Brew Express of other built in coffee makers

Five years ago I bought and installed a Brew Express through-the-wall coffee maker. It s*cks. The waters comes out at 175 degrees and brews coffee in about two minutes. Much too cold and much too fast to make a good cup of coffee.

Now they have a "new and improved" on that, supposedly, brews the coffee hotter and better. The only reason I'd get it is because it fits in the existing hole and for existing owners, only costs $250 for the upgrade.

Does anyone have any experience with this manufacturer or have advice about a built-in coffee maker that you love?

I too had a older Brew Express, but I recently changed to a newer 10 cup. I spoke with them and understood when I bought my original unit it was a new model to the market when it first came out, but it went through improvements over time. They told me it was designed and tested to the coffee industry standards. I was suprised to find coffee is best brewed at around 195-200f at the spray-head, and no heater plate was actually better. When I complained to Brew Express people they understood, but I didn't understand that the temperature drops quite a bit going into a stainless carafe. I also found that they did improve the older model quite a bit since the time I had bought it, but then they found it was necessary to create a better looking brewer, and one that could be more reliable. I also heard they changed to a 10 cup so it will hold better heat. I decided to change to a 10 cup because I couldn't resist the price as an existing customer and that it fit into the same installation box. I was skeptical at first, but they truly improved it. Did you know the new unit can brew 1 cup not just for coffee? It can also adjust the amount for a larger cup. My wife loves it for making tea and coco. I am glad Brew Express improved their product. Yes, it cost me twice, but it is still worth saving counter space and never adding water.
That is my two cents.

Doofus _ I'd be a bit leary of your sales weasel. Miele's DW's are some of the best in the business, they may not fit your habits, or budget but they are really good machines. A compentent cousultant will point out the plusses and minuses and let you come to you own conclusion. Their coffee systems are also top notch, but are not produced in house like the DW's. The only problem's I know with them were in the 1st generation with the steam generators. There was a hose connection system that wasn't as robust as necessary and there were some failures on units that saw heavy use. Miele still comps the parts in most cases even today. The connectors were quickly redesigned and problem solved. I wouldn't worry about the space down the road if that's your only reservation. It's a fairly standard size and will fit a steam oven, microwave and you could even just get a lift up door in stainless or to match your cabinetry if you get tired of it or didn't want to replace with a new one. There are several threads on the merits (or lack of) of these units on here. These units are expensive and must be built in. The general divide comes down to how much you value the "wow" factor of the built in look. Counter standing "automats" are a lot cheaper and pretty much have the same internals. Many of the built in allow you to hook them up to plumbing so you don't have to fill up a water jug.

I too was looking at a built in (Lance Larkin coffeemaker) but was steered away from it after posting the question on GW. A few (very correct comments) were about the built in coffee pot being someday like the under counter can opener and similar gadgets, with the price of the built in you could buy 6 Mr. Coffee's for the counter, etc. I was also concerned about the steam going to the upper cabinets warping the wood. Trying to find a solution as well... sadly, insetting the coffeemaker would interfere with joists, any suggestions would be appreciated... I have little counter space available on the working side of the kitchen... only 24 inches on either side of the cooktop and don't really want to put it in the island... I thought maybe I could move the microwave/convection unit to one end of the island and possibly place it on top of the wall oven... not sure if that would be too high? I would like to have the wall oven at the same height as the island so I can easily offload pans

Personally, I would go the French Press, drip cone and instant hot route, which would be useful for lots of other things too, or a pod maker. I've had coffee from a Keurig and would have bought one for us if we didn't have an espresso maker already. I used to use a drip cone for coffee at work or single cup at home and still use a large one for a thermal pot when entertaining. I likethe French press coffee, but not the silt, so I'd have to learn not to drain a cup. The stovetop route is good too. You have lots of good options. I did look up the average life expectancy for a coffee maker and one source put it at 2 years. Before we got the espresso maker, it seemed we were replacing every year -- less than every two. We bought our first espresso maker 10 or more years ago and still have it. I know we never got that out of any regular countertop model, but I didn't want to be too harsh with the one year evaluation. ;-)

I love having the new 10 cup Brew Express in a cabinet and that it's plumbed for water so we never fill the coffee pot. It's fantastic that it's off the counter. We had the same experience as coffeholic and had quality problems with the 12 cup Brew Express installed August 2008. First I called Brew Express and the customer service person explained the same quality improvements, that it's 10 cup now, fits the same cut out, and said it will last for 10 years plus now with the new engineering method. But our kitchen remodel was through a design build company owned by an architect and the project is guaranteed. We had the contractor buy almost all the appliances so they technically bought the Brew Express. It had been over a year since it was installed but the design build company bought the new Brew Express and came to install it. Yes the new one works great, the coffee is very hot, and we are really pleased with the coffee and product.
