NY State restaurant or market--King Crab.

Years ago there was a chain restaurant in Syracuse where I was able to get King crab. I would happily drive to Utica/Rome, Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghampton, Rochester or Buffalo areas for a good King crab dinner. A Big M near me sells frozen legs but they put them out loose in a box and they aren't very appealing. Snow crab is easily found but I greatly prefer King crab.

Costco has King Crab that always looks good. I know what you mean about Snow Crab. It's good but nothing beats King.

I frequently hear good things about Costco and wish there were one closer to me. In NY State they have stores only in the NY City and Long Island areas. I am aware of only BJ's and Sam's Club in Central and Upstate NY and have never noticed King crab in BJ's. I also love lobster and am very glad that Tops Markets occasionally have great sales on really nice live lobster.

My earliest restaurant memory is of having deviled crab at Gaido's Restaurant in Galveston back around 1956 or so. I make my own version of that dish today, and it is still one of my favorites. My first pizza was in Shreveport, LA, and it had shrimp on it and no cheese. I was 14 at the time and did not eat cheese, and so I loved it. I lived in San Francisco for 12 years, worked in a restaurant there, had friends who worked in restaurants there, but never had a memorable restaurant meal there - I think the restaurants in New Orleans are much better, for my taste. Almost every meal I've had in N.O. (or even in the state of Louisiana) was memorable. I also remember having great food at sidewalk cafes in Houston, like Ari's Grenouille and Maison des Crepes. I really like the Cajun/Creole influences that I found in SE Texas and southern Louisiana, and I am partial to alligator tail, although I love the sushi that I find in L.A. I liked street food in Mexico City, especially the quesadillas de huitlacoche. In Merida, I found a Lebanese/Mayan restaurant that had excellent cochinita pibil that I will never forget, and I've tried to replicate it myself with reasonable success. I had jumbo Gulf shrimp on the beach in Vera Cruz that was very memorable, although I like what I've made recently better. I think I have high expectations for restaurants, and I generally feel that there is something missing or something that could have been done better when I eat out. There are a few restaurants that I appreciate for their atmosphere/ambience, whether the food is excellent or not. I'm originally from the village of Metamora in Michigan. I haven't lived in MI since 78' and a lot has changed since. My idea of classic regional is skewed. Most of the family and people my parents associated with then were very much into hunting, fishing and all sports. No one I knew as a child frequented restaurants except maybe a hamburger in a bar. We had one wealthy friend who took us to a steak house once. There was a slant towards German style foods and Irish. Also, it all depended on the time of year and the hunting and fishing season. We had venison, pheasant, wild goose, rabbit and fried fish. Sometimes turtle stew or bear jerky. On Sundays there was roast beef dinners. In the summer everyone got together for cookouts where a few of the above meats and fish was brought as well as hotdogs in the skin and there was always a few different types of potato salad, macaroni salad, many kinds of relishes, garden items, there was always fresh ground bologna salad and sometimes blueberry and rhubarb pie. Wisconsin Colby cheese with Ritz crackers were popular as well as Canadian pepper cheese. In between having wild game or fish there was always pots of ham and potatoes stew, and an American version of goulash made with ground beef. In my teen years after the parents divorce most of my food consumption came from a can unless I was at grandmas house and she could have been a famous chef. I'm now in Florida in an area where everyone is from somewhere else. There is a big mix of cuisines. I cannot think of one dish that would be considered regional.

