I change mine once a year. The light blinks on the front panel to remind me.

I actually have two filters. One on the line in the basement before it goes up to the fridge, and one in the fridge.

I don't know why it would burn out the motor. The motor turns your tray - it doesn't have anything to do with the water, or the purity of it.

Speaking of filters - I change my furnace/AC filter once a month. I buy the cheapest filters. My HVAC guy recommended this. He said it is better on the unit to use the cheap ones and change every 30 days. He also said to avoid the HEPA type filters (we do not have any allergy issues though).

SIL felt the water supply was being restricted due to a dirty filter and this caused the ice maker to be overworked since the water is filtered for the icemaker too. I'm just "embrassed" .... the water coming out of the dispenser has really slowed in the last few weeks and I suppose, if it's slow...so is the water to the icemaker.

I change mine about twice a year. When the first filter needed changing, I ignored it--until the icemaker quit working. Put a new filter in, and have had no problems since. It's a pain, and the filters are expensive, but I guess that's the price we have to pay to have the ice and water dispenser on the door.

We have the blinking light but it averages about a year. We have lots of minerals in our water so it is necessary.

The filters on mine are so expensive - 35 - 40 bucks! Cha-ching!!

I love my ice/water in the door. Best thing ever :)

Huh? I didn't know there was a filter. Where should I look for it?

I change mine when it get's really slow...or the water tastes funny...or after the well folks have been cleaning and messing with the neighborhood system.

Usually works out to 2x a year.

I dont have such a thing, but why not change it when you change your smoke alarm batteries(spring & fall)..then everything would be done at the same time

Plain old garden-variety fridge - no water piped in, no water/ice dispensed out.

It depends on how much water goes through the filter. In a busy houshold with a lot of demand for water and ice, twice a year probably isn't enough. At our house, with just two adults, once a year is plenty.

If you wait overly long, you are not only not benefiting from having a filter, the filter is contributing to the pollution in the water.

We've had ice/water through the door for about 30 years (two different fridge/freezers). I fail to understand why people buy bottled water if they have good *free* drinking water.

When there isn't much water flow in the water dispenser and the cubes are getting hollow or small its time to change the filter. They recommend every 6 months. I try to stretch it if possible. Try ebay for a better price on filters.

no water/ice dispensed here...just an plain fridge.

I don't think mine has a filter. I have to call a repair man for mine or freeze ice manually. My ice maker is leaking something nasty looking in the tray.

I don't like the dispensers in the frig. Refused to buy one with it or an icemaker in it. And it's getting difficult to buy a unit these days without at least an icemaker in it. Don't like the taste of water out of them most of the time and no thanks, I don't want to get used to it after a while. I prefer to go to the faucet. The water sits there in the plastic hose getting the plastic taste, mold and bacteria. No thanks. I'll take it from the sink then. I offended more than one who (and always so proudly) gave me a glass of water from the pus-pump. I take a taste, go to the sink, dump it out, rinse the glass and get some fresh water. And especially got one ticked when I washed the glass. She had just taken it out of the dishwasher too! With crud on it. Ugh. I don't understand people at times.
