A foodie fun and artistic day!

So I had the day off today and took myself off on a little excursion to the "big" city - Raleigh, but first, Chapel Hill.

First stop: Whole Foods, where I got Yukon Gold potatoes, romaine, Pink Lady apples, and lemons; then onto the bulk bins where I got some nuts, bulghur, oat bran, and oats; onto feta cheese, maple turkey sausage links, and some turkey thighs and wings which were on sale.

Second stop was unplanned but I couldn't help myself: my favorite fabric shop has moved from Carrboro to Chapel Hill, just down from Whole Foods.....how convenient!

Third stop: a planned early lunch at the Mediterranean Deli in Chapel Hill - amazing place! I had stuffed grape leaves, artichoke moussaka, Moroccan Couscous salad, kibbeh, pita bread fresh from their bakery, and all the olives, dill pickles, and tzatziki I could eat. I'm still stuffed!

Fourth stop: Penzey's - at last! Had trouble getting there, but finally found my way. I got some items for gifts: Mural of Flavor, Shallot Pepper, Baking Spice, Sandwich Sprinkle, Sunny Spain, and for me, whole nutmeg and whole allspice.

Fifth stop: the Norman Rockwell exhibit at our NC Museum of Art outside Raleigh. It was wonderful!! Amazing to see the images and Post covers that I grew up with framed and on exhibit where you can get really close and see every brush stroke.

Tomorrow Mom and I brave a trip to the new Tanger Outlets - yikes!

Teresa - who is now off to google a recipe for that couscous salad!

Sounds like my kind of day! I actually saw that Rockwell exhibit on it's travels around....can't remember where...but it was nice wasn't it?

What a perfect day! I would have loved it.

Hope you find everything you are shopping for and don't have to wait in long lines, but I'm sure it will be a fun day for your Mom too.

Thanks all, we had a good day. DD's due date is August 9th the shower is June 28th. And it's a boy! About the edible images, the sales lady wasn't that helpful, but the man in line behind me was! He uses them all the time and gave me some hints. Get your icing as smooth as possible, then lightly mist the icing, fondant or whatever you're using with water, then apply the image. Obviously I didn't have my icing smooth but I did mist it, I was in a hurry to see if it was the look we were going for, so I was not overly careful and just slapped it on which resulted in air bubbles, and when I tried to fix them I tore the images. Not pretty but tasty! So if you're careful and take your time they should be fine. He also said you can do them days in advance, they dry and the images meld with the icing with no bleeding Di

Amex has always charged more than the other cc companies. Others have already pointed out that those mall cc purchases really hit small businesses hard. We have customers that are kind enough to be aware of that and write checks or use their debit card, or even, believe it or not, pay in cash. A lot of you have mentioned Costco. I've never shopped at one because they're just not convenient to me, but I used to shop at Sam's. I quit doing that years ago because they had an annual fee, and I didn't feel like I was saving enough to make up for that annual fee. Most of what I got at Sams I could buy as a loss leader at a regular grocery store. I've also not found coupons to be very useful, because they're rarely for real food, just processed food. After seeing several stories on the news, and listening to co-workers, I broke down and bought a Sunday paper several weeks ago for the coupons. Boy, was I disappointed. I spent $2.00 on the paper, and maybe found that much worth in coupons that I might use, (which I have to admit I've forgotten about), and then I had all this mess of paper to deal with. Micucci's is amazing. My mom has been going there forever. Sun Market is on Congress st. Hmmm my direction giving skills might leave something to be desired... Sort of near the museum and MECA. Do you know where June Fitzpatrick's smaller gallery was? It's around the corner from there. I haven't been to LeRoux - though I wonder if that is the place my mom has mentioned. Is it a restaurant supply place? I will keep an eye out for the Maine Chef sauces. The yuzu kosho sauce I got is delicious! Tangy spicy! As far as the storm I was stocked up but we didn't get hit to badly. Though it was very windy! I was snowshoeing with my puppy and suddenly realized he had run home. Too much for him and not much is! Jackson or Jackman? I am also on the way if you are going up Rt 201 to Jackman. Let me know if you are going through. I haven't seen moose meat for sale - usually if you like game meat hunters will provide (if they like you). A friend's 12 year old got a moose a few years ago. It was bigger than him.

