Bloom Supermarket

Has anyone been to a Bloom Supermarket and what did you think? I know they are owned by Food Lion and I'm not asking about a Food Lion store, just Bloom. The latest edition of Consumer Reports make them sound most inviting. It claims they have wider aisles than any other market, fewer displays to block traffic, shelves a foot lower than other markets and many other great features.

A Food Lion near my daughter in Frederick, MD was converted to a Bloom. It was all right, certainly head and shoulders above Food Lion, but nothing really set it apart from any other good grocery store.

The store set up was not easier to maneuver, with short aisles running perpendicular or even angled off the main aisles, and there were plenty of displays blocking the checkout area.

It was convenient, we could walk to the store from my daughter's house.

It's nice enough but they have the highest prices too. I do not like their bakery at all and prefer the Publix or Bilo bakery any day. I don't shop there very often, however, they do have a great seafood dept., at least this one does.

"What's with this type of rose that is being sold at supermarkets today?" Cheaper The prices do get raised for Valentines Day, supply and demand and the wrong season for roses to be blooming in. The grocery stores are going to place larger orders way ahead of time, those roses have to be shipped to their distribution center, put on pallets with the other grocery items and trucked to the market. The market has to unpallet and finally those roses are put back in water to be revived. Just like a fresh strawberry grown in the farmers field is nothing like the strawberry one buys in the chain grocery store. Not knocking the grocery business, it just the reality of how things have to be done to bring them to the market by you at a cost we can afford. A florist may send their buyer to meet the plane bringing in the roses, or pick them from the flower market just hours before you purchase them. Best bet is to buy roses when they are blooming locally and purchase other flowers/plants/cakes/chocolates that do not need the holding times.

Some mini's are considered antique....I've actually had good sucess with supermarket roses, right now none of them have blackspot.

yes that is what mini's are SO good for, cheap rose thrills. I bought two minis for less than the price of one regular, both mini climbers which as you know get as big as the next guy.

Our frosts are harder but, I am on very fast draining soil so many live through. Often the leaves will get burned but then it comes back from the roots easily , especially if it is planted under a tree. They easily lived through the frosts in Inner city Austin Texas at my old house, but where I live now just beyond the exurbs in the hills west of there, They will freeze and die during the low 20º's. I cover them when 26 is forecasted but I do grow them in the ground. I cover them with cardboard and a double frost cloth if it goes below 20. We have had freezes at about 13º and I have had my different hardier aloes come back. I will dig some up as insurance. when it gets BAD. I hear it might get bad this February this year. Winter is supposed to come late here in the heartland. I am the southern heal of the heartland . It might miss us altogether but then it might slap us silly. Central Texans have years to build up their winter denial between the hard hits. I have had one freeze of 29º this year so far. You should have heard the caterwauling. I was among them . My aloe greatheadi and capitata are starting to bloom right now so usually that means that a killer frost is coming to Texas. LOL I have never seen the greatheadi bloom that was not pressed to the ground by freeze clothes. Sigh....I have better luck with the ubiquitous A. maculata.

I agree with bumblebeez and prefer Publix bakery and deli. While they are generally higher priced, their specials are usually pretty good deals. My favorite thing about Bloom is the checkout process. You sign up and get a shoppers card (no charge) then when you come in, scan your card, you get a pricing/scanner wand, not sure what proper name is, and as you select your items you scan them, bag them in your buggy, and when finished go to checkout, pay, and go. You only handle your items once and you can bag like you want. They also use paper bags with handles, much better than plastic. The concept is great!! and I love it.

I knew they would be higher because of several things they claim to have that others do not.

I really like the idea of scanning and bagging your own groceries a lot. I really had hoped for the wide aisles and no displays blocking. As for aisles running in different directions, I don't like that at all. I wonder which one the folks at Consumer Guide went to.

Thanks for all your observances, I think I would probably stick with Publix too. I have a huge, new Publix just five minutes from me now and I love it!

Some of our Food Lions converted to Bloom, but I never shopped much at Food Lion and find I never shop at Bloom either. The FL's were out of my way, so I guess you could say that Bloom isn't a store where I'm willing to go out of my way - not like Wegmans or Trader Joe's. Now, one Food Lion converted to Bottom Dollar, which is the bottom end of the Food Lion chain. It's close to where I get my hair cut, so I sometimes stop in to buy staples. But again, not worth a special trip.
