I need a new gravy boat and I'm having hard time finding what I want. All I want is a plain white gravy boat (good quality) with an attached stand (or saucer). I like the traditional shape with a handle on one end and a "spout" on the other. I use a ladle with gravy, I don't pour from the boat.

I have seen too many gravy boats go slip slidin' away from an unattached saucer when being passed, so I don't want that.

While looking for this elusive item, I see quite a few that look like short fat pitchers and others with the traditional shape that do not require a saucer. I always think the saucer is necessary to catch the inevitable drips caused by wiping the gravy from the bottom of the ladle along the edge of the boat.

What is your preference in gravy boats?

I like a ceramic Gravy Boat with the partition, that stops any fat
from pouring out. I had 2 but they are in Limbo ,somewhere in the house.
I have two SS Boats with a saucer attached but
prefer the ceramic or porcelin because I can micro wave.

Traditionally a gravy boat with an attached saucer should be used with a ladle....but a gravy boat without an attached saucer should properly be poured from.
I bought one as a gift a couple of years ago from Pier One Imports....

no no no no~~ Shiny stainless steel is about the worst choice for a roaster! Something dark works so much better. My favorite roaster for using with a lid ( and I use a roaster for other things besides turkeys!) is an old dark blue enameled one that belonged to my grandmother....the brand name is "Savory" and they are still being sold on ebay and other places. I also have a roasting pan very similar to the one in the link below. It holds a really big bird....doesn't have a cover...but if it's browning too fast I can tent it with foil. And that dark pan makes nice crispy bits for gravy and goes very well over 2 burners. It has been said that if you cook your turkey with a lid, you are steaming it not roasting. Shiny stainless is not only a poor conductor of heat....but hard to keep looking like that. If you want a roaster to use to make wonderful roast turkey, buy a dark one. Flour makes gravy thick. Cooling gravy gets very thick too. However, what has been said is that floured gravy that is cooked at a high heat for a long period of time will eventually lose its thickness. The key is that the floured gravy is cooked at a high heat for a long time. Something happens that results in a breakdown of the flour's ability to keep the gravy thick. If you normally don't heat your gravy at a high heat for extended periods of time, you would never encounter this situation. It's similar to the idea that browned flour, such as is used for making a traditional dark roux, doesn't have the thickening power of a lighter colored roux. So boiling a thin, floured gravy may not result in a thicker gravy. Not unless it is boiled enough to actually reduce the liquid quite a bit. "Sauces thickened with starches should be reheated carefully, as they will lose some thickening ability if reheated to a full boil."

Yikes! I just realized I left out the last 2 paragraphs of Giada's pot roast somehow - here it is again, in total. Give it a try - the gravy is absolutely to die for. Stracoto with Porcini Mushrooms Recipe courtesy Giada De Laurentiis Cook Time 3 hr 25 min 6 to 8 servings Ingredients 1 (4-pound) boneless beef chuck roast Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, sliced 6 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped 1 cup dry red wine 1 3/4 cups canned beef broth 1/2-ounce dried porcini mushrooms 1 large sprig fresh rosemary, plus extra for garnish Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Pat the beef dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the beef generously with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a heavy 6-quart roasting pan over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until brown on all sides, about 15 minutes total cooking time. Transfer the beef to a bowl. Add remaining tablespoon oil to the pan, add the onions and saute until tender, scraping up the brown bits on the bottom of the pot, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and saute 1 minute. Angelaid-use the drippings from whatever meat you cooked to make brown gravy.If you don't have drippings use canned beef broth.I keep a couple of cans in the pantry at all times.Thicken with cornstarch,not flour,and the secret to brown gravy is strong left over coffee! About 1/2 cup to 2 cups other liquid (never use milk for brown gravy!).If you don't have leftover brewed coffee you can use a couple of Tbsps. dry instant coffee.I also keep that on hand just for gravy purposes.You can't taste the coffee at all and it makes the gravy nice and brown and flavorful.I made brown gravy for Thanksgiving like this because DGD requested brown gravy for her mashed potatoes and she loved it.If she will eat it,must be good cause she is a very picky eater.There is also a product called kitchen Bouquet that can be added to your liquid to make the gravy brown but it isn't something one normally has in the pantry.

