Wow, you bathroom sounds freakishly like ours! We are finishing up our little 1/2 bath re-do and we chose a vanity. It is smaller than the 24" vanity it replaced, but it is taller (36"h vs. 30"h) and it is more shallow (about 6" more shallow than before). It's just a standard Ikea Lillangen vanity. We will store basics in there, but the one shelf it comes with can't be used due to our plumbing. Oh well. Pedestals are nice looking, but they really don't offer any storage. If you are not hurting for storage (we certainly are!), they are a great alternative. Good luck!

Thank you all for your suggestions and pictures. billl - good point about the dust collecting strips - I agree either against the wall or room for cleaning between. enduring - thanks for the link, although I think my architects violated most of the suggestions - they seem to be more form over function - but it's only the powder room - our bathrooms were designed and built in 1939 - so of course they violate most of the suggestions too. Good luck with your reno pricklypearcactus - I'm meeting with the GC and finish carpenter to discuss a built-in. I was thinking if it had 3 drawers and feet instead of the standard cabinet doors, it would look more like furniture even if it is built in. In the case that I go with RH - how do you like the quality? kfhl - thank you so much for pointing out the baseboard issue. I completely forgot that. mydreamhome - it's a renovation, but we're bumping into what was our original attached garage. Unfortunately the plumbing is already installed. But, give that the door hinge is on the opposite side of your hinge, I think you'll never see in the room from the entry - only from the mud room. nini - lovely vanity and I absolutely love the black granite w/white bowl look - but it would end up being the fanciest piece of furniture in our entire house :) Does the black granite show a lot of waterspots?

Too much going on?? A floating vanity is simply a shorter vanity, with no legs and hung on the wall ... so not much more going on than what you would have with a regular vanity ... actually there is less going on, since floating vanities are visually lighter. I agree with rockybird. I just remodeled 3 bathrooms and did floating vanities in all of them. I used intricate tile in the bathrooms and wanted to keep the vanities simple and airy. I have a newer Spanish style house and the floating vanities fit the bathrooms perfectly, so it doesn't have to be a MCM house like rockybirds's or a modern house. Did you search Houzz photos? Lots of floating vanities with wallpaper.
