What is the food gadget?

Or at least I presume it is a food thingy.... Not completely sure. But if someone can ID it for me I would really appreciate it! It has silver hallmarks but beyond that I have no idea.....

I believe that is a candle snuffer.

I agree; the top part is representative of a flame.

Ohiomom, my grandma's apple masher is, I think, an early kind of food mill. It's got a metal cone with holes in it, a stand for the cone, and a wooden pestle designed to fit in the cone. You quarter the apples, cutting out the cores but not bothering to skin them; cook the apples till soft, put a bowl under the cone, dump the apples in the cone, and use the pestle to force the cooked apples through the holes. The apple sauce slides down the cone and into the bowl. The skins are left in the cone, and you scrape those out and do another batch. Then you taste test the applesauce and sweeten/add cinnamon as you prefer, and either can or freeze. It also works with tomatoes for making tomato sauce, but you have to cook the sauce down afterwards to reduce the liquid. If you google "apple masher" or "apple saucer" you can find them on antique sites. I print out recipes from on line all the time, but any drop of water will make the ink from the inkjet run and make a total mess of the recipe. So then it dawned on me. I have a clear plastic clipboard from staples. I clip the recipe wrong side down on the clipboard. Then I flip it over. I can read the recipe through the clear plastic, the plastic protects the paper and is easy to clean, and the clipper part holds the recipe up at an angle so it's easier to read. I love it when things work out like that!

It's a really useful gadget! Just this last week I made two batches of Date Nut Pinwheel Cookies, and used it for processing the dates into bits so it would cook down quickly. It was also used for pulverizing cookies into crumbs for truffles, and I made fresh bread crumbs, combined with cold butter which I put in the freezer to use at a later time. I'm making pizza later this week and always use it for my dough, along with the crust I use for pie or tarts. I also grate parmesan and other cheeses, make dressing and chop vegs like broccoli, where I don't really care what size it all turns out. It's wonderful for chopping nuts, although I usually also put those through a strainer to get rid of the nut dust. It's been used to turn sugar into fine granulated sugar, and I always grind oatmeal into coarse flour before adding it to cookies or pancakes. I think it's best for things you really want to shred, pulverize, emulsify or turn into dough. Now that I've had one, I'd never be without it and would replace it in a heartbeat.

This is an interesting thread. My favorite kitchens items are large Pyrex measuring cups (4 and 8 cup size)to use as mixing bowels---you have a handle to steady them. Next is the APPLE CORER that cuts the apple into 8 wedges and the center core is separate. These can be bought at the grocery store or Target. Next is a flexible little nozzle you screw onto the end of your kitchen faucet. You can turn it in many angles to direct the water to different areas of your sink. Much handier than pulling out the sprayer. I don't know where my daughter bought it. HD bought one of those onion choppers but the many little square holes are hard to clean. The onion sticks to it--takes longer to clean than to chop the old fashion way.

I don't think it is a snuffer as silver conducts heat and if you hold it while snuffing...ouchy!

It almost looks like spreader but too small for that.

It's much too small to be a snuffer.

It fits a finger. I suppose you can slip it on a finger to cut something.

I have never seen one like this.

PK: they were made in Silver.
While into Collectibles, I've seen all types, Animals,
Angels, Christmas, You name it.

Are there any traces of Soot, on the inside of the cup ?
Rub a white cloth around the inside.
Is it solid Sterling ???

If it is a Snuffer it was probably made in England.

They did Snuffers in Silver. It is probably late 1800's ?

Google, English Hallmarks, maybe you can find the origin.

Country of origin would help....what do the marks indicate?
I am thinking a cheese tryer....used to cut a wedge from a wheel of cheese.

Thanks for all the ideas. I don't think it is a snuffer, but that gave me an idea. Could it be a decoration to put on top of a candle when it isn't burning? It does look like a flame, no there isn't any soot residue on the inside. It would fit on a finger, but you wouldn;t have a lot of control over it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one stumped by this one... more research later this morning.

I polished is up, and what looked like a hallmark was tarnish. It is marked Sterling, and I'm sure it is old. What do you think about the following photos?

Now that's a new one to me! Don't think I have ever seen one of those.....candle toppers? But it looks sort of right, Alexa.
