Big difference in building costs
Comments (13)I live just 30 miles away down in Lewiston. We looked at doing a custom build a few years ago in a nicer area. The builder at that time quoted $100/sq ft (not including the lot) and that included custom cabinets, granite, hard wood. His name is Lenny Keys and he might build up in Pullman too. He only does custom homes. If you didn't mind the commute, you should look into building in Lewiston. You can get a really nice (flat!) lot here for a decent price. There are half-acre lots in up-scale subdivisions selling for less than 50K -- which sounds great to me because we are moving to Utah and you can't hardly get a half acre for less than 100K there. Anyway, the weather is so much nicer down here too -- always warmer, hardly any snow, not too much wind, etc. Good luck!...See MorePipe bursting or re/splip-lining to replace sewer main
Comments (2)Currently working for a sewer district we dont even allow slip lining in our district due to some poor experiences. There has been a few pipe bursted laterals done and will only be allowed if they have sufficient grade otherwise it will follow existing dips and belly's. We will allow it also if it's an unusual circumstance such as a building over the lateral or a well manicured yard. Although we prefer open cut replacement if your local Sewer District will let you pipe burst I would go for it. I would certainly speak with them first and ask for their preference and once its done make sure the line replacement history goes in your file. You might also check your home owners insurance because there was a few out there that was paying for replacements....See MoreWhen to re-pipe??
Comments (3)I too live in CA and had old Galv piping. I re-modeled the place last year and went with pex. I prefer copper, but the water is hard and low ph, so pex it is. Eliminating all the old piping has been great. The "ring around the toilet bowl" has disappeared. The aerators are clean. Be aware that running a lot of fittings on pex creates a lot of "bushings" which lead to pressure reduction. The inside diameter of a 1/2" pex fitting is about 5/16". Just be careful in your lay-out. Re-pipe. You will be happy with it....See MoreNeed Expert Opinion re Cellular White Pipe!
Comments (6)Thank you very much for everyone's advice so far. I've learned my lesson. I'm now seeking a contractor who only uses a licensed plumber. I've wasted money on first guy and would still like to know if he used the right pipe or was trying to rip me off by using wrong pipe. He has since come and removed the extra piece of pipe that said "Cellular" on it. I lifted up the PVC pipe that has been installed (supposed to connect to new toilet) and these are the letters that I can see: ME 2010 Jan 26 17 2....and further down, maybe an O then an M then EAO. It also says in big letters "Nonpressure only." To make matters more confusing, the second contractor's licensed plumber, who said this pipe was the wrong one, said I should put all new pipes in the bathroom but would use PVC. Then I brought in another contractor who said he would put all new pipes in the bathroom (original pipes are from 1950s) but should use copper pipes. I am going to get a permit on the job, so that should dictate what can be used. But would like expert plumbers' take on all this. Thank you so much!...See MoreKarmabiker
