Gas Water Heater Does Not Heat Water

I have an A.O. Smith 63 gallon gas water heater that is about 12 years old. When we returned from a 2 week vacation we discovered we had no hot water. I checked and the pilot light was on. I drained about 5 gallons of water from the tank. I turned on the hot water tap in the kitchen sink and let it run for several minutes. This should have been enough to activate the main burner but it never ignited. If I turn the thermostat dial up a notch the main burner will come on and work for about 10 minutes then go off. This will provide luke warm water. In other words, the main burner does not automatically come on. I checked the aerators in the house to see if there were any plastic particles in them which would indicate the dip tube was deteriorating but they all looked good. Any ideas on what could be causing this problem?