If you wait until next week, IÂll take you to the Kutztown Folk Festival here in eastern PA, where youÂll be able to sample a huge variety of PA Dutch specialties all in one place (link below) and be tempted to take home one of the 2000+ locally made quilts on display. Some of your choices will include chicken pot pie, schnitz un knepp (ham cooked with dried apples and dumplings), Lebanon bologna (a type of summer sausage) sandwiches, potato cakes, sausage and pepper sandwiches, shoofly, cherry crumb or other crumb-topped fruit pies, corn pie, fried scrapple and/or corn meal mush, roast ox, and pickles and preserves of many varieties. On the way home, weÂll stop at one of the farmersÂ markets for thinly sliced dried beef, applewood smoked bacon and ham, Lodi apples, Uncle HenryÂs hard pretzels, any one of a dozen varieties of potato chips still fried in lard, sticky buns, chip steak, freshly picked corn, untrimmed celery, pickled eggs and red beets, pot pie noodles, whoopie pies and Moravian sugar cakes. I confess that I wonÂt feel much like cooking dinner since IÂll be tired from volunteering at the festival. We can go out for dinner at any one of a score of diners or 100+ year old still-operating village hotels/taverns, where itÂs possible that some of the nightly specials may be stuffed beef heart with gravy or pig stomach stuffed with potatoes, onions, smoked and fresh sausage. YouÂll have to remember that many of the vegetables or items like steamed clams will be served with addiction-inducing browned butter. Yuengling beer will be on tap everywhere but you can also have prize-winning Chambourcin wine from one of the Lehigh ValleyÂs vineyards. Dixie I really must try your fire and ice salad.....it looks so good. I've copied and pasted it. Ann those prawns and avocado are one of my favourite combos as well. Just wish our lime tree would hurry up and produce. All citrus crops in the Canaries were devastated by the April hot winds. Just hope I get some fruit this fall. Nice burritos AM and your blog is great! Marigene....all you've made looks delish. I envy you being able to make some of Annie's salsa. We don't get any canning equipment over here. Perhaps I'll try and make some for my daughter when I get to Canada next month. Light and easy food these past days. Weather has been hot and humid and I've been clearing out closets in the guest bedrooms and caught a bit of a stomach bug. So I made a vegetable frittata one day to use up leftover veggies, together with a salad. And yesterday we went out to the newly tried restaurant of the other day where I had the gorgonzola tortellini. This time that was Wolfram's choice while I took ravioli in tomato sauce. Weather was lovely yesterday with a little breeze. View across the side street from the restaurant was of a pretty little Spanish cottage and a beautiful Canary palm. SharonCb

I order king crab legs from Alaska and they are delicious! Not cheep, but so good. I ordered crab legs, shrimp and halibut last week. We had crab legs and shrimp Christmas Eve.

I don't buy fish or meat from BJ's so I didn't even know where to look for crab. I did find some today so I guess they carry it regularly. Earlier today I shopped at Wegmsn's and while I was looking for shrimp I found King Crab from Russia and I bought about 3/4 of a pound. The price makes it something for a very special holiday. Wegman's also has lobster on sale "through the holidays" so I will buy some for me and my son (married, but DIL doesn't eat it) for New Year's Day. He makes it into Alfredo. I eat my lobster hot, soaked in butter or cold, as in a lobster roll. I am interested in ordering crab from Alaska too.

For the past five or so years I have ordered from pike fish market in Seattle, www.pikeplacefish.com. In September we were in Alaska and went in the store of www.captainjacksalaska.com and that is where I ordered from this time. Both sell Alaskan king crab. Captainjacksalaska had a special on crab legs so I saved a lot on shipping. They both have next day shipping! I think you will be pleased with either one, I certainly am.

At the risk of going a little off topic, I've been meaning to ask about king crab legs. We've had them on sale lately ($14.99/lb - don't know if that's good or not) so I bought some a couple weeks ago. It was the first time I've had them that I can recall, and at first taste I found them so salty as to be borderline unpalatable. They were fine in their final destination of crabs benedict, but it left me wondering if they're always that salty or if I got an inferior product. (Which would surprise me, given where I bought them.) What's your take?

Nancy, when I first ordered crab legs from Pike Fish Market they were from Russia. I think two years ago they told me they were now only buying Alaska crabs. That was good news to me. I didn't know in the beginning that they were from Russia.

No, Alaska crab legs are not salty, or not to me. They are not cheap either, but the way I look at it is I order once or maybe twice a year, usually ten pounds. It is a real treat for my family. They are delicious!

I have a brother-in-law that used to work for Sysco's in Baldwinsville (near Syracuse). Sysco's is a food supplier to restaurants. We used to order king crab legs through him. He has since moved to Connecticut (the end to king crab legs).

The crab I bought from Wegman's was partially defrosted, and sold from the front case. I put them in my fridge, expecting to cook them last night. I was upset about a sick pet and didn't bother to make a real supper last night and I know I have to cook them today. I have read online that King crab is sold cooked and frozen so I don't need to do more than really heat them to a safe temperature. I plan to steam them but don't know exactly how long to cook defrosted, refrigerated crab. Any suggestions. Thanks.
