New granite has ink-like stains help!

I had granite countertops installed about 2 weeks ago. I thought I inspected them thoroughly, they seemed fine, and I signed the disclaimer. The kitchen was still under construction, and I didn't spend much time looking at the countertops until the work was finished.

Then I noticed about 4 round greenish marks, about 3-4 inches in diameter, in different places. I have a light granite (colonial gold). It looks a little like a highlighter mark, or a faded green magic marker. So it looks pretty yucky on the light granite.

I am freaking out somewhat. I feel like an idiot for not noticing when the granite was installed. I have looked online and some people suggest making a poultice of hydrogen peroxide for ink stains. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there granite specialists who can come to your house and work on stains like this? Is it worth calling the company that installed it, or are all my rights gone since I signed a disclaimer? Any thoughts or advice?

It's worth calling the company that installed it--if they did it, they'll know what it is and that will help you get it out. Even if they didn't, they might be helpful. They might not owe you anything, but good business people will still want you happy.

It's possible other workers on the kitchen are responsible.

And I know someone here had a green stain on granite issue a while back. Searching probably won't work so hopefully one of the stone people will help. Good luck!

Is it possible that another worker put something down that could have left some kind of iron or metal deposit? Greenish tint makes me think of iron coming trhough somehow.

Ok Guys, I went back to the design center today and here are some new choices: Tumbled Marble Subway Tile Emperador Brown: The tumbled marble also comes in 4"X4". OR Tumbled travertine 4"X4" Chocolate color: I emailed the designer to ask of the trvertine came in subway tiles, too. Hopefully, she will get back to me soon. My pics of the floor tile did not come out great this time, but here is is with two different carpet choices (in the design center it was almost identical to the carpet on the right, but in the pic it looks identical to the carpet on the left!): Also, I came across this REALLY pretty mosiac tile (I have NO idea how much any of this costs, I've put in an email to the designer to see!). I was thinking of getting one of the 4"X4" tiles (either the marble or the travertine) as the backsplash and then having them put one of these mosaic tiles centered over the stove cooktop. What do you guys think? Here's a pic of the mosaic tile: If the mosaic is too expensive, then I think I may go with subway tiles for the backsplash. I think the subway tiles would look wierd with the mosaic. Let me know what you guys think! You have been really helpful so far! Thanks so much!

I'd try more alcohol, although I think the finish is some form of varnish/poly. Even if the alcohol causes the ink to bleed through the finish and into the wood, either scraping or sanding the spot is going to be necessary. Using a card scraper (or spokeshave) will remove the stain/wood without pushing it further into the grain like sanding could. However, mastering the technique for using either the card scraper or spokeshave take a bit of practice---and an investment in card/burnisher(how an edge is created on the card scraper) or the spokesshave. Either will be north of $25+. Sanding can be done with a piece of 100 or 120 grit sandpaper helr in your fingers---making sure to not make a hole/groove) then finish sand with 180 grit. Sandpaper can be found at any hardware/home improvement store or Walmart.

Take an exact picture with dimensions, then visit your fabricator's shop. A hundred bucks says your waffles match his vacuum pods, used to secure stone while fabricating on a CNC machine, exactly. Looks like a Morbidelli to me.

From a quick web search: Etch marks are dull spots from acidic or chemical corrosion. Since an etch mark is clear or whitish in color it is often called a "water stain" fueling the myth. It is not caused by water, nothing has absorbed into the marble, nothing is on the marble and it is not a true stain. Etching is physical damage to the marble like a burn. Marble polishing is required to repair an etch mark, but it's a simple DIY process using the Etch Remover / Marble Polisher product. To help avoid etching only use products safe for marble maintenance and minimize contact with acidic foods, drinks and personal products. And one last piece of the puzzle... sealing will not prevent marble etching. Yes, sealers help prevent absorption and staining, but cannot stop the physical surface damage that occurs with etching. ___ I'm not sure if the etch remover products that mention work on both polished and honed marble. But would be worth checking out. ?

Can you post pics?

This could be the result of a number of staining agents, or it could be the stone
itself.... hard to say with out seeing it.....

We had a weird brown mark on our counter and the granite people said it was a defect in the granite (we have light gray/white granite)...but they were able to work with the small blotch and were quite happy to try and do what they could. They covered the brown with a light gray epoxy substance and then they did some other stuff to it. It's not nearly as noticeable but they are not quite done with it.

I think the original company might be able to help you--call them. It's amazing what the fabricators can do to fix chips, cracks, stains, occlusions, etc. I think they are used to that and if you find an experienced fabricator, they are good at problem solving with the stone. They work with it every day!

Don't know if this will help, but I saw a poultice on TOH last wknd. The stone guy mixed baking soda and hydrogen peroxide until there was a spreadable paste (looked like the consistency of thick yogurt). He covered the stain with a thick application of poultice, then covered the poultice with plastic wrap, then sealed the edges of the plastic wrap with blue painters tape. Then he let it sit for several hours.

he must have read my instructions, but substituted baking soda for plaster
of paris and hydrogen peroxide for acetone.....

I GOTTA get that VIDEO DONE!!!!
