Kitchen Aid Attachments..whats your fav

Hubby asked if I would like a couple of attachments as I don not have any...thought Id get a idea of what seems to be most popular and of course often used. I like the new Cheese Grater attachment and the Ice cream and Pasta but truthfully I dont know how much fresh pasta Id actually make and the same goes for ice cream..It would probably be a novelty in this house hmmmmmm....Help with suggestions

The only attachment I use often enough to warrant having it is the meat grinder. I often grind my own meat and I also make sausage. It's particularly good if you have a piece of beef in the freezer that has past it's prime for grilling or roasting.

If you go for the pasta attachment get the stainless steel roller not the extruder. The extruder is a PIA in my opinion.

I always wondered what the heck was the difference between the pasta roller and the pasta maker. So I want the roller and not the maker Sharon?
I would also like the meat grinder. However, what I would like the most is an extra bowl!

Amen to that, Dawn. Shade cloth is on my 'must have' list for next year also. I haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to put up the supports for it, since we'll be using cattle panels, but I know I'm going to have it. One thing I did find is that, if you order the precut material, you can get it all stitched, taped, and the grommets in place, ready to go, for a fraction of the cost of a piece that you have cut to size. A 10' x 12' precut size in white 50% shade is $50 from the Greenhouse Megastore. A custom-cut 4' x 16' (to fit the cattle panel length) one in the same material is $53 for half the amount of fabric. I'll attach the link. Any of the other sites I found had considerably higher prices. I decided on white because of the cooling effect it provides. It also comes in black, beige, and a pricey big (24' x 36') green one for $200. I wouldn't want to try to suspend something of that size over the garden. It could end up being a nightmare and require a lot of support. But whichever one I get, I will be getting one. I don't know exactly how that price compares, but I looked at some that Lowe's had and did not buy it because of the high price. I haven't looked for any local outlets for it in OK, and I have no idea what the shipping cost would be for a shade of that size. I'm sure that people will be concerned about the durability of the cloth, since it's a big expense if it's only for one season. I don't know what brand it is, but my parents bought a bunch of it to go over their patio trellis. They took it down each winter because of the snow, but they have been using the same one for roughly 20 years. And just think how nice it would be to go work in the garden if there's a shade cloth in place! Here's an idea, for those of you who go to any of the nurseries in your area. You might ask them where they get their shade cloth. It might be ordered in, or it's just possible that there's a local supplier. Pat Here is a link that might be useful: Shade cloth ordering site

These are clay figures from Lucknow in India that belonged to my late father. They are displayed on a (closed) portable writing desk dating to the War Between the States, circa 1865. Two small oil paintings from Australia are behind the console table, which is wicker woven to look like a fabric skirt. The taller figures are Chinese and the silver is a Sheffield loving cup I had "planted" with a very realistic orchid. This table is in a small stair hall that leads to the library. I love to bring things for my house back from our travels, and luckily, so did my parents!

Thanks, Snidely..but she did state that he had a few to many of the yummy apple beers... And many I know have that as a trigger to their gout..well to many beers in a short amount of time...another friend is Mt. Dew...all it takes is one..and off goes the pain and swelling for him..and a good many days at that. OF, glad to hear you got some beach time in. Raven, good food and good company..great way to spend an evening. Chicken's are on the grill..I can't wait to start smelling them. Cake has been frosted and filled and is chilling. Lemonade concentrate is cooling. Still haven't decided on risiotto or potatoes. Ran over to the new house with Lisa to paint the second coat on the areas we scraped, primed and painted yesterday. Looks good. Doing the usual Sunday laundry too. Next step, head to the kitchen to make the slaw..

Do you have a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer?
Q

As an unrepentant kitchen gadget person, I tried to tell myself life wasn't worth living without a Kitchen-Aid. Years ago I had a Sunbeam stand mixer which went to appliance heaven after a horrible kitchen accident, and frankly, it was a blessing it went. It never was any good at yeast breads, which is what I purchased it for. After I won an International Recipe Contest for low-glycemic recipes and a nice cash prize, I kept looking at KA mixers to blow the winnings on. All the lovely colors - what's not to love. Then I was watching Emeril Lagassee one day on TV. His comment about how many KA mixers they burned up in the kitchen made me face reality - not that I shouldn't buy one, but that I really didn't need one. I do just fine with a hand-held electric mixer (like rhizo). My favorite mixers are a rotary OXO mixer (hand-powered) and a Danish Dough Whisk. I can whip egg whites faster in a stainless steel bowl with a whisk than the mixer. As a foods judge at fairs, I found when the popularity of Kitchen-Aid mixers went up, the quality of the baked goods went down substantially. They are great for creaming fat/sugar, but too many people over-mix quick breads, cakes, and other baked goods that don't require a lot of gluten-development. They were full of tunnels and holes, and had tough crust and crumb. Stand mixers are easy to use, but also easy to OVER use. Batters are really best mixed with a Danish Dough Whisk, not an electric mixer of any kind, taking care not to over-develop gluten. Even yeast breads are compromised because the KA tends to aerate the dough too much. A Zojirushi Bread Machine has been developed for making yeast breads, and has been shown, through side-by-side tests, to be superior to stand mixers. King Arthur Flour uses Zojirushi Bread Machines for making bread dough in their test kitchens. -Grainlady

I only have the meat grinder/pasta maker, that's what it says on the box. and sausage stuffer. I would like another bowl too. I have the Cuisinart ice cream maker, so I don't need that. I probably don't NEED anything!

Good topic- A friend and I were shopping on Saturday for a group gift for a bridal shower. The bride registered at Macy's for lots of kitchen stuff- a bad idea if you have BB&B as an alternative. (FYI-refunds and exchanges on a registry are easier there)
Anyway she wanted the KA pasta, ice cream maker and meat grinder attachments. Problem was Macy's only had one of those in stock. I thought the ice cream maker was pricey compared to the Cuisinart, which I barely use now. The gift ended up being 3 place settings of her everyday china and the cheapest KA attachment. I was truly surprised at the cost of the KA items. I'm in agreement, an extra bowl is the best accessory!

Sherry the stainless steel roller is the one to get if you want the KA attachment. The useless one, IMHO, is the the plastic ones that come with the meat grinder/pasta maker. The meat grinder is great just not the pasta parts.

To be honest though, I prefer my hand crank pasta maker even to the stainless steel pasta roller for the KA.
