Instead of replacing the pedestal sink with a vanity, one idea is get a beveled oval mirror that is a medicine cabinet with storage - I have one in my powder room which has a pedestal sink.

Some other ideas: adding beadboard, replacing the light and sink fixture, and adding a snazzy new mirror, a glass shelf with some candles and some artwork for the wall? Something like this...

What would you say your style is? The vanities that you have chosen look fairly traditional. Is that the look you are going for?

I like all the vanities that you posted. Another option instead of wallpaper is to stencil your walls with paint to get a wallpaper effect. If you search on this site for stencils you'll find some posts that can help.

OMG -- we've bought two of those houses. You have my sympathy and encouragement. It gets so much better.

I would replace the toilet rather than the sink. A powder room is the one place where the appearance of a toilet matters to guests -- make it look nice. That toilet is builder basic and looks tired and a bit too basic next to the pedestal sink. It wont look better when you do the rest of the room.

The pedestal sink looks nice -- you just need a storage solution and the hidden medicine cabinet can take care of most of it for you. It could be behind a mirror or even a piece of framed art. You could also put in a train rack for towels.

Take down the towel bar before you do any wall treatment. If you use a train rack, you might not need a ring or bar. If you want something more, I'd be inclined to use a hook or look for something unexpected (I use a quilt rack for towels in my master bath).

Depending on what else you have or want to have in your house, you could easily do the beadboard, a tile wainscot, paint, stencil or even wallpaper. Wallpaper is just starting to come back and the only things I've seen that I like as uber expensive, so when we just redid a half bath, I smoothed the bare walls and painted. Never underestimate the impact of a great wall color setting off pretty white fixtures.

Half baths are so quick and gratifying as projects go. The can get you energized for more. Enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have a difficult time describing my style. I've done those style quizzes and most times comes back traditional or transitional. I'm not sure if a medicine cabinet would work. I'll have to check with my husband as we will do most of the work ourselves. I really only need storage for extra tp and possibly a bottle of spray. This is the main bathroom for guests. this might be a silly question, but as a guest, would you assume there is extra tp behind a piece of art or in a medicine cabinet. I've never really thought of those options, considered doing the vanity or a very slim table with a pretty basket as options as well.

I really like that mirror pipdog and the swing arms for towels. I also like the idea of the train rack, could double as a shelf in this small bathroom. I'm partially to doing wallpaper in this room. I think I can have some fun with it. I agree the toilet likely should go, now that you say it's tired looking, I tend to agree. Would you stay in the same color family? lascatx, I'm hoping this half bath gets finished and really energizes my husband. He does beautiful work but also works long hours at his business. So he tends to tear things out and start a project but then takes forever to finish! It drives me nuts. Hoping to do this one room at a time and he sees the beautiful end product and will be motivated to continue through the rest of our home:)

It looks like you could use a stencil and metallic paint to get the same effect as the wallpaper.

I grew up with vanity sinks (Europe), so once I saw the first vanity/cabinet, I was sold on it. Never understood why pedestal sinks became popular here. My reasons are storage, not to mention that I hated cleaning floors around a pedestal sink and cleaning the pedestal itself. That's why most sinks are wall mounted now and toilets, too, e.g.:

For the wall treatment where you were wondering about the wall paper. You could do that with paint and a stencil if you wanted to put in the time. Wallpaper would probably be quicker, although paint might be better since if you tire on it you just paint over it.

I agree with the vessel sinks. They look cool but aren't terribly practical. The vanities I posted are all 26 inches.

I like the vanities posted, I think you lose the bit of area around the sink with the second (round) one but I do like the look with the mirror and sconces over it, and I bet you can achieve a look very close to the wallpaper pic with a stencil. Have fun, that's going to be a great looking room when you're done!

Great job on removing the previous wallpaper!! My last house was like that and that is a tedious job scraping it all off!!

What colors do you have outside of this powder room? You might want to coordinate with the hallway outside of the room, and that may help steer you in the right direction as far as what color scheme to go with.

To select wallpaper options, try going to a local store that has lots of wallpaper books. (I just did a successful wallpaper search for a room that I am doing at my local Sherwin Williams store. They had TONS of books to look through.) If you find a few paper patterns that you like, check the books out for a few days and bring them home. Prop the books up against the walls in your powder room to help you visualize what it would like with your lighting.

Also another option is to either do a wainscoting on the lower half of the wall and do wallpaper on the upper half. If wainscoting is not your thing, you could do a simple chair rail - paint the lower half a white or other neutral color, and the upper half of the wall could have the wallpaper. This helps break up the monotony of a pattern and keeps the lines calm. I did that once in a powder room in my last house...the wallpaper pattern I chose was on the "busy" side, but it looked fabulous on the upper part of the wall with a solid coordinating color painted below it.

My personal opinion is that LESS IS MORE in powder rooms because they tend to be small spaces. I like your ideas about a sconce or maybe a simple shelf. For TP storage, sometimes baskets are nice too! Keep us posted on your decision-making process!!

You've received some great ideas, and I'm only here to make the comment that of all the things you're considering, if it were mine, I'd save replacing the toilet til last (if done at all). The reason is that it's not interfering with anything you have planned, and once you've made all the other changes, you may find it really looks completely ok to you--maybe just needs the covers for the floor bolts and a trash container (or perhaps the new vanity) to be placed so as to block the view of the toilet's water hose below. If you're redoing a whole house, some things just aren't economically feasible IMHO, unless something's really bugging you. (This said by someone who's changed virtually every light fixture and replaced almost all the sinks and all the toilets in her house---but the toilets had round seats, and round seats bug me.) :-)

That is a really nice vanity rufinorox, would you mind posting where you purchased it. We are going down to our local home show this weekend and hoping for some additional ideas. To answer the question about the colors in the rest of my home, we have a lot of neutral colors going on. This powder room is right off of my foyer/great room, they are currently painted interactive cream and tatami tan. I hate them! another costly mistake that wasn't researched prior to completing. I am looking to repaint that area as well, i'm sure you'll see a post in the future for help on that area!

I do really like the idea of the wainscoting as I do like some busier wallpapers and that would be nice to break it up. Once I pick the vanity and narrow down the wallpaper, I'll be back to get some additional suggestions on the mirror and lighting. I appreciate everyones input so far! This is a truly talented group. I have my toilet paper in a basket on the back of the toilet. I know; some folks hate the TP being visible...but when I'm a guest and need to replace the roll, I always hesitate a moment before opening the cabinet. Even when necessary, it still feels like snooping to me. Thus, mine is out in the open.

I like both the vanities you posted, as well as rufinorox's! After you choose new lighting and faucet, what about replacing just the toilet handle? You could do a dual flush button, or a lever in a coordinating metal finish, for less money and less work than replacing the whole stool. A new seat might be an option, too, if yours looks tired. I actually prefer round seat toilets.

I found another pic of the 2nd vanity on houzz and I think it's a better picture of the vanity. I'm sold on it and it's very reasonably priced. So that will be my first purchase. It has a cream top with a white undermount sink. If I replace the toilet, would I stay in the bone color family even with the white sink or should the toilet match the sink?

Here's my basic take on the TP in a powder room. When you are cleaning it up for guests that are coming, put a full roll on the spool. Take the 1/2 or less roll and put it in your bathroom. Just make it a habit that the roll in there is always close to full.

My personal opinion on guest bathrooms is that it is a very small space and a place where you can have a "surprise" for your guests. Do something over the top in there.