I've loved reading this thread - so many great things. I received a wonderful Masala Dabba from my son and DIL with a spoon for each cup and a large capacity. I'm so happy not to have to search for all the spices used together in Indian dishes. You would understand if you saw how my spices are crammed here and there. Oh to have a whole divided drawer like Cathy's. Max gave me the new Suvir Saran cookbook "American Masala". I've just begun to look at it and I'm looking forward to trying some new to me Indian dishes. From my DIL's parents a fun bag of gourmet food items, sun dried tomatoes, jasmine rice in an airtight glass jar, a box of Gnocchi and much more. And a gift that will go on giving - from my DIL"S brother, a bag of frozen homemade Gnocchi and a LESSON on how to make them. His Gnocchi are really wonderful, I'm so excited about learning to do it from him. He has a handmade board from his Grandfather - I hope that's not his secret to success because I can't get a board like that. I'll take my camera when I go to learn from him. Lee

Ooooh that Southern Season store. Major jealous, Teresa! I still have stuff from there that I use. That was a great (but hot) day we had during Paney Camp.

That sounds like great fun! Sometimes I combine trips to Penzey's and Whole Foods, since they're about a mile apart. I can lose control in the bulk bin area at WF. The other day I was cleaning out my freezer, pulling bags of assorted grains out, and wondering when I bought that and what it was, lol. I need to learn to not only put the number on the tag, but the name of the product I'm buying so the brainless idiot (me) will know what it is later.

I guess you had a cooler with you?

Fun overload Teresa!! I am jealous. You bought all my favorite foods and ATE all my favorite foods. I was totally drooling yesterday at the Mediterannean deli at the farm market. But I can't afford to buy any of the stuff, I just have to make mental notes and make the stuff myself. I need to get bulghur wheat. My last batch went bad on me . . . bugs!

Well, Mom just called to say she has heard horrendous things about parking at the Tanger Outlets and she doesn't think we should go. I'm in perfect agreement after seeing the lots jam-packed full on my drive home yesterday.

Cathy, I really had planned to go to Southern Season for two items I wanted to get, then forgot about going until I was almost at the Deli.

Sally, yes, I was organized enough to take the cooler with some ice packs. Fixed the chicken maple link sausage for breakfast today - quite good and no fat to speak off.

Lpink, I put all the grains in my freezer until I'm ready to use them. I want to try a granola recipe that I might make for the farmers' market. I don't like to sell anything that I haven't tasted. The chipped beef that I bought at the RTM when we were there was put on ice in my tote bag and survived the long train ride just fine. I love that stuff!

What a fun day!! Enjoy all your purchases!

We always drive to San Marcos (three hours each way) on Black Friday and shop the Tanger and Premium outlet malls, two huge malls which are across the street from each other. Yeah, the parking can get hairy but we always have a fun day. You should go, just be prepared to be patient! LOL

I was preparing for our Annual Off-Site Christmas Shopping Trip and saw that Mall of Georgia has free online parking reservations!

that sounds like a great day, Teresa, but I'm with your Mom on the outlet shopping. My family knows that if I don't have a gift for you before Thanksgiving, you're probably not getting one.

elery did all shopping for his grandkids on-line, we never did go shopping!

Sounds like a perfect day Teresa ! I would have loved to see the Norman Rockwell collection. I bet it was special.

Think I'm about due for a trip cross the border to Penzey's....after the holidays!

I would have loved to have been with you every step of the way, including the fabroc store! TThere really aren;t any great ones out here in the sticks, I have to go closer to Philly to find anyting beyond what JoAnne carries. I am a "seasonal" rank beginner quilter, and the bug usually hits as I am packing away the Christmas ornaments.

Glad you got to see the Rockwell exhbit - it is fantastic!

And I've never heard of Southern Season - what sort of stuff do they have?

Alexa, A Southern Season is a fantastic "toy" store for foodies! Lots of gourmet foods, big coffee and tea section, big wine section, gorgeous tabletop area, food to go area including deli, bakery, and cheese, gadgets galore, nice area for our local NC products, gift baskets and much more.

We went there during Paney Camp and I think our campers were suitably impressed. The Weathervane restaurant is excellent!

My sister took me to A Southern Season the last time I visited her in Raleigh. Love that store. We had Sunday brunch at the restaurant - really nice!
