Kitchen Aid Ice Cream maker attachment opinions

Susan's post above about the KA Cheese grater has inspired me to ask about the KA Ice Cream attachment. I used an ice cream maker at my son's house to make the best lemon and raspberry ices in the world recently, and wonder if I should get an ice cream maker that would be used infrequently and be a pain to store, or just get the KA attachment. Any body have any experience with it?

I have the KA Ice cream bowl. I leave it in my garage freezer.

It works great. But You are supposed to let it thaw out before washing and then back to the freezer..If I'm making several flavors, I have to plan it over a few days.

I'm not sure if a "counter top" electric one would give you the option of using it "quicker".

If you only make one flavor now and then..then KA bowl is probably the way to go.

The KA for washing requires you to 1) wash bowl, 2) wash "mixer wand"...I'm not sure how much clean up the other types require.

I read that gelato is different in technique: churned at lower speed and temp than ice cream, and no whipping in of air, thus enabling lower calorie ingredients such as milk instead of cream or egg custard, without compromising taste or texture Have the gel filled bowl for kitchen aid and it works ok for fruit sorbet and ice cream But am considering a condenser type (chilling built into machine rather than a separate canister bowl that u pre freeze) but really want gelato worthy equipment Have looked at de longhi, Musso, simac, Ariente Viva compact... Some of these get pricey but really can't find good reviews I think the cuisinart and many of others (including from brands named above) are all purpose cold dessert (ice cream, yogurt, sorbet etc) and may not be able to do gelato properly? I have a KA ice cream attachment plus the Cuisinart ice cream maker, which will only make 1-1/2 quarts, I think. Anyway, it is about 25% smaller than the KA, and I take that into consideration with the recipes. Plus I like to add things like fruit to the ice cream, which makes the batch larger. You cannot make back to back batches on the KA maker - you have to store it back in the freezer for several hours to get it back to temperature. The Cuisinart is a good second machine to get, however, as it is more portable (I run it in the sewing room because it is so noisy), and it is easier to use than the KA attachment because you pour ingredients into the top hole, which is much more accessible than the opening for the KA attachment. I think it is still a good idea to match one or two batches of ice cream a couple of days in advance, if you have storage space in your freezer, since ice cream stores extremely well. No one will know that it is two days old. BTW, when I bought the Cuisinart, it was on sale at Kohl's for a ridiculously cheap price, and so I couldn't pass it up, even though I already had the KA attachment. I'm glad I have both. Lars

Neelys Homemade Peach Ice Cream Recipe Yield: 4 servings Level: Easy Ingredients 5 large ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and chopped 1/4 cup water 1 (12-ounce) can peach nectar 1 cup sugar 4 ounces sour cream 1 pint heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons lemon juice Praline Pecan Sauce, recipe follows Directions Cook's Note: A few hours before making, place ice cream insert into the freezer Place chopped peaches into a saucepan. Add water and a can of peach nectar. Cook over medium heat until soft and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and drain peach juice. Place peaches into a large bowl; add sugar and allow to cool to room temperature. Add sour cream, heavy cream, vanilla extract and lemon juice to the bowl with the peach mixture. Using an immersion blender mix together to incorporate. (If you do not have an immersion blender, a food processor works just as well.) Remove ice cream insert from the freezer and turn the machine on. Pour the peach mixture into the insert and follow manufacturer's instructions for churning. Freeze ice cream in a covered container until ready to serve. Serve warm Praline Pecan Sauce over ice cream. Praline Pecan Sauce: 2 1/2 cups chopped pecans 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 stick butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently until smooth and syrupy. Serve warm. Store leftover sauce, covered, in the refrigerator. I've make this recipe and it's wonderful. I purchased a Cuisinart 2 qt. and love it. I have checked around and found that Sam's and Costco have the best price for the 2 qt. I make a special tropical fruit ice cream and have been sharing 1qt. with family and friends (1 at a time). The other 1qt. I keep for myself. The ice cream that I make is rarely found sold in stores. If I had the money, I would have purchased a bigger one. In other words, homemade ice cream is always so much tastier and fresher than store bought that you wouldn't have any trouble making it in large quantity.

I also have the KA ice cream attachment, and I like it because it easily makes two quarts and is relatively quiet. I bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker shortly after it got the KA attachment because it was on sale at Kohl's for ridiculously low price (which I can't remember), and I don't like it quite as much. For one, its limit is 1-1/2 quarts (less than most of my recipes), and it makes too much noise if I run it on my kitchen counter, since my kitchen is open to the living room. So I generally move it to the sewing room if I want to use it.

Of the two, I like the KA better, but I haven't noticed that much difference in clean-up. The cuisinart has more parts to store, however, since it has to have its own motor. Like Terry, I store both mixing bowls in the freezer in the garage.

Lars, lucky you on the quiet..I must have the noisiest KA in the universe!

My husband wears noise canceling ear protection when I'm using it when he's home..I don't blame him!

Interesting! My KA doesn't do ANYTHING quiet except sit. I have what I think is the same cheap Cuisinart that was on sale at Kohl's or something similar and it doesn't make a huge batch (this is an advantage maybe). It's a little loud but it's not possible that my KA could do it quieter. My KA must be Terri's KA's littermate!

I don't think you can wash any of them before thawing somewhat because of course the water would freeze onto them. And they need to be refrozen between uses...

I have the Costco 575 HD Pro...and it has ALWAYS been loud!

I sometimes wish there was a muffler I could put on it. LOL
