Do it yourself dog baths in Illinois

I've been searching in vain for a DIY dog bath in the Chicagoland area. I would have thought there would be a lot of them!

Alternatively, how do those of you in cold climates bathe your animals in cold weather? Our bathtub clogs up easily and I can't put a hair trap on it because of the way the plug is set in the drain.

Good question! The one here in SE Michigan where I used to go closed down. I have kept my eyes open looking for another one, with no luck. I can't figure out how to search for them in the yellow pages or on the web. Any ideas?

In cold weather, I tend not to bathe my dogs. Partially, I just don't bathe them more than a couple times a year (toweling them off after a rain does a lot toward keeping them clean), and partially because they get at least two baths a year at the kennel where they stay while we are away on vacation.

My smaller dog (40 lbs) is small enough to bathe in the laundry tub. I have a friend who would put a plastic lawn chair in her walk-in shower stall and set the dog in the chair to bathe it, so she didn't have to bend so much.

There are a number of different types of drain traps, I have always found one that works. Now I am using the flat metal kind with holes in it, but I have the plastic mesh dome kind and the metal mesh dome kind and the metal mesh cup kind, too. You might keep looking.

My best solution was to build the paw-washing station next to the back door. Too bad we ended up moving :-(

I wrote this last night around 11ish but didn't post it, so it belongs here: Dear Skyler, one is never ready for doing the dishes. One just rolls the sleeves up and dives in. xoxoxxo P.S., between hash browns and the bathroom, insert washing hands (or do the dishes!) But you probably know that. The teasing over Blagojevich's hair is making me nervous cuz there's no use avoiding the fact that yesterday's haircut left me with a striking resemblance to Mr. Blag's coiffure. Copious amounts of hair gel required to remedy resemblance. The haircutter had a style I've always admired, first seen by me on Julie Christie in "Shampoo," which I told her about. She listened politely but was obviously bored by something so long ago. Haircutter informed me the haircut is called the A-line, long in front, framing the face, short in back. Old-fashioned name is probably just a "bob." In any case, no way would my hair comply. I think the nation is taking this financial meltdown and string of rampant corporate crimes rather well...too well in fact. Just look at how the citizens of Athens register their disapproval, hanging banners from the Parthenon, not to mention Baghdad. Everyone, grab a shoe and let fly. Maybe dangle shoes from the power lines? My wimpy weather report as follows: Rained all day yesterday. Sublime. The plain variety of rain (didn't know there was other kinds before idylls.) Today clear skies, temps in the 40s overnight last night. Tonight expected temps in high 30s. I potted on some rooted cuttings this morning, a Blackbird euphorbia and an anthemis Suzanne Mitchell. The euphorbs love the cool winter temps and look fine all winter. Cindy, I'm so sorry you got snookered into working Saturday. What a Scrooge your boss is! Or possibly just oblivious. One of the stranger things I've seen lately was Elvis Costello interviewing Bill Clinton about his musical influences. Elvis C. has a show on cable called Spectacle. Lou Reed was the previous week's guest. Lou's holding up...barely, but Clinton was a ball of fire as usual, discussing how jazz playing informed his speaking style, etc. Kathy, splurge on really good fruit smoothies. Actually, raspberry margaritas would do, wouldn't they? Sputtering to an abrupt end, waving to all.

I seldom get cold, I can sleep through the nightly train that runs through town at 2 am two blocks away and the light doesn't bother me either. I'm short, so the bed is always long enough, but my big travel issue is the bed. I swear that every time I book a motel they quickly arrange to send the same lousy hard bed. I doubt that I can pack a mattress, LOL. Of course, I still sleep on my old king sized waterbed, leftover from my "hippie" days. Elery says when I grow up, I'll get a big girl bed, LOL. I hope not. Clare, on another level, I wat taking some glass to recycle last week and there was a broken picture frame in the bag. Of course, the shard stuck through the bag and into the outside of my left knee. Not one bandaid or other thing in the Jeep except black electrical tape. So, I pulled both edges of the puncture together and taped it with black electrical tape and then drove to the Emergency Room. They know me on a first name basis, LOL, and now they'll talk about that black electrical tape forever. Two stitches later that electrical tape stayed on better than their surgical tape! Carol (dishesdone) tells me that's an "electrician's bandaid". Annie

Do you prefer shower or tub to wash the dog?

I prefer a walk-in shower for all but the smaller dogs (I mean 20 pounds or less). I think it's easier to be in the shower with the dog in order to get access to all sides. Ditto the suggestion on the hand shower - and get one with an extra long hose (6' or more) so that if your dog keeps cringing toward the corner you can still reach all the areas you need to rinse. We had used a Swanstone base in the last shower we did, it had a good texture (that was still cleanable, thankfully) that offered non-slip standing for me and the dog. In solid white, they are pretty unobjectionable. I prefer cast iron for a purely-people shower, but the swanstone worked well in the dog shower (which was also our people shower).

Thanks for the info! The place in Naperville is a little too far away from me, but I'll call them to see if they know of someone closer.

I forgot about my shower stall, it has a flat drain. It's kind of small but perhaps I can try to bathe my dog in there.

I think if we went to one of those stores we would be asked to leave! :-)

We use a bath/shower in the house. Ordinarily I would do baths every other month but it winds up being more frequent than that because they will get dirty by rolling in something gross etc.

I know where there is one in Lake Geneva, WI. If you're in the northwest suburbs that might not be too far.

I don't know where you live, but there's one in Gurnee that's great! It's the Dogwash Express and Spa, and my dog used to go there twice a week for daycare until we moved about a year ago. We would bring her in periodically on weekends for the do-it-yourself wash, and we would sometimes just have them give her a bath while she was there for daycare. The people there are fabulous, and I highly recommend it!

I'm not in Chicaogland, but down here most PetSmarts/Petcos have a do it yourself area in their grooming department. Might be worth checking into up there.
