free-standing clawfoot tub problem

Hi --

Just put in a new bathroom. Plumbing is already in (the floors are done) -- in the center of the room. I found my dream tub, but the installation instructions state that a wall needs to be there (by the plumbing, at the head of the tub) to hold the pipes in place. My bathroom has no wall there. A kneewall is not an option, nor is moving the plumbing. The tub rim is too narrow to drill holes (other tubs come with these holes already).

My potential solution is to use the ceiling (we're installing a ring for a curtain and shower fixtures) as well as a wall (running parallel to the long part of the tub, about 2 feet away) for stability. My contractor thinks the pipes will be too flimsy and dangerous if we do it that way, and that I need to buy a tub with pre-drilled holes.

Looking for a solution here, assuming the above makes sense. Can the pipes be sturdy without a wall being right there at the head of the tub? Using the ceiling and a wall a couple feet away?

THANKS in advance to all you creative plumbers!
