Kitchen Aid Ice Cream maker attachment opinions

Susan's post above about the KA Cheese grater has inspired me to ask about the KA Ice Cream attachment. I used an ice cream maker at my son's house to make the best lemon and raspberry ices in the world recently, and wonder if I should get an ice cream maker that would be used infrequently and be a pain to store, or just get the KA attachment. Any body have any experience with it?

I have the KA Ice cream bowl. I leave it in my garage freezer.

It works great. But You are supposed to let it thaw out before washing and then back to the freezer..If I'm making several flavors, I have to plan it over a few days.

I'm not sure if a "counter top" electric one would give you the option of using it "quicker".

If you only make one flavor now and then..then KA bowl is probably the way to go.

The KA for washing requires you to 1) wash bowl, 2) wash "mixer wand"...I'm not sure how much clean up the other types require.

You can also do it the really old fashioned way -- the same method that has long been used to make sorbet. Just pour the mixture into a baking dish, and set that into your freezer. Also, you will need a heavy glass or metal bowl, an electric hand mixer, and a bowl of ice big enough for the first bowl to sit in. Put the heavy glass or metal bowl and the beater attachments for the hand mixer into the freezer at the same time as the ice cream mix to chill them. When its almost but not quite fully frozen, use a fork to break it up into small lumps about the size of a nickle or a little less. Then put it back into the freezer about 10 minutes to set up a bit again. Now, working as quickly as possible, take the pre-chilled heavy bowl out of the freezer,and set it in a bath of ice cubes in the 2nd larger bowl. Quickly transfer the ice cream mixture into the chilled bowl, and beat it as much as possible with the electric mixer ONLY until the lumps are broken up, and it begins to whip up a bit. Then, back into the freezer for another 15 to 30 minutes, until its not at all "melty" but still a little soft. Repeat the beating/whipping process several times -- the idea is to whip as much air into it to make it creamy and fluffy as possible, without melting it too much at each whipping. The chilled bowl, the ice bath, and the chilled beaters help, but beware that the very act of beating it creates friction between the bowl and beaters, which makes heat, so this process is a balancing act between beating in air and melting the ice cream. Done right, which isn't at all hard to do with just a little practice, this method does work, albeit it will never be quite as fluffy as commercial ice creams you are used to, which not only incorporate a large volume of air into the mix using specialized equipment, but which also generally use gums and stabilizers which prevents the product from melting and turning liquid as fast as a pure, cream and milk only product will. So after much research I purchased the Whynter Sno machine. I think I read every review on the internet, but did come up with this pearl of information--this company apparently makes the ice cream makers for sale under other labels , and the Lello 4090 is eerily similar to the Whynter machine. I purchased from Quality Matters internet store and was very impressed with service, price and I got the machine the next day! First impression is--WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Ha Ha I love ice cream, frozen yogurt and this machine is crazily simple to use and cleans up in a snap. At first I wanted to hide it in a cupboard but instead decided to put in on the counter top. It's silver so it goes with my appliances and it's kind of attractive (although large.) I was afraid it would be really noisy (it's not--like a dishwasher running compared to the electric salt/ice machine which would wake the dead.) I haven't had time to make a custard base but threw in some yogurt Kefir just to see if it worked. Yes, it works! In fact I am just amazed at how simply it does work--and I left the machine run a little longer than suggested and it came out like real ice cream--not soft serve. I'm really glad I got a 2 quart model (I was used to a 4 quart salt/ice) anything smaller than 2 quart would be pretty small. OK I'm really excited about this purchase and I can't imagine an ice cream machine that worked better (so glad I didn't shell out the $699 for the Musso lussino machine on amazon.) Granted, I am a person who will go out for frozen yogurt almost daily. . . so I'm sure this purchase will pay for itself quickly. Highly recommended if you are an ice cream addict like myself.

I have the KA attachment and like it a lot. I wouldn't say there was a problem with the ice cream holding up in the freezer for long since I know we had it in the the freezer for more than a few days, possibly up to a month (although it is doubtful we let it stay that long without eating it!) My only complaint is that you're supposed to freeze the attachment for about a day before using it, so you can't use it spur of the moment unless you have room in your freezer to store it there all the time. Then again, for all I know, all ice cream makers may be this way. Chrissy

Neelys Homemade Peach Ice Cream Recipe Yield: 4 servings Level: Easy Ingredients 5 large ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and chopped 1/4 cup water 1 (12-ounce) can peach nectar 1 cup sugar 4 ounces sour cream 1 pint heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons lemon juice Praline Pecan Sauce, recipe follows Directions Cook's Note: A few hours before making, place ice cream insert into the freezer Place chopped peaches into a saucepan. Add water and a can of peach nectar. Cook over medium heat until soft and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and drain peach juice. Place peaches into a large bowl; add sugar and allow to cool to room temperature. Add sour cream, heavy cream, vanilla extract and lemon juice to the bowl with the peach mixture. Using an immersion blender mix together to incorporate. (If you do not have an immersion blender, a food processor works just as well.) Remove ice cream insert from the freezer and turn the machine on. Pour the peach mixture into the insert and follow manufacturer's instructions for churning. Freeze ice cream in a covered container until ready to serve. Serve warm Praline Pecan Sauce over ice cream. Praline Pecan Sauce: 2 1/2 cups chopped pecans 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 stick butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently until smooth and syrupy. Serve warm. Store leftover sauce, covered, in the refrigerator. I've make this recipe and it's wonderful. I also have the KA ice cream attachment, and I like it because it easily makes two quarts and is relatively quiet. I bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker shortly after it got the KA attachment because it was on sale at Kohl's for ridiculously low price (which I can't remember), and I don't like it quite as much. For one, its limit is 1-1/2 quarts (less than most of my recipes), and it makes too much noise if I run it on my kitchen counter, since my kitchen is open to the living room. So I generally move it to the sewing room if I want to use it.

Of the two, I like the KA better, but I haven't noticed that much difference in clean-up. The cuisinart has more parts to store, however, since it has to have its own motor. Like Terry, I store both mixing bowls in the freezer in the garage.

Lars, lucky you on the quiet..I must have the noisiest KA in the universe!

My husband wears noise canceling ear protection when I'm using it when he's home..I don't blame him!

Interesting! My KA doesn't do ANYTHING quiet except sit. I have what I think is the same cheap Cuisinart that was on sale at Kohl's or something similar and it doesn't make a huge batch (this is an advantage maybe). It's a little loud but it's not possible that my KA could do it quieter. My KA must be Terri's KA's littermate!

I don't think you can wash any of them before thawing somewhat because of course the water would freeze onto them. And they need to be refrozen between uses...

I have the Costco 575 HD Pro...and it has ALWAYS been loud!

I sometimes wish there was a muffler I could put on it. LOL
