dish drain -- do you have one?

We pretty much always have dishes draining next to our sink. As would be expected, the beautiful finished-kitchen photos don't show dish drains. But do you all have them? I ask because we're planning on a wood countertop, and I suspect having a dish drain sitting on top of it all the time might be a problem. I'd like to think that I'll be less of a slob once we have a beautiful, new kitchen, but as I'm a realist, I suspect that I'd be the same woman-of-relaxed-standards that I've always been.

So, do you ALWAYS have dishes draining? And, if so, and If you have a wood countertop, is the ever-present dish drain a problem? And, for those of you who are much neater than I am -- do you really dry your dishes and put them away after every single meal? I'm looking for a reality check here. Thanks in advance.
