travel so they'll have to book rooms months in advance? I'm not sure she's thought this entirely through yet.... So, yes, appetizers for 300 in May. I don't know if they will be hot, cold, who will serve, what facilities there are for storage, set up or clean up. It should be interesting, but Elery and I plan to sit down with them sometime this month and make some "samples" to see what they like. Oh, and she's lactose intolerant, can't eat cheese or dairy, so she's not wanting anything with cream cheese or cheese, I think. So, no gougere, no spanakopita, no cheese balls, spreads, or dips, although the guests could eat them, I suppose. again, thank you everyone. All the suggestions worked out great. We had plenty of food. As I did not mix up everything, the leftovers will be more manageable. Everything was good, expect I cooked the cake little long and it was dry side but it seemed to have been hit independent. It ended up much longer evening than I anticipated, everyone stayed well into the dark and last people left after 10 pm. So from that I assume everyone had good time as well. Luckily weather cooperated as well, no rain at all the last 4 days. Now my hands and back hurt from all the prep work and running around yesterday, so next couple of days I at least "plan" to take it easy. We have been invited to Xmas even party and asked to bring fruit cake. I have never made one, and if I recall correctly, these are quit dry as well. Anyway, after brief rest, I will be hunting for perfect fruit cake recipe.

LC46, I'm about 40 miles inland from Lake Michigan and 50 miles North of Grand Rapids, so I'm right in the agricultural belt. The county next door is the "asparagus capitol of the world", good years I can buy it out of the field for 50 cents a pound. 15 miles away is a u pick orchard where I pick strawberries and cherries for $1 a pound. 5 miles from the blueberry patch, those were 70 cents a pound this year. I also have a farm market within 5 miles that grows everything they sell, and they sell everything from potatoes and squash to 40 varieties of heirloom apples. Oh, and Elery's house is 45 minutes from Ann Arbor! Come any time... Annie

Ellen, I have to tell you, the noise from that VitaMix is like unreal. Bud plugged his ears, I just winced. Dcarch sggested putting a 5 gallon bucket over top of it and plllog says she wears earplugs. I can certainly see why. Makayla's cookies were much like my chocolate chip cookie recipe, with one cup of mini chips and half a cup of sprinkles. They were chewy and soft in the middle, crunchy on the outside, just like a good chocolate chip cookie should be. Lars, we did use those long sprinkles that aren't so hard, I didn't think I'd like the crunchy little ones very well. They added more color than flavor or sweetness, but it did make them prettier. Ice is treacherous, so no matter where you are ice can bring things to a stand still. We can power through snow, but ice keeps you home. Choir is the only class Bud actually likes, other than science, so his teacher will be the only one that ever gets his homemade hummus, I think. Basil, thank you, I'm going to look for one of those. So much fun making Chritmas Cookies with the GK's! I didn't get to do it this year. Thankfully their Mother was able to do it with them. Kids love this kind of stuff!

Very cute cookie helpers! And their cookies look good, too. The memories you are creating with your grandchildren will be meaningful for them for the rest of their lives. Love the photos!

Jessica, I still have the same old Admiral 20, it's older than Ashley is, LOL. It's having some old age issues, sometimes it doesn't run through the last spin cycle, but it will cost more to fix it than it will to replace it, so I just spin the dial around and start that cycle again. (grin)

Lyra, Cooper doesn't really like cookies, although he will eat a peanut butter cookie if I pick the chocolate kisses off. He'd rather have the prime rib. Me too...

thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. The kids spent Friday night, Saturday and Sunday with me while their Mom finished up her CNA class, and I got to take them to church so Makayla could be the angel in the Christmas pageant! Yes, I have a picture, but I'm here at work...

Annie, you have 2 of the most beautiful little darlings that I've ever seen.

I see you found some almond paste and made the venetian cookies. I've been dying to try your recipe for these and mine are now comfortably resting in the fridge ;) I used raspberry instead of apricot jam due to a goof at the market, but how bad can they be, lol

Makayla just keeps getting prettier and prettier and Bruvver is Mr. Rascal Face. His cookie looks like a two-headed gingerbread man pooping sugar sprinkles. Nice work, Bud.

LOL, Pam, that's SUPPOSED to be a snowflake! I like your version better, though, and so would Bud, I'm gonna tell him. (grin)

Yes, that certainly is his "rascal" face, isn't it? And his sister is such an angel.....and I mean that so literally. (wink)

Linda, she'll be so much fun, my two have been sprinkling the cookies since they were old enough to sit in high chairs and lick the frosting off.

The best part, though, is turning on a Christmas movie and eating those cookies with hot chocolate and the kids, and acting like I don't know every word of dialog in "Charlie Brown" or "Rudolph".

Well, it's almost as much fun as dancing around the kitchen with Bud, with The Tractors on the stereo, and listening to him sing "Santa loves to boogie and Santa loves to dance, Santa likes to rock it, likes to go real fast, Santa Claus is coming in a boogie woogie choo choo train".

Good thing I don't have a video camera in there, it could be really scary!

Once again, Annie, thanks for sharing your family with us. Erin & I skipped "baking" Christmas cookies this year in favor of making "Pattee-poos" (named after my friend, Pattee, who makes them every year). They are the peanut butter-filled Ritz crackers dipped in chocolate. A favorite of us and Santa!

They are precious indeed! There is nothing better than time with the babies.

We didn't make cookies together but we wrapped the presents for Christmas day. Beau played Santa and distributed the presents; he did an amazing job as he didn't move to the next present until the previous one was opened and acknowledged. He even reminded someone to say "thank you" before he moved on.

I have a pretty great life but I gotta say I love your life Annie! Monkey Princess and Bruver are getting so big!! Your cookies are to die for and I love the snow in the first pic behind Makayla. Thank you for sharing your family with us.

I was on the computer, earlier today, when Maggie was here. She wanted one of the choco/vanilla combo cookies with the M&M and chocolate sauce. I told her we would make those on Thursday when she was here. Thanks Annie....:-)

RR, I love my life too. It's busy and crazy and full and sometimes I'm tired, but I love it all. Even that snow out the kitchen window.

Tell Maggie to eat an extra cookie for me, but don't tell her that I let Makayla have COFFEE in that Christmas mug by her elbow. Well, about a cup of milk with lots of sugar and a little bit of coffee, but still, it was coffee, and so very "grown up".

Bud just wanted milk with his cookies, he's such a brother! Those cookies were SUPPOSED to be checkerboards, LOL, but they were a little.....um......misshapen. (grin)

Cathy, we let Makayla pass out presents at the family Christmas party too, she even got to wear my elf hat that plays "We are Santa's Elves". The kids got $50 worth of fun out of that $5 hat!

Pat, I like peanut butter on Ritz crackers, I'm not so sure about adding chocolate, I'll have to try that.

Ann, playing with the kids is one of life's greatest pleasures for me, they don't expect me to act like a grownup!

Annie, I'm another who just adores your posts with the kids. I love that Makayla is baking in her nightgown. My kind of kid! And that Bud...lol.. Love that holly cookie too and now that you mention it I can see the checkerboard. Smiles. Thanks for sharing. All the cookies look really good and every picture of the kids is great.

I guess I'm busted, coconut. (grin) Actually, that picture was taken after we were done decorating and we were getting ready to have cookies and watch Christmas videos. Makayla managed to dump that sweet and sticky coffee down the front of herself and she didn't have clean clothes other than those she had for church the next day. Since we had planned a trip to McDonald's later, I had to throw her clothes in the washer and she wore her nightgown while they were washed. And that's why she has the travel mug next to her, LOL.
