Double Batch with KitchenAid Ice Cream Attachment?

I have been trying to do some research about the KA Ice Cream attachment.

Has anyone successfully made two batches in a row? For example, made a french vanilla and scooped out to make a flavored ice cream? Does it stay cold enough?

If not, can anyone recommend an ice cream maker they use to make 2-qt. batches of ice cream?

I know they have compressor ice cream makers like the top of the line Cusinart that can make multiple batches.

We wanted to have an ice cream social party and would rather make a couple batches in a row rather than a week leading up make a batch a day.

I have a KA ice cream attachment plus the Cuisinart ice cream maker, which will only make 1-1/2 quarts, I think. Anyway, it is about 25% smaller than the KA, and I take that into consideration with the recipes. Plus I like to add things like fruit to the ice cream, which makes the batch larger.

You cannot make back to back batches on the KA maker - you have to store it back in the freezer for several hours to get it back to temperature. The Cuisinart is a good second machine to get, however, as it is more portable (I run it in the sewing room because it is so noisy), and it is easier to use than the KA attachment because you pour ingredients into the top hole, which is much more accessible than the opening for the KA attachment.

I think it is still a good idea to match one or two batches of ice cream a couple of days in advance, if you have storage space in your freezer, since ice cream stores extremely well. No one will know that it is two days old.

BTW, when I bought the Cuisinart, it was on sale at Kohl's for a ridiculously cheap price, and so I couldn't pass it up, even though I already had the KA attachment. I'm glad I have both.

You can get the bucket crank type which uses ice cubes and rock salt.

They come up to 6 quart capacity, as well as motorized.

You can keep making ice cream until you run out of ice cubes and rock salt. There is no need to freeze anything.

I have it and it does work well IF the base is very very chilled before you place it in the frozen unit. Also you can't have a warm kitchen. So in Summer, when you usually want to make icecream, you need to find a place in your kitchen that is quite cool. The unit/bucket thaws out pretty quickly. You then take the icecream and place it in the freezer to cure. You can also eat it immediately as soft serve. I got mine free with my mixer as a bonus on Mother's Day during a sale a few years ago. I wouldn't have spent the $100 they were asking otherwise. If you really plan on making much icecream you need to get a real freezer. c

I really like Alton Browns Serious Vanilla Ice cream. I've used Brown Sugar Rum Peach Jam in place of the preserves..No the ice cream doesn't taste like it has peach anything in it...it just gives it that je ne sais quoi... I've made this one in the KA bowl too Chocolate Coconut Milk Ice Cream she also has a Pumpkin one I want to try. You could sub cream or half n half for the coconut milk. My kids don't really like ice creams with alot of cream..they prefer it's texture, mouth feel like store bought..They don't appreciate the mouth feel of frozen cream!!!!! I find it delish and appreciate it greatly!!! And because it's so rich, much less satisfies me.

I purchased a Cuisinart 2 qt. and love it. I have checked around and found that Sam's and Costco have the best price for the 2 qt. I make a special tropical fruit ice cream and have been sharing 1qt. with family and friends (1 at a time). The other 1qt. I keep for myself. The ice cream that I make is rarely found sold in stores. If I had the money, I would have purchased a bigger one. In other words, homemade ice cream is always so much tastier and fresher than store bought that you wouldn't have any trouble making it in large quantity.

Have you ever had or used this type of ice cream freezer? The ones I've used make the ice cream about as thick as soft-serve, and if you want it harder, you have to freeze awhile longer, in another container, after it reaches the soft-serve stage. It sounds like you had more liquid than what a recipe for this machine can use, and that's why it didn't get frozen. I make my ice cream mixture ahead of time and leave it in a stainless steel bowl/container in the freezer until ice crystals begin to form on the edge of the mixture to make sure it's as cold as possible. I also freeze the dasher. This will help it freeze a little faster. To rescue the peaches, I would make this filling recipe and use it as a dessert served with granola on the top or as a topping for ice cream. The peach gelatin powder (JELL-O and Great Value brand at Wal-Mart will also work) in the recipe is a flavor enhancer (especially good if the peaches don't have a lot of flavor) and the recipe won't work well without it. 1 c. water 3/4-1 c. sugar (use lesser amount if peaches are really sweet) 3 T. cornstarch 3 T. peach gelatin powder (use the regular JELL-O, not sugar-free) 4-6 peaches (depends on how large they are, but almost any number of peaches will work - if you have fewer peaches, just make a half-recipe) Cook water, sugar, and cornstarch in a pan until thickened. Add peach gelatin, stir in well. Add sliced peaches to this hot mixture. Cool until lukewarm, or refrigerate, before serving. (NOTE: If the peach slices are really large, you can cut them into smaller bite-size segments. I also like to use coconut palm sugar for a darker, almost caramel-like flavor, while using white granulated sugar makes a pretty lite pink/peach colored filling. For some reason, the old-fashioned crank ones didn't even enter my mind. I'm gravitating towards that option. It seems like the best for our intended use. When I search for ice cream makers, the smaller ones seem to only show up. Great idea, dcarch!

I still think I might get the KA just to have if I want to make a smaller batch. The Cusinart seems really pricey as I'm shopping around. Good thing you got it on sale, Lars!
