mock up backsplash feedback needed

Finally decided on my field tile. It's a neutral tumbled marble. The field tile will be layed in a simple straight pattern. Now I'm working on the area behind the cooktop. The field tile for that area will be layed at a diagonal.

Here's a photo of the field tile with a 1x1 glass tile and the 5/8" square grayish taupe tile. The other insert I'm considering is the same tile as the 1x1, but in a 2x2.

The glass inserts and the glass framing tile in a 5/8 x 8" I'm considering are in the Sonoma line- Tantrum (marked on this sheet)

For the framing of the cooktop area I've mocked up the 5/8" square gray/taupe tile in a pattern framing the area. Inside that is the 5/8 x 8" glass tile framing. (Please ignore the color of the mock up. The colors are pretty accurate in the picture of the field tile and inserts above.) This is just to help see the pattern overall. The larger whitish squares are the 2x2 glass tile, the smaller white squares are the same color tile in 1x1. The single small taupish square is the same 5/8" square in the framing and it is also used as an insert in a 4x4 pattern. The glass tiles and inner framing are all the same color.

Here is a pic of the other wall in the kitchen.

So, my concern, as you may have guessed, is whether the pattern of inserts, and the overall design of the cooktop area, is too busy/complicated.

It's a little hard to see all the details in the picture, but the overall effect is really nice. I noticed that two of the 2x2 tiles are on the diagonal (unlike the rest of the accent tiles). Was this on purpose? In the pics the backsplash doesn't look too busy. Are you going to have some accents in the res of the backsplash also that will tie it all together? By the way, the rest of the kitchen is really pretty.

It's so subtle that I don't think it looks too busy at all. Just kind of adds some nice texture to your kitchen. Did you think about trying the framing around the liner in 2x2's? It might give it a little bit more of a substantial feel and balance it out a bit.

I think you're on rack with a light neutral since you already have a lot of dark with the cabs, counters and floors. However I don't know about the strong geometric patterns you posted. Don't think I'd like that with your swirly bold countertops. Don't care for accent pieces either, especially with that countertop. Think they would just compete and distract from the countertop which is clearly the star. I'd wait until the countertops are in and look for something that matches a light shade in the granite. Please keep posting samples. It's always fun to ponder the options!

Thanks prill...I'm leaning towards only doing tile in area to the left of the casing...then in the window area just doing paint and the casing down to the counter. I guess I'll just have to be more dilligent with cleaning. The Reef was the first tile that spoke to me...I really thought I was going to go for a more solid blue, but reef is so much softer....it allows me to play up the color of the walls more...not that I have a lot of walls...And, I found out that my designer can get it for about 12.50/sf where I was quoted around $15/sf.

Someone posted late on my 'critique my layout' thread with lots of cabinets in front of windows pics. Many people suggested a window seat in front of my window. I didn't want that. At one point DH suggested something similar to what caligirl5 posted up thread, except my window is about the same distance from the floor as yours...just below normal table height. I was going to try to get the counter JUST under the window sill. The windows in many other rooms are at that same height. (such is the nature of a brick house, right?) I have a table in front of one of those windows, and my desk in front of another. I think that's a nice height for me to work at doing some things. But I wanted storage. So for me, I opted for cabinets under the window at a lower height. I thought they were 24"h+4.5"toekick. But the KD thought that would be cutting it too close with counter material and uneven floors, etc. so they're 21"h+4.5" toekick, so they'll be 25.5". I'm not sure what I'm going to do on top of them. I may put granite because our slabs were ginormous but we needed two, so I'll just be paying extra fabricating at this point. And with 2cm granite they'll be 26.25". Or, I may get some thick butcher block and get them to be a bit taller. I'll see when they're in. If I leave them lower height, I bet people will end up sitting on them in a pinch. ;) Where is the entrance to the bathroom? And I just noticed that the wall in the window part of the kitchen is a half wall. Any chance it can be moved/removed? Where I'm going with the last question is I was wondering if there's anything that could go on the wall that backs up to the bathroom if the traffic pattern changed. (Could be a horrible idea, just throwing it out there). As I looked at my original layout in my thread, I was reminded that when I moved out my W/D I noticed that I THINK where my high window is in that corner USED to be the door to the breezeway. I knew the door we have in that wall was added after the fact. I keep forgetting to go look outside and look for more evidence of it. Snowsha, I didn't post when you first put up this thread, but I should have then. I would have been the minority voice saying that I liked it. Blue with tan or browns can be so stunning. There's something organic and unusual about it. I liked it then, but thought that maybe I was the only oddball. Well, I liked it then, and I like it now. As you get accustomed to it, you're going to realize that it makes your kitchen unique amongst many others that have a certain sameness to them. I think you'll find that people who come into your house will soon be confirming that in a very positive way. I think your kitchen looks lovely and not in a cookie-cutter way. Hopefully, you will grow to love it as much as your husband. You're a sport to compromise with your DH--especially since it's in the kitchen.

I like what you're doing but it's a bit diffuse. I would like more of a focal point in the middle such as a diamond shape. You already have a diamond shape there of sorts. I would like it more defined and those tiles done in some metal or glass tiles. It will add a bit more punch. It's a bit bland now I think.

Thanks for the feeback so far!

dkichenreno- yes, some of the 2x2s were placed at a diagonal (some 1x1s also). I don't plan on using any other accents on the walls mainly because of the outlet placement, the coffee pot and the canisters. We really tried to fit them in, but it wouldn't work.

remodelfla- seeing if I follow you on the framing-- do you think it would look better to use the 2x2 glass tiles in place of the 5/8 x 8" glass tile on the inside of the taupish tiles in the framing?

blondelle- I understand what you mean about the "diffuseness." .. to many inserts on a small scale.

Anyone have any suggestions to help this or more suggestions?

I think it's pretty! I love the glass tiles and the overall pattern behind the cooktop looks like a starry sky. My only comment is that it might improve the look just a little to have the two diagonal ones in the middle row be 2" instead of 1", but it's hard to say without seeing it.

I meant the 2x2 on the outside of the liner. 2x2's, liner, then diagonal tile with insets.

I agree that the pattern is a bit too diffuse, but I dont have a concrete recommendation to change it. The overall effect *is* very nice, but it seems like you have highlighted a focal point, then taken away from its "pow."

Personally, I'd do something a little more powerful in the center, then have it gradually become less detailed toward the edges. Vague, I know. But I love the tiles you chose!

Can you let us know a little more about what you are going for here? If you can find some examples of backsplashes you like on FKB or google, we can help you get there with the tiles you have selected.

I agree with those who think it needs more impact. The placement of the elements is a bit scattered right now. That could work on a smaller backsplash, but you need more pop for a larger area. If you are going to put in a focal point it should really draw attention.