We prefer a 4 quart measuring cup. Just kidding! I use the Villeroy & Boch one that I have, it has a pour end and a handle end and an attached saucer. It goes with my china. I like it. Here is a pic.

Barnmom, that's exactly what I am looking for. I was thinking of all white to to go with any china, but I love that one. I really like the Villery & Boch patterns.

Hmm, maybe I need new every day china to match a new gravy boat?

Lou, I've never seen one with a partition.

I did see some that are insulated to keep the gravy warm. They are lind of utilitarian looking -- not pretty for the table. I agree that it's nice to pop it in the microwave.

I didn't know about the pour vs ladle rule. I've always had a gravy boat with a saucer, but I want it attached to prevent the boat from sailing away!

Replacements.com has the same gravy boat in a pattern called "Manoir" in plain white. The pattern uses the same molds as "Petite Fleur" without the flower pattern.

I'll tell you what else works great as a gravy boat. A small china/ceramic teapot or coffee pot. I have a coffee pot that matches my china and I never used it. So one Christmas I poured the gravy into the coffee pot and it was perfect. Doesn't drip. You can also buy small insulated pitchers with lids that work great too.

Thanks, Eileen, but I was hoping to get one for a whole lot less money! However, it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I though a quick google search would turn one up, no problem, but that has not been the case!

I have one of those fat separators, but in plastic. I use it to separate the fat from the drippings whan I am making gravy....not for serving it.
I have several gravy boats....but then I'll just bet you guessed that didn't you..;Q And after one dinner hat her house, where she served the gravy ion a pyrex 2 cup measuring cup....with the sterling ladle, so does my daughter!! LOL!
Places like Pier One or World Market often have very nice white porcelain gravy boats.

I have an old "no drip gravy separator" similar to Woodie's, except that it has vegetable decals inside and out (and no pink). I picked it up at a yard sale long ago. It's charming, in an old-fashioned way. But, like Linda, I consider it best for making gravy, not serving. The wrist action needed for using the handle is "utilitarian" -- best done in the kitchen, not at the table.

At dinner, I use a small round stainless steel bowl with attached liner, which is used with a ladle. Afterward, I transfer the leftover gravy to a rubber food saver (Oneida) that is shaped like a gravy boat, with matching cover, so it can then be reheated in the MW and poured from the spout.

I'm at work and ebay is blocked. I'll have a look when I get home. Thanks. I hope the auctions haven't ended by then but there is a never-ending supply of stuff on ebay.

There's a Pier One down the road that I pass on the way home, so I'll pop in tonight. I was hoping to give this idea to someone for a Christmas gift for me, but I think I'll suggest something else and buy it for me from me!

I'll check in Kitchen Kapers, too. It's in the same mall as P1. And I have to walk past Talbot's to get from one to the other, so I'll see if there are any prezzies for me in there, too. Oh yeah -- Ann Taylor Loft is right next door! This could end being a very expensive gravy boat after all.

Woodie : That's the Idea. Mine were White Porcelin China.
The gravy pours from the bottom not the top.

It was long with the handle on one end.
It was not for making Gravy but serving.

I make the Gravy right in the roasting pan and
try to get most of the fat out then.

Right now I'll have to stick with the SS, with attached Saucer and use the Latel.

I have a Tupperware insulated gravy boat. It's not pretty, it's not white. BUT it keeps the gravy warm! Guests don't seem to mind; I think they'd rather have piping-hot gravy from Tupperware, than rapidly-cooling gravy from an all-white ceramic gravy boat. But yes, I admit, the Tupperware looked out of place and clunky on my Thanksgiving table. But no one seemed to care or notice--too busy stuffing their faces LOL!

