Sounds strange but my toliet is sinking...

Hello Everyone!

I know this sounds strange but my toliet in my powder room is sinking. I just noticed it tonight that there was like black stuff around the back of it and when i wiped the floor it came off and all around the toliet is black. I am thinking the potty and everything (sink too) have to come out and a new subfloor put in.

I am sick over this. What could it be?

We just went through this. We had to gut our bathroom at a rental property because the joists below the bath had become rotted due to water damage. The subfloor had to come out, joists replaced, all new fixtures installed, new flooring, etc. Don't replace the floor with laminate wood flooring though. We did and it compacted under the weight of the toilet and the seal became broken. Now we get to replace the flooring all over again. So much for a good deal on the floating floor system! lol!

Check the floor joists from the basement or crawlspace for water damage. I hope your problem isn't as bad as ours was. Good luck!

We have laminate floating floor in bathroom and never a problem. Toilet was tightened down with weight on it so it cannot compact the floor.

It sounds to me like there's some obstruction in the vent leading off of that drain. The gurgling sound may not have been noticeable before because the old trap had built-up crud in it that either muffled the sound or slowed the escape of air so that you didn't hear a gurgle. Is this bathroom on the upper floor of your house, or in a single story house? If so, look up on your roof. If you see the vent pipe extending through the roof directly above the sink area in your bathroom, check it for any sort of visible clog that would prevent it from working properly. If you can't see anything, then you might try snaking the vent line to clear any any obstruction further down the line. Short lengths of manual plumbing snake are available at your local home center or hardware store. If you don't see a vent pipe protruding through the roof in the general area above the sink, your house may have vent lines that are connected to a central vent stack (more common on older or higher-end construction), or if the bathroom was added by a previous owner, it's possible that it wasn't properly vented at all. Studor vents aren't approved by the plumbing codes in all localities, or for all applications, but this type of vent is a possible solution if your sink isn't already properly vented. Your plumber should certainly know if a Studor vent is proper solution and complies with local plumbing codes. If there is a roof vent, though -- check it for obstructions first. Clearing a vent obstruction would be the easiest and cheapest fix.

Those cabinets are stunning! But there's definitely more than 3 inches to the ceiling. I'm taking one cabinet (and over the fridge) that are already 6" from the ceiling all the way up, then the lower ones are going to end 6" from the ceiling. I won't worry about what's enclosed, and I'm hoping that 6" will be enough (esp. with crown angled out) to get up there and dust or even get the vacuum hose (if it's long enough) up there occasionally. Mockup (sitting slightly behind cabinet for pic, but it will be stacked flush and come all the way up to current top of corner cabinet, which will go all the way to ceiling) This one (same piece) is being held in place by tape so it's really where it's supposed to be, minus the bead at the joint. Better pic of how far it is from ceiling. I don't know when we'll actually get this done - too many other priorities now that the weather's nice)

The cross bar (blocking???) is at 50" so that would be the max height of the top drawer. Two of my IKEA drawers add up to around 13" so I think I could just squeeze them in with an inch or two above the counter for clearance. I have sort of changed my mind about the dish drawer because of dampness and because IÂd probably leave it open all the time but the sink stopper and hand lotion sound promising. I think IÂd get much more use out of the drawers than a niche IÂll have to keep organized but I could put a small one above the drawers. We plan to stay here until this kitchen falls apart so resale isnÂt a factor. The wall was intended to have rails and racks for utensils and the only difference is theyÂll have to be off to the right now instead of centered but I donÂt think it will look too bad with them on 2/3 of the wall. Unfortunately, I canÂt balance it out with more drawers on the other side without making my husband tear down the cabinets and drywall he just installed to relocate the ductwork I told him not to mess with a month ago. IÂd have to finish the kitchen myself at that point. LOL

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear that others think it will be okay! The plumber is coming tomorrow and I was wondering if I should run out in the morning and find a different faucet. I wasn't worried about it until DH came home from work and made the comment that he thought that we would have a darker sink. Island: We replaced all of the floors when we bought the house 7 years ago, so we are just sticking with what we already have. It's fairly neutral, but has a pinkish undertone (I know - it doesn't sound that pretty!) It's the same tile through our entry and dining room too and it meets up with our fireplace/hearth that is pinkish/gray brick. Hendricus, I believe our flooring must have been subpar because I assure you it certainly has compacted. Unfortunately for us, not all flooring is made equal. I certainly wouldn't be taking out a new floor if there was not a problem.

I think anyone who uses anything but tile or at least vinyl in a bathroom is certifiable....hardwood/laminate et al, anything that has cracks or joins that are not absolutely waterproof is entering a world of pain....not to mention, when, err we boys use the toilet and miss, any liquid that gets into the cracks is there forever and things become very stinky...

Problems with flooring compressing is why you also don't want your laminate/hardwood extending under your kitchen cabinets, (I even wonder about fridges) best you use plywood under the cabinet of an equal thickness then extend it just to where the kickpanel clips on, then cabinets have a firm footing...

Does sound like water damage. (sinking floor)

I kind of like the Australian bathroom system. Concrete subfloor, or compressed (waterproof) cement fibre....then a decorative flooring over top, floor incorporates a drain for spills/overflows (baths and sinks don't tend to have overflows incorporated, which would be nice though)