I don't know why I never thought of that?
Although when I think about it more, the Gravy stayed pretty hot in the All White Porcelin China Gravy Boat.
Insulated Tupperware Gravy Boat????? What will they think of next?

Wow, the gravy boats on ebay are beautiful! I'm watching several of them -- better than I could have found in a store for the price!

Tupperware?? I have too many bad memories of Tupperware. Not so much the product, as of the parties back in the early '70's. I still have a spork I won in a stupid game.

Relacements.com has saved my bacon more than once. My china is Wedgewood Willow, bought by my paternal grandmother, no longer with us. She bought *everything* the soup tureen, cream soup cups, compote cups, etc. The whole set got flooded in our basement in Hurricane Floyd in the dish pack [we had only recently moved in]. I love my gravy boat. Well after I soaked in a bleach solution...

A gravy boat you like is not as easily found as you'd hope. When you find yours put it on top of the fridge!!!!

Just kidding, good luck! And talk to a china professional at a better department store - they can steer you toward a pattern that meshes with yours and then you can hit replacements.com :)

Lou, I make gravy by the bucket load in a large covered skillet on my stove top. I pour wee bits of it into the gravy boat to put it on the table for holiday meals. I never make gravy any other time.

I'm looking at some of those gravy boats on ebay. I'm not in the market right now but I might pick another one for sauces other than gravy if served at the same time. I use a large creamer (small pitcher) for maple syrup.

Watch out for me on ebay - LOL! nah no funds at the moment but for you ebayers out there. General question - What approval rating do you look for? I saw a nice one but approval rating of seller was 93% - that doesn't seem good...?

Don't be impatient and get one you like,at the right price

Maggie: I try to stay with Sellers who have a 99% to 100%
Positive Feedback. If a Seller has 1 Negative Feedback,
take a look to see what it is.It might be the buyer who is at fault.
I had a Buyer, who was a real Screwball and gave me negative feedback.
It was later revoked by ebay.
I have almost 300 Positive Feedbacks but I sold Collectibles,
not items by volume.

I have a few Fiesta Ware ones that I use along with a ladle. I like the squat, sturdy shape & I can warm the gravy boats in the oven or micro before putting the gravy in.

Sands- is the china your maternal grandmother's? Because that must be a spectacular set! Replacements.com is a lifesaver for sure but their prices make me dizzy.

My good china is Wedgwood Florentine which was promptly discontinued after I got married. Fleshing the set out past place settings has been pretty much impossible without a blossoming money tree. The gravy boat alone replaces at a few hundred $. Ha! Bring on the tupperware!

Actually I spotted this one last year & think it's pretty fabulous. The "tail" is actually the handle of the ladle.

There are some attractive stainless insulated gravy boats. Think upscale "french" coffee decanters...that type of thing.
I don't have one but will get one some day.

Well I didn't NEED a new gravy boat, but thanks to the ebay link from barnmom I bought one today. Even though it didn't have a spout or a handle, I waited until the last few minutes to bid, in case it was the one Carol was watching, and got it for the minimum - $9.99. Of course shipping from Canada is more than the piece but...

I think it will be nice for gravy, sauces and small flower arrangements.

Lee, hoping that Carol finds the perfect one too.

I have a short squatty one. I found a tea pot warmer (the kind that uses a tea light) at the thrift store for a euro. I keep the gravy on that it keeps it reasonable warm. Although I have never used it when it would have to be passed around. It stayed put on the buffet table.

Lee, I think you have a very pretty new gravy boat! There were several I liked, too. I'm going to look for one in the future. Right now my china cabinet needs a purge and tidy and until I do that I can't justify a new anything!

Lee! That's one of the ones I was watching on ebay! Glad to see it got a good home. I missed out on a pretty one made by Spode. The bidding got too high anyway.

I get frustrated at work because ebay is blocked and I can't keep up with my items. I know I can enter pre-bids, but I can't see what's going on.

Honestly, you'd think they expect us to work around here, when we have better things to do. Humph.
